What is everyone's thoughts on washer/dryer. Front end vs TOP loader? Brands to purchase or avoid are recommended. Any price point if they are quality.

Do not purchase a front load washer, no matter what brand.

There is some maintenance so they do not get a moldy smell, on my LG there is a small door at the bottom that I just drain the water out every month or so. In my research that is the big knock on them.
Front load sucks. We have top of the line Samsung and they blow. I wish we still had my 15 year old Whirlpool top loaders.
Best of luck getting repair service on the top loads, you'll need it. I've been burned twice by the fancy, computerized, front load washer and dryers. They're more expensive and less reliable than the old fashioned top loads. Those damned things are made to entice people to buy them, not to actually last.
I was on the "avoid front load at all costs" band wagon for a long time, as were ratings services like Consumer Reports, etc. However, with a planned remodel last year, it became a necessity due to space issues (we needed to stack washer and dryer).
I did some research, and a lot of the former issues have been overcome. In fact, the majority of higher rated newer models were front load. I wouldn't say I was 100% convinced by the reports, but it was necessary in my case. And happily, I have been REALLY pleased with our LG front loader (and the dryer too).
My most useful advice: AVOID SAMSUNG WASHERS AND DRYERS LIKE THE PLAGUE.

It took Samsung appliances to finally bring us together. They're awful, awful, awful and provide comically bad warranty service in rural OK.
We've had an LG front load set for about 8 years now. No problems for us except we learned quickly to keep the washer door open when not in use so that it will dry out. Run bleach through them on the "clean" cycle every now and then.
We have had the same Whirlpool top load washer and regular dryer for 18 years. I would likely buy the same if/when I have to get a new one. No problems over this time.
Ditto on the Kenmore Elite. We do a **** load of laundry and these things keep on humming along.
