Leaving for Washington, D.C. tomorrow for about 4-5 days. I have only been there once, when I was 10, and it was just for 8 hours or so passing through.

I am a history guy, so I know what all's there and what I'm going to see. Don't really need help there. What I'd like is recommendations for (relatively) cheap/relaxed bars and restaurants to check out while I'm there. The more historic, the better.

Also, I hear the Metro is pretty easy to take. Staying with friends in Arlington. I know nothing about what kind of card options there are. Recommendations there? Thanks for any help.

Old Ebbit Grill oldest saloon in DC , cheaper to do lunch, loved the trout parm.

When I was there, Union Station had a food court and great architectural features inside. Plus the Metro seemed the best way to get around town.

I missed out going to the DC waterfront that suppose be a fish market where they boil blue crabs in Old bay seasoning.

Founding Farmer's is a good restaurant. Been there twice in the last 5 years it was excellent both times. I love DC I am jealous. I am a big time walker so I just walked around everywhere I went both times. It's a nice way to take it all in. Outside of the free government museums the Newseum and International Spy Museum are pretty cool too. Someone else above mentioned walking down to Union Station for a bite to eat one day. I agree grabbing lunch in there is really cool and the architecture in that building is amazing and that is in a city where they spared no taxpayer dollar ever on architecture. Since Spring Breaks will be starting up and it is busy this time of year there, make sure you make reservations for stuff early. Some of that stuff fills up quickly.

Also for a sport's bar close to the National Mall where they will serve you a good selection of ice cold beer in one of those big 20 oz glasses and you can grab some wings or a sandwich and fries check out Penn Quarter Sports Bar. Place saved our life a couple of times with the kids. Ducked in grabbed them something to eat while my wife and I nursed down a couple of beers each.

The Bier Baron was my favorite pub to drink at. That place has that old brick interior. really awesome drinking spot. I also like Heavy Seas brewery there too.

I don't remember the name but there was some nice Irish pubs in the Union station area also.
Sure you can get a bite from a food truck or a dirty water hot dog cart around the mall.

There's a Metro station in Alexandria that can take you into the city and just about anywhere you would want to go. Excellent system and easy to navigate.

Cedar Knoll and Gadsby's Tavern in Alexandria are cool places. Ben's Chili Bowl in D.C. is famous for its casual diner food.

You're probably going there for biznis..but one thing always killed me who TF goes there for vacation?!?!
