Hey no flack here.. just giving my two cents. I think they look great, but I'm always on the hunt for functional.. Not sure how old you both are.. but I get the sense that watch fashion is kind of dying with the younger generations, no?
I’m 42…my kids like them but only bc I do, but to me that’s kinda the “passing it down effect” which I enjoy.

This was my first watch...

I wanted a gshock for some reason, so I got this one after trying another model and sending it back. This thing is dang cool. GA-800.

This was my second watch...

Seiko SRPE, but I put a Crown and Buckle "chevron" strap on it. This thing looks pretty classy, and it's what I wear every day pretty much.

My next watch will probably be a diver of some sort, and I really want a blue/black batman bezel'd one....which aren't as easy to find as say a pepsi one. I'm thinking I'll get a $44 Casio because...why not. Put a cool strap on that sucker and it'd look nice.

I really love this with the white face, too...

I’ve worn four different versions of that Casio dive watch for around 10 years now. I think they’ve actually gotten cheaper (in cost). I have threee black bezels with different straps: metal, rubber, and a NATO strap, and one blue bezel with the metal strap. They’re great and cheap enough that I never felt the need to change the straps, I just bought more watches.

Recently, I started wearing a small, cheap, retro Casio to work because I like how it easily fits under my sleeve and is the antithesis of showy - which is a good thing for my role.

I also have a cheap 10-Year Battery Casio with a big display that I wear on job sites, in mud, etc. Somewhere I have a Casio Pathfinder with a digital compass that was actually helpful for world travel before smartphones but I don’t know where it is.

I love my Apple Watch, but checking one for just the time does not feel appropriate sometimes, like in an important meeting.

The gesture of checking a smart watch for the time carries the weight of potentially checking it for information that you would never pick up your phone to check in the same manner. But you can always just glance at your watch.

(I like watches and appreciate how it’s a cool hobby, but I’m not a “watch guy.”)

Bespoke southern gentleman wear nice watches, drink bourbon, smoke cigars, know how to tie a tie, wear nice shoes, are well groomed, but can put on camo, slug beers, and kick ***. Gotta toe the line between sophistication and redneck.

-i have my dress shirts custom made. The left cuff is 1/4" or so larger to accommodate a wristwatch.

^I am a nerd.
rudd - I'd honestly be disappointed in you with anything less. That is sublime. LOL

You're the "Anti-Dude" when it comes to fashion, dress, food. Basically the cultured things in life. It's nice to know you're out there, picking up the slack for the likes of me. I love it.

Look at yourself, man.

Thing is hideous. You have a phone in your pocket, no reason to handicap yourself with that bs on your wrist.

And you gotta charge the pos???

[laughing] Albany’s arms were *really* hairy.

Watches are extremely cool and timeless to me. Very few things are made to outlive you anymore, generational etc.

I have a couple that were my Dad’s….one he gave me when I turned 18 that def lit the fire, one that was his daily that my Mom handed me the day he died. In turn, I bought one when each of my kids were born that I will give them when they turn 22 (18 was too young lols) and the rest of my collection they can have when I kick the can.

Admittedly I have gotten kinda caught up in the chase of the last couple years with the hard to get stuff, but it’s fun to me and watch people “get it”. There has certainly been an influx of Flippers to the watch world but is what it is.

I get it when people think watches are silly or just wear an Apple Watch…..I have an Apple Watch as well. In fact been wearing that quite a bit the last two months as my daily is being serviced which takes forever these days. I like some parts of the AW but honestly it’s a little too much sometimes….I digress.

At any rate….much like any other niche topic….I’ve learned via 20 years in The Paddock that there’s always something people spend time and money on that someone else thinks is stupid.

….wear it in good health!
Care to highlight your collection? If not, understandable.

All good, have posted it before but added since….just didn’t want to be Rolex Guy when the Clown had asked otherwise. But am def a “watch guy” so here you go in order of acquisition:

TT Datejust
SS Ladies Datejust, diamond dial (wife)
SS Black Sub Date (daily)
SS Black GMT, newer style w supercase
Gold Day Date, diamond dial
SS Pepsi GMT w Jubilee band
SS OP 34, Red Grape Roman dial (wife)
SS Starbucks/Cermit Green Sub

Fortunate to have built a relationship with my AD before the market hit the fan (which actually predates Covid by a couple years) as the Pepsi and Starbucks are essentially impossible to get anymore. Am on him pretty frequently about a white dial Daytona which will happen at some point but lols who knows.

Have some cool old stuff from the older watches, boxes and papers and whatnot. After my Dad passed I found a hand written note in the DJ box (it was from 1967) from his fighter pilot buddy that picked it up overseas for him.

At any rate am fortunate to have that kind of collection but more importantly some cool stuff that will live past me and that my kids will hopefully think of me when they wear them, I certainly think of my Dad when I wear the two that were his.

🍻

That’s an awesome collection and background. My top watch I want to add someday is the white gold blue sub. Might get the two tone blue sub to tide me over.

Oh, I can't stand the look of the Apple watches. I have no idea how that square look appeals to people, especially men. I've had the Galaxy Watch 3 for a little while now. Looks traditional, has a trouch screen and rotating bezel with a nice click feel. Needs a charge once every 3 days I'd say. But most importantly, it's been instrumental in fitness tracking and work productivity. I get Slack messages right to it, emails, alerts, etc.

I'll tell you.. the ability to link my alert apps (messages, Slack, Email, SSO) onto it is probably the best part. That watch above has saved my *** several times, which in turn has saved the company I work for a ton.

My Apple Watch became a lot less useful at work after we went to a required mobile device management app install for all devices (including personal) for a company account to load on it.

I elected to keep it off of my personal iPhone and my watch isn’t hooked up to my work iPhone. Now, during work hours, my “next appointment” is almost always my kid’s next extra cirricular activity on the family calendar (which is a pleasant reminder, but not useful for work).

So speaking as an IT guy.. we (the IT department at least), really don't care what you browse on your phone, and what extra curricular activities you use it for. It's purely for security purposes when we install things like Airwatch and JAMF.. making sure company data isn't compromised, data loss prevention, updates, stuff like that.

I totally get why people don't want this stuff on their personal phones, and I can't vouch for other IT departments.. but I'd wager the vast majority are just doing it because they have to. I could care less what you do with your phone, and I work for a security organization.

Speaking as an “Operations tech” guy, I work with IT guys a lot and view them as mostly fly-by-the-seat of their pants “tech-klutzes” and I don’t want to give them to “red button” and opportunity to accidentally wipe my personal data. I don’t care too much about the big brother aspect.

One of our IT guys showed up on the quarterly public shaming list of employees that clicked on the phishing test email he was instrumental in sending!

Also, dive watches are a nice for parents because it’s easy to track time-outs. I’ve used that feature a couple times today already!

Happy to report all my younger cousins were wearing non smart watches for Easter.

I don’t think watches are dying with the young generation.

In fact, I think smart watches have probably helped create more watch folk.

Almost have my daytona "knockoff", it's a Seiko...

Arrives today. First solar watch for me. Pretty pumped about that.

Another watch that's pretty daggon cool for $200ish, pure Chicom red...

I tried a Casio Duro, and returned it. It's a big huge *****. I couldn't handle the size. Every bit as big as my midsized Gshock, but heavier.

Yea, pretty unique and rad looking dial.

I think this Chinese watch is right up your alley - or anyone's for that matter. I believe I've talked myself into one.

Look at that beautiful blue *****.

I barely know what I'm talking about here, but these Suggess branded watches are based on the historic Chinese military Seagull 1963, featuring a very cool hand-wound movement that has been updated, and looks like this now...

Seagull ST19 movement

I have a couple of Swiss watches, but Luminox (moderate priced Swiss) is still my favorite brand.

If I ever lose my mind (again) and want to spend serious money on a watch, it won’t be Swiss: it’ll be RGM, a hand-made AMERICAN automatic!!
I was just scrolling through this to see your comment. I recall you talking watches after Mel’s funeral. Strange what we remember.

I am a watch junkie. I like field watches too. This is my most recent purchase, Bulova automatic. Got it for just under $300. I have a 1982 Hamilton Army issue mechanical. An LL Bean quartz (cheap and for the beach) and a Filson quarts by Shinola (too big).
