I tried watching with my wife after hearing how good it was. Made it through about six episodes and we both thought it was pretty bad actually. Walton Goggins is great in everything and so is Timothy Olyphant but it seemed super low budget and the writing and other actors were pretty awful.

However I’ve heard that after the first season they get away from the “crime of the week” format and it gets better so I might give it another shot. I think Goggins becomes more central to the overall plot?

For those that watched, did you think the first season was worse than the rest and that it gets better? Can I just skip the first season and move onto the second if the format changes? I really wanted to like the show but it just didn’t start off very well IMO.

You have to continue watching. Yes Boyd becomes a more main guy after the first season. First season is the worst but I wouldn’t skip it. It’s one of my favorite shows along with The Wire, GoT, The Shield, Sopranos, Son of Anarchy and Banshee.

Dexter is a pretty cool show I’d add to this list. Who doesn’t love an old fashion serial killer?

Not making Mindhunter season 3 is a crime.

Nobody mentioned DEADWOOD. Only 3 seasons, but great show.....
Honestly some shows like that are the best. They tell a great story and don’t drag it out. That’s why Breaking bad was so good. It could have been dragged out after season 3 got very popular but Gillian knew the story he wanted to tell already and wrapped it up.

Yeah I need to watch the two seasons after show ended now. Hope it stays good.
I wasn’t a big a fan of the one in the snow, I can’t remember the name. There was one in Jan released and then the one in July. I haven’t watched either of those.

Thanks all for the responses. Rafters really has changed, I assumed I was going to get dogpiled for a bad take lol.

I’ll definitely give it another shot and glad to hear it gets better.

IMO the single best season of any TV show ever is True Detective season 1. Absolutely perfect show. Other seasons, not so much.

So many great shows these days it’s kind of impossible to digest it all.

It’s common for the first season to be the worst and slowest. They’re laying it out and trying to find their groove.

The show is great especially the other seasons and then the limited series in Detroit was cool too.

Justified was ok, but after watching Breaking Bad, SOA, BCS, and Ozark, it just couldn't quite get over the hurdle of "greatness".

“Crime of the week” is a good way to put it. “Crime of the episode” would be another way to put season 1.

I also thought season 1 jumped around too much and didn’t have any continuity from episode to episode.

However, from season 2 and forward, they become more about story development through the entirety of the season. Much better story development and continuity. Season 2 is one of the best seasons in TV history.

But you do need to finish season 1.

I thought the season with Quarles in it was best. Chewing oxy’s while sipping Pappy Van Winkle…. The best part is when he yelled “look a piggy bank” right before he got his arm sawed off…
