We need to! Special teams have killed us all . Awful field position for us, great field position for the other t. That will absolutely kill a team

This **** only happens at Kentucky!

We could bring back Bear Bryant and give him the Cadillac and I honestly think we'd still be cursed....

It's definitely an "innovative" approach going with no one to coach special teams....an approach I don't think we'll see replicated by too many staffs in the near future

Anyone have an idea how common this is in the sec or in general?
It's more common than you might think but still not the norm to go without a special teams coach. When Georgia got rid of theirs a few years ago I think the split was around 80/20 have/not have. We've ditched ours since then, some others might have done the same or some schools without might have switched back, not sure, I just know we're not the only team in the country going without, it happens and good teams (Michigan State I know, UGa I know) go without too, not just us.

You can't just go out and hire a special teams coach. First you have to dismiss a coach on your staff, NCAA only allows for 9 assistants, so you have to decide which position coach you are going to do without. At UGA we have a DB, ILB, OLB and DL coach on defense and a QB, RB, WR, OL, and TE coach. Richt feels he rather have those 9 position coaches and hand out responsibilites for special teams to individual coaches. Our ILB coach coaches the kick off team, mostly because he is a little nuts, TE coach handles offensive punt returns OLB coach handles punting and RB+WR coach handled kickoff return. Its not perfect, but we have covered pretty well most of the year and returned a couple of punts for TDs. Personally I think it has much more to do with putting an emphasis on their importance by spending a determined amount of time every practice on special teams, maybe not everyone everyday, but at least one. Don't act like they are an afterthought and you are just sticking someone out there. I am not saying that is going on at UK, but it may be part of the time management thing so many are complaining about Stoops about. Team can only spend so much time a week practicing.

Grumpy, as usual, pretty much nailed it. Stoops choose to hire Andy Buh instead of a dedicated ST coach. I can't make an informed judgment as to whether Buh is making/has made a real difference for the defense or not.

Don't remember exactly which year it was, but I remember Joker firing Steve Ortmayer, the ST coach under Brooks who Joker had initially retained, in order to bring in Greg Nord for recruiting purposes. Joker had Nord coach ST, and our special teams under Joker from that point were a joke.

There's just no way Stoops can continue the coaching staff status quo for next season - can he???
