In AP, #11 in Coaches Poll. Was curious to see where we would land based on the losses you mentioned. As long as we beat SC State at home like we should, we should be top ten in both polls. Our level of play needs to seriously improve before I will say we deserve to be ranked that high. I know SC State is considered a throwaway game, but I think how seriously the team takes it will be an indicator of how good we can be. Blow them out and put the game away early!

Is this the first time we've been in the top 10 in the AP poll since that infamous loss to Texas A&M to kickoff the 2014 season?

Bama's lowest ranking since the start of the 2008 season (Saban's second season, which eventually saw them climb to #1).

It's wild. There are teenage Bama fans who don't know anything but a world where Bama has been a top 10 team.

Bama's seeming quick demise under Deboer only further highlights how great Saban was.

Possibly. I was never a true believer in him to take over for Saban. He had two great seasons at Washington....with Penix as his QB. Deboer could just be the latest example of the next "can't miss" coach who doesn't pan out...and there's a long list. Maybe he'll get things squared away, but the reality is, Bama just isn't Bama without a GREAT head coach. As much as many fans have said it over the years, Bama is not just plug and play.

For the 24 years prior to Saban, they were mostly just ok, with a few great years under Stallings. They were so good for so long under Saban, that people have forgotten they weren't ALWAYS that good. For 11 years from 1997-2007, they had 8 years where they weren't even ranked.

I don't care what school you are, how much money you have or how much you have won in the past, if you don't have a great head coach, you won't be great. You may be able to pull of a really good year or two with generational-type player, but Bama was great under Saban, ONLY because of Saban.

To Deboer, I don't know how many times this has to happen before folks stop overreacting. A rational person would have said "ok, let's give him a season at Washington without Penix to see how he does."

I don't know that Deboer is really "bad". He's probably a good coach but he isn't a Saban, nobody is. NIL and the portal have spread the talent around more than ever and it is really hard for a team to stockpile talent like Saban did. Combine the huge talent reserves and Saban's focus and attention to every detail and you have a true dynasty.

We'll find out a lot in 3 weeks at Missouri.
I'm not sure Missouri is all that this season. If we aren't 5-0 when we go to LSU, we probably aren't nearly as good as some people think.

The win over VT was nice but I think WAY too much is being made of it. VT is not a good team and we basically won the game on two long td plays. Outside of those two plays and an impressive first drive, our offense really didn't do much.

I dunno about Missouri yet. They vaporized a nobody in Week 1. But, for us, they have been a tough out for the last 6 or 7 seasons, even when they haven't been that good. We beat them by the hair of our chinny chin chin last year. They are far from the best team we'll play this season, but it's our first conference road game against an opponent who has had our number in recent years.

Even Saban might not be Saban in this NIL environment. Probably why he retired. He didn't want to risk going out on a 7-5 season.

NIL didn't bother him nearly as much as the portal. He has said he thinks the portal has ruined college football. At the end of his last season, he said players started coming to him and asking him how much he would pay them to stay at Bama and not transfer. He said that was when he knew it was time to retire.

There's been a nexus of losing Saban and changing landscape of recruiting. When you can keep a treasure trove of 5* recruits just because the signed with you out of high school, it tilts the scales quite a bit. Those days are over... and a big reason why Saban left.

I didn't see a top 10 team in SC this weekend. I would say more like 23rd. OL and DB's need some work. I am not too worried about the DBs because we have a high end coach but I think OL will probably struggle all year. OL looked slow and confused.
