We Are Way Better Than Last Year

Second half defense was pretty good yesterday. Louisville has the makings to be one of the very best offenses in the country.
It was better, but we still gave up 43 points. So not sure that’s saying much. Also, UL was getting pretty gassed in the 2nd, so was it as much our D or them running out of energy.

UL will be good, but I will wager good money many teams hold them to a lot less than 43 for a half or 96 for the game. And honestly, if their FT shooting stayed better, they would be well over 100.

Most teams aren’t going to willingly try to play as fast as possible versus Louisville. That’s why the amount of points is less of a concern than how they got them. Louisville is a lot like we were last year in how they are built, but are better defensively than we were last year and a lot quicker.

If 24-25 is healthy that means 25-26 has to be healthy. If you put JQ on the floor and give this team a full season to improve, by March I think this team blows the doors off last years team. Defensively this years team will be light years better
JQ is getting way overhyped in regards to expectations. He put up pretty mild numbers aside from blocks last year. His team won like 12 games with him last year, and he didn't get hurt until the season was almost over.

Is he on a better team now? Sure! But I really don't think he is going to be a huge difference maker, particularly coming off an ACL injury and surgery. It also will reduce Moreno's pt, and he is doing pretty well right now himself.

I would say that isn't accurate. More and more teams play the same style now of running and gunning quick shots, shortening possessions but getting more of them.

I am not seeing the quickness, particularly after watching them blow past us over and over last night. Defense has potential to be better, but so far, not seeing a big difference.

We have upgraded almost every position. Did you watch this team when they came back down 20 to down 4? (Actually, most of you probably had turned it off by that point)

We shot better from 2 and 3 and had more rebounds on an away, hostile court. We just had too many turnovers.

Also, you people yelling and Jasper Johnson - it's his 3rd game and 1st away game. Are you serious? Did you forget all of last year?
I agree with you. I think we are far better across the board than last season.

I don't believe we lost on talent last night. The out rebounding a donut hole team by 2 is not that impressive. But last year's team would have been out rebounded.

Right now we are a good but not great team that's finding itself. JQ will be a huge addition is he plays. The rotations last night were terrbile. But Pope really doesn't know the team yet either.

My problem with the team last night was simply that Louisville wanted the game more than we did and it showed. If they got beat they were going down with an empty gun. They were the aggressors all night and we just didn't match it.

I'm including the coaching staff in that too. Maybe they put too much importance on it and they won't play that again?

And maybe we, as UK fans, put too much importance on it too? But we just do!!

I think it will reduce BG's PT by then. Moreno is clearly stronger than BG.
And I don't care about his mild numbers, all he has to do is throw down the occasional dunk. He makes this team better with great defense in the post.

Pope likes Garrison, though. So I wouldn't expect that.

First road game of the year and this Louisville team isn't the trash we beat when Kenny Payne and Chris Mack were coach. Pope took us to sweet 16 when we haven't been there since 2019. When we beat some of these good teams I expect some of you fake fake will be gone. He just needs to learn what line ups he can play. Like Kam Williams could have got more time but other games he look timid. It takes time and Louisville isn't my barometer knowing how good we'll be. Until Louisville plays more games and everyone plays more games I'm not going to jump off of a bridge anytime soon.

Expectations were definitely lower last year.
Based on what I've seen so far, Pope has oversold this team to the fan base in the off season.
Namely Jaland Lowe as an elite PG and the availability of JQ.
The biggest positive I see in this roster is that a large chunk of it can return next season.
We could have 10 come back if you count the two redshirting.

How on the earth can someone determine if we are worse this year when it's November 12th.....Literally early November. LOL at the craziness here. Just cluttered brains that never rest. Geez.

We got down double digits in multiple games last year and came back to win them, last night we did not so no I don’t believe we are better this year.

The blue tinted goggles are amazing. We beat FF Duke, EE Tenn (x2), and champion UF last year. This year we lost to a UL team that won't make it past the S16 (same as this team's absolute ceiling) and got handled in an exhibition by Georgetown.

You guys can go on about exhibitions all you want. The truth is, the exhibition against actual D1 players showed more about the team than the "games" against helpless opposition. And again, beating Purdue's white guys is 0 accomplishment -- a 16 seed and 15 seed did just that in March consecutive years.

I understand your point. I want you to be right, but I'm not convinced you are. It is a small sample, but it appears we are going to struggle with quick teams ... I hope I'm wrong.
I mean this as more of a question than an argument but, who did we lose from last year's team that was quicker than Aberdine and Lowe?
I think this team is faster than last year's team so last year's team would have fared poorly against this year's UL team.

We couldn't guard one quick guy at all because he was just quicker than anybody we have and had game to go with the quickness and I do not
have any answers on how to guard Brown Jr.

I think UL has talent enough (mostly Brown, but an elite 5 star wing is enough in the tourney) to make the S16, just see too many better teams (again, w/ high impact freshmen).

S16 is still a good season for UL. Standards need to be much better at UK.

well with the current roster its hard to see much more than that

not trying to sound like a cal apologist or anything, but with his teams year in and out i felt confident about the POSSIBILTY of a championship, so far these two years havent had that

Hahaha yep!

As time passed, we all forget about the frustrations each and every one of those guys provided game to game. I even questioned Amari's value through the first handful of games. How many of the players on last year's teams were deemed not fit to play in the SEC due to athletic deficiencies? We have two players in the starting lineup who played for superior SEC teams that supposedly made our guys from last season look like chumps.

Based on what I have seen thus far I’m not sure of the original premise. We had players last year that would arise and carry us to victories that were not expected. a perfect example is last years game against Louisville in which Butler hit everything he threw up. He had a career game and we only won by eight. I’m not sure any of our current players are capable of such a performance.

They got gassed at the end of both halves, but that’s what happens when you play with that much tempo on offense and that aggressively on defense. We plugged along more consistently and made the comebacks in each half, just dug ourselves too deep a hole to win it.

I think rebounding is way better than last year, we probably be 8-9 not 10 loss team because of rebounding

We will be good rebounding team this season

But concerns in last year are still the same this year... Hopefully, JQ can add another dimensions to our game.
Quaintance should really improve our rim protection, witch has been pretty poor so far. No JQ and Lowe played less than 1/2 a game of real action. We get Kam Williams playing like he did last night... Its going to be a fun season

I look at it as worse because you pay 20 million for a team you better damn sure beat your in state rival. I don’t want to hear Louisville spent just as much . All summer all we heard is that UK spent the most. Well in all honesty we are going to be the Yankees and Cowboys of college basketball spend all the money and come away with no gold!

To be fair, at the end of both halves we also ended up jacking up more 3s that happened to connect. It's not like we were just blowing by and dominating them. The game never felt in question after they got their first decent lead.

Yeah, I would think they would get a heck of a lot better after their 3rd game of the season and once they get their dude back lol. Which is why all the sky is falling stuff cracks me up

I do believe quick guards are a problem for us as they are for most teams. That said we have strengths too and Pope needs to figure out a way to limit the defensive issues on the perimeter. If we can figure out how to guard the perimeter over the year we will be very tough.

Quicker teams are double-edged. They are hard to guard, but they can also guard on the other end. It is early to know, for sure, but we may need to be more deliberate and dictate pace, rather than try to match the speed of quicker teams. CMP and staff will need to figure out rotations, style and tempo.
I think they know that. Every team has a best personality ... we need to find ours. It does not appear to be clear, yet ...

Price does not always equal value.

Especially on a non tangible like athletics.

I see plenty of $1 mil yearlings that can’t out run $30K claimers.

Are they still better because they cost more?
