I'm trying to piece things together, but here's what I can find:

- he went to Shaler Area HS (PA)
- he took 2nd @ 106 in PIAA AAA as a soph (2017)
- he took 1st @ 113 in PIAA AAA as a junior (2018)
- he broke his hand in the Sectional finals as a senior (2019), so he was in a cast for the rest of the postseason
- he went to Pitt, but redshirted the 2019-20 season
- he transferred to WVU, and qualified for NCAAs in 2021 @ 133 (he won R1, got pinned by DeSanto in R2, then lost 4-3 in his 1st consolation match)
- it appears he did not wrestle for WVU in the 2022 season (I have no knowledge as to why not)
- and per the above tweet and some things I've heard, it appears he's transferred to PSU
- what weight is he? is he in wrestling shape? does he plan to wrestle for PSU? -- I have no answers for those questions.

@GregPickel, can you do some digging on this?

Yes, did some digging last night but got no where further than the details you have here. We’ll see what today brings.

Greg,
Can you get us some details on Ryan Sullivan ? Weight ? When can he compete? What made him to decide to wrestle again ? How many years of eligibility ? Etc. Be great if you could interview him this week coming up. Thank you.

We definitely need a 125 havent had a competitive one for at least 3 years and it looks like Bentacourt is not seeing the lineup till next year

In 2020 he wrestled 125 for Pitt, don't see any match results. In 2021 he wrestled 133 for WV, qualified for Nationals where he lost to #23 Chance Rich of CSB 4-3, and was pinned by Austin DeSanto, I'm assuming in the reverse order.

Frankly, I would stay with Steen. It may be an “old school” view but the kid has been a constant and present all season. If there is no one better on the roster so be it. It’s not an arms race.

Simply need an upgrade. Hopefully we can get some needed points at the Big ten tournament and Nationals. Can’t guarantee anyone is going to repeat.

I gave part of the answer to your assumption in my initial post in this thread. To provide more specificity:

R1: #20 seed Ryan Sullivan (WVU) defeated #13 seed Zach Redding (Iowa State), 4-3, TB-1 (a pretty wild match. 1-1 after regulation; no score in SV; Redding scored a reversal in the 1st 30-sec rideout, but Sullivan quickly escaped; Sullivan with a reversal in the 2nd 30-sec rideout for the win)

R2: #4 seed Austin DeSanto pinned #20 seed Ryan Sullivan (WVU) @ 1:36. (DeSanto had gotten a quick TD, then cut Sullivan, then took him down to his back and got the pin)

Consolation R2: #19 Chance Rich (Cal State U. - Bakersfield) defeated #20 seed Ryan Sullivan (WVU), 4-3

Does anyone think a guy who hasn’t wrestler in a couple of years is the answer at 125lbs? Or even an upgrade? I’m all for brining in a guy and I will be more than happy to support any decisions Cael makes but I’m not holding my breath that this is the solution at 125lbs.

The kid wants to come and compete. Give him a chance to unseat Steen in the room. Steen isn't going to be qualifier unless he wins some Big 10 matches or place at the Big tournament.

Would like to see Will Betancourt become eligible.
Skeptical that Betancourt would be a significant upgrade over Steen. Perhaps a bit better, but not that much.

Agree. Always good to get more competition in the room, but I wouldn't expect Sullivan to be the answer at 125.

Betancourt would be a huge upgrade at 125. Strongly recommend looking into his past. Young man would be awesome for us at 125.

Slightly off topic and I'm sure discussed ad nauseam 5-6 years ago, but was the main reason Lee didn't come to PSU the fact that Suriano was already there, or was it more of the Young Guns/ Iowa influence? Just curious? My failing memory might be conjuring things that aren't accurate. Thanks.

to your 1st question, it was discussed quite a bit (with a lot of speculation). Lee's decision had nothing to do with Suriano being at PSU. Suriano wanted Lee to come to PSU, and had already indicated that he would gladly go up to 133, as it took a lot of effort for him to get to and maintain 125.

Well, I know Betancourt was at Lock Haven in for 2020/21 (redshirt year, I believe), transferred to Ohio State for 2021/22, then transferred to PSU for 2022/23. So that's three schools in three years. Also know he was at 133 in those years and apparently couldn't beat out Brady Koontz at 133 for Ohio State in the 2021/22 season, when the 133 spot was a mess for Tan Tom.

Also know he was a PA state champ at 120 pounds and had some success wrestling freestyle in 2022 at 61 kg (134.2 lb).

Beyond that, don't know much about Betancourt. But that's enough to make me doubt that he could slide right in and be a good answer for PSU at 125.

By the way, just heard that the Koontz twins are transferring out of Ohio State and heading to Division 3 University of Dubuque (Iowa). There they will concentrate on Greco-Roman for an Olympic shot.
