We should hire Flood back

The guy f'd up here in several ways, but people painted the guy as Flood the dud, and Fudd, etc. Well, the guy could not sell ice to eskimos like Greg can, but he was swimming upstream during his time here with very little financial support and the circus sideshow for an athletics director and the Mike Rice fiasco. He did stupid stuff in the end that sank his own ship, but there were a lot of reasons for recruits to avoid Rutgers during his tenure as head coach. If he was a disaster and a dud, Sark would not have brought him over to Texas, and he would not be out recruiting in Texas.
Not saying Flood is bad at his job at Texas but don't totally agree with your last sentence. Coaches bring along past connections and workmates and it doesn't necessarily mean they are great at their jobs. Look at Ash and Buh. Chip Kelly has taken a lot of heat for sticking with his DC Azzinaro. Those aren't the only ones, you see it all the time. Sometimes it takes a lot to finally fire that friend or past connection. I don't know that it's any different in "real life" either.

I don’t care if he comes back and his off field issues did kill us but RU Footballs record while he was here vs all other years since we went Big time in the 80’s is night and day. Do the math. Of course he had Schiano building it and he started the demise but he can flat out coach. Wins matter right?
Yes, wins matter . But he didn’t win enough with what schiano left him and drove the program into the toilet.

The reality for those that are just going to hate on Flood.

First and foremost- his issues here at Rutgers that he gets so much heat for are laughed at by other P5 programs.
He won better than any other HC we have had.
After being fired- had an NFL gig, moved on to OL at Bama and then OC at Texas.
Steady climb up the ladder again at the elites...And even though those schools and the national people give Flood a lot of the credit for performance and recruiting, we just don't want to believe it.

So- with that said, he is not going to leave his position at Texas to become OL coach at Rutgers. His next move, if he wants to make it, will be a HC somewhere or maybe even back to the NFL. I always thought he would come back as a HC at some point at a lower level but with his progression and how well he is doing, it may surprise us where he ends up.

Many schools will see that he is the only coach at Rutgers with an +500 record and that included a 8-4 first season in the B1G. And then see his progression after he left.
And sorry if that butthurts anyone but it is reality.

Agree with a lot of what you say, but he won better than any HC we had because he inherited more talent than any other HC we had.

Excellent OL coach, not a head coach or coordinator
I wouldn't even say coordinator. I'd have to see it to believe it first. He's not even the playcaller at Texas, Sarkisian is. When he's the playcaller exclusively calling the plays then I'll believe it. It's not just him, for anyone. I think that's part of why Dillingham left FSU to go to Oregon. Out from under Norvell and be the OC for a defensive coach. You create a productive offense there then you get the accolades and can move up. Rhett Lashlee moving out from under Malzahn is another. Even went to UConn for a bit in a step down just for that reason.

Leach tree guys are a good example of this. They often go out on their own as OC or lower level HC and then move up from there.

Floodies unite!
I'm not cheerleading for the guy, but as noted, he got a real crap sandwich handed to him, but he made it worse with the stuff he did at the end.

Flood was a very good coach and a not good program builder and program CEO (which is what the HC job is mostly about). I wish we could hire him back but I assume his violation of the rules here has the practical effect of a permanent ban from Rutgers.

Not from a talent perspective
Agreed. And he did well with it in his first seven games! And the loss to Kent State infuriated a lot of people, but they were an 11-3 MAC team, not small potatoes.

Don't recall what the issue was in year 2 that wound up 6-7, and he bounced back in year 3 when he had Friedgen here.

He was constantly criticized as being a dud in recruiting (and there was a lot of talk about him not working long hours), but it was hard to recruit to Rutgers with all of the nonsense going on in athletics (Julie, Rice), but then he added to the nonsense.

Agreeing to all of this...though, I often wonder if he was given a decent budget from day 1 or maybe if Greg had not been black balled from NFL coaches, if Flood may have done better with better support and the chance to maybe learn a little more on the job. Support from the Admin could have helped too.

My biggest disappointment with Flood is that he just gave in to the pressure and did anything he could to keep his paycheck those last couple of years after Julie.

That’s what I already said. This is about Flood as an OL coach where he excels and not about Flood the HC where he was in over his head. On the field was fine given our schedule. Off the field was a disaster which is why I like Schiano so much. He runs a top notch program. One of the best at all of those things that have plagued us since he left.

Again not at all saying we bring him back but:

7-5, 11-2, 8-5, 8-5, 9-4, 4-8, 9-4, 9-4, 6-7, 8-5, 4-8 = 83-57 while he was at RU 2005-2015.

Let me ask you this...One coach has a star player tell a professor "RR don't do tests" and somehow passes that class and it is unnoticed and another coach has a player failing a class and tries to get the professor to assign additional work so he can get his grades up and is vilified for it?
My point isn't to say that Flood was a good HC or that he didn't let the locker room go to **** but to just make a point that almost every HC in America plays this game. Greg was no different. He just carried more clout.

I don’t blame Flood for that one incident. However, it was known amongst the Men in blue to keep an eye out on the players at all times under Schiano. I have heard that from Campus and NB police. I don’t want to dredge up what happened when he left but I think you know what I mean. That was a huge problem for us. The trying to help a student issue was just an excuse to get rid of Flood. He was vilified for trying to help a kid.

IMO the ringleader of the really bad incident and the kid you are talking about probably both play in the NFL or have a shot to if Schiano had stayed. Those things are what make or break a program as fragile as ours.

Good post . Show me a head coach without clout , and i will show you an unsuccessful head coach.

It will never happen because RU can't afford Flood: base salary of $1.1 million in 2021 , $1.175 million in 2022 and $1.25 million in 2023.

Hope the guy is getting Texas state income tax (none), otherwise NJ state income tax will be brutal for him.
