Because teams will run the ball all day on our defense. Losing Meant is huge. I am really bummed but at least this brings me back down to Earth and no more predicting 7 or 8 wins. Give me six and I'm a happy camper. Next year we will have adequate depth but not this year. Games are won up front and we are going to consistently get blown off the ball now.

Because teams will be too busy running the ball down our throats like every other year with our weak defensive line even when we have a good D Line teams run all over us. But I agree no point in passing on us when you can run for first downs all game every game.

Unless you are pig headed like Spurrier was 2 years ago. He just had to try and prove his team could pass against us.

I also fear that our defense is going to get shredded by the run. Our high power offense won't see the field because we can't get off the field on 3rd down.

I think you bring up a good point and when the offense does get on the field they had better take advantage of the opportunity. Stoops will slow the offense down to keep the defense off the field.

What ultimately happens is that you have a no huddle, presumptively explosive offense running 45 plays a game.

Stoops is a defensive minded guy obviously, and would rather lose 33 to 0 than 66 to 33.

A loss is a loss, but as a fan I think you want to see some scoring.

I agree. I have been very disappointed with DJ Elloit and the recruiting on the D-line and the LBs over the last few years.

Problem is, it was disappointing long before Stoops got here. He wasn't exactly left with much to work with, I think we can all agree.
If people thought he was going to pull a Hugh Freeze and get players like Robert Nkemdiche in his first season here, well.. I mean, you see what's going on at Ole Miss now.

We may very well be one of the leaders in pass defense, but it has more to do with other factors. I'm not trying to minimize the loss of Meant. It is a big deal. Number 1 is the fact that this is not a pass happy conference. It's still smash mouth football. We don't play a lot of prolific pro-style QBs, we're not likely to have a lot of teams playing catch up against us, and even with Meant, our front 7 was not as strong as our back 4, so it makes sense to run as opposed to pass anyway. Hopefully our offense can move the chains consistently and save our defense during games.

OTOH, if UK can't generate any decent pass rush, that will tempt a lot of opposing offenses to pass more. Having lots of time in the pocket can make mediocre QBs look great.

You're soooooooooooo right OP. The whole season hinged on Reggie Meant. Might as well cancel the season now!!!!111!!1!
I think what u are underestimating is that we were a weak dline and our run d was going to be suspect even with meant...without him it gets that much harder to a. Rush the qb and b. Defend the run. Nobody said the "whole season" hinged on meant but if you dont see the problem here, i dont know whT to tell ya?

If our DBs and Safeties are the best then we need to put 8 in the box to stop the run and dare them to pass against us. Have a our DBs play bump and run instead of given their WRs a 10 yards cushion at the line of scrimmage to pick up 5 yards for a first down.

Losing Meant isn't going to change other teams' approach against UK. The D-Line was weak before and teams were going to run all over us before Meant's departure. It affects the depth and some experience on the line but D-Line wasn't world class to begin with. End of the day, it might cost you one game here or there. It's why I've been saying 4-8 all summer.

I really wish UK could get a coach who could recruit defensive linemen and then actually coach defensive linemen. Alas, it is not to be again this season. SEC teams will run wild against this defense and when they are done running, well they will run some more. The SEC teams this season are not going to pass much anyway and against UK it appears to me there will be no need.

I am not one who was predicting 7 or 8 wins, even with all healthy players. However, now I am wondering if it is possible to win even 5? Hope I am wrong but I suspect that even the bad teams will be able to run at will against UK which means that the unproven offense will have to shoulder the load. Let us hope they are up to the task.

lol its amazing how Meant has been getting down played on this board for months, heck I even made a thread a few months back saying that I think Meant was in for a good year and several in the thread disagreed. Now since its known that hes most likely out for the season people are acting like the sky is falling.

The fact is we have one of the best DB cores around. Stoops has been hitting it out of the park recruiting studs at DB and now they will show why they are rated this high.

I think we will be tops for the reason they are great not for the Debbie Downer reasons others have posted.

Stoops is a D Man. He knows what to look for and what works. He will run schemes to cover for Meants loss and he will have our pass coverage ready to make plays.

For all you doom and groomers, we will still play on Saturdays and we will still win games.

Go CATS!!!!!

Hinshaw on how having Chris Westry and Derrick Baity helps prepare QBs, WRs:“It’s unbelievable. To have the secondary that we have, to go against every single day and how good they are – and I know they have their moments where they need to get better, but they’re really, really good, and they force our receivers to get better. And that’s huge. That’s huge. What we’re going against, we’re gonna see in the SEC all year because it’s a really good secondary, so it really helps us a lot.”

Sorry - I believe I came in the wrong door here. I was looking for something about how our DB group should be one of our bright spots. Instead I fear I have stumbled into a Fellowship of the Miserable meeting.

I will buy into DB prowess if and only if we dont line them up 10 yards off the line on 3rd and 6 and just let them pitch and catch all night to move chains

You kidding me? The team finished the season 28th in pass defense last season while starting 3 true freshmen in our secondary in the final month of the season (2 for half of the season, and started our All-Freshman CFB corner all season long). In the final month of the season, UK was 3rd in the nation in pass defense, allowing 129.5 yards per game, and 45.8 completion percentage (this is after Mike Edwards started getting most of the playing time).

I think our secondary will be perfectly fine. This is very much a typical UMM thread.

Sometimes, and sometimes you press. You realize that Kentucky isn't the only team that does this, right? It isn't some new concept to play off of the receivers. Some of them you'll back off of, and some you will not. It depends on the receiver, where they're the biggest threat on the field in terms of catching the ball, how good your safeties are, etc.

If the opposing receivers are as open as you suggest, then the team wouldn't post the numbers I posted above against any college football team, period. Absolutely not as simple as "pitch and catch". You're grossly over-exaggerating issues and underselling the abilities of our defensive backfield. In truth, the fact that UK ended up with the 28th pass defense in the nation last season is miraculous considering the lack of a pass rush.

You shouldn't just give up on football, you should give up on all sports. You're such a consistently awful poster (basketball and football alike), it's spectacular that you follow sports at all. I know that this isn't the first time you've been told that, either.

You should give up. I'm urging you to, actually, for everybody's sake.
Georgia did it this year, Alabama did it this year, LSU did it this year, Florida did it this year, so on and so forth. It's common. Let it go.

Besides that, why in the hell would Stoops be teaching bump and run pass defense techniques if he didn't intend on using his DB's in that way? Chill on it. This is a senseless gripe on your part.

Badass defensive backs want to be on an island out there...if they are in press coverage it makes them even better againstvthe run...they are up on line of scrimmage so if it is a run play they are not 10 yards off the ball like we usually are...i played the game dont try to tell me i dont know what i am talking about

Pass defense stats can be misleading, UGA had the number 1 pass defense in the country last season according to yards per game. We didn't lose a DB who played a snap. But that stat is misleading, we had Vandy and Missouri on our schedule, 2 bad offense who had qb issues. AU also had qb issues. We also played GT and Georgia Southern both triple option teams who seldom throw the ball. That made our pass defense look great because of the amount of yards per game we gave up. Our secondary wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best in the country as those stats lead you to believe. Look at those last 3 game of UK last season, that same awful Vandy offense, one of the worst teams in FBC and a team with qb issues. UK has a good secondary, but basing it off those 3 games is misleading, just like ours was.

Amen to this...we're going to have to take chances with the backers near the line of scrimmage to help the DL stop the run. These guys are good and we need to let them strut their stuff.

Them ain't jokers players out there now, and very few last season.

And there ain't many great 5 yr seniors or regular seniors on this team yet. Leadership has lacked for years because of a lack of athletes acquired by this staff.
