We will lead the nation in pass defense

Pass defense stats can be misleading, UGA had the number 1 pass defense in the country last season according to yards per game. We didn't lose a DB who played a snap. But that stat is misleading, we had Vandy and Missouri on our schedule, 2 bad offense who had qb issues. AU also had qb issues. We also played GT and Georgia Southern both triple option teams who seldom throw the ball. That made our pass defense look great because of the amount of yards per game we gave up. Our secondary wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best in the country as those stats lead you to believe. Look at those last 3 game of UK last season, that same awful Vandy offense, one of the worst teams in FBC and a team with qb issues. UK has a good secondary, but basing it off those 3 games is misleading, just like ours was.

And that's alright, because year in and year out, UK and UGA will both have to play those programs. At the end of the day, you play who's on your schedule and make the best of it. Georgia did that, and Kentucky did exceed all expectations. I don't care one way or the other if UK has the best secondary, but I do want them to be the most efficient secondary in the country based on their schedule.

Badass defensive backs want to be on an island out there...if they are in press coverage it makes them even better againstvthe run...they are up on line of scrimmage so if it is a run play they are not 10 yards off the ball like we usually are...i played the game dont try to tell me i dont know what i am talking about

Tell ya what, you show me one defense in college football or the NFL that plays press coverage exclusively, and I'll show you a team that has a bad pass defense. Go ahead, pick Alabama, pick LSU, Florida, whatever elite defense you want. Maybe Arkansas, Mizzou, Clemson. How about ya go to the pro level, check out Seattle, Denver, Carolina. I guarantee you that not a single one of those teams plays press exclusively like you're suggesting that UK should do.

You can have the baddest secondary on the planet, and the reality is, every once in a while, a wide receiver will get behind you if you press them. That 2 steps behind the receiver means that you could very well give up a 30, 40, 50 yard gain, or even a touchdown. What about when the CB inevitably gets turned around while defending the WR (because you can't backpedal as fast as those guys sprint, just not gonna happen)? The WR always has the advantage to make the quick cut and get the step on the CB, so majority of the time, as soon as that wideout makes his hitch, he's open against the press. At least when you're playing 7-10 yards back, it allows your DB's to make reads and try to jump the pass to make a play, and at the very least, keep the ball in front of them. That's why defenses do that. All of them. Not just UK.

You cannot have a defense where you play the press exclusively. I don't care if you have Richard Sherman, Josh Norman, and Chris Harris Jr. defending the wide receivers, if you play press against a decent wide receiver that can make sharp cuts and attack the football when it's thrown to them, you're going to give up yardage all the same. The only differences are that in the press, it's absolutely more difficult to get the ball to receivers, but you're that much more susceptible to giving up explosive plays because wide receivers will occasionally beat you and get behind you, just the nature of the game. Conversely, if you play 7-10 yards off the receiver, it's very difficult to make explosive plays, you make the field for the offense to work with smaller, but you're going to give up the occasional dink and dunk passes. There has to be a good balance. There's more to back end play than "line em up and let's go", especially in a defense where your CB's and safeties are used in blitz packages.

Because teams will run the ball all day on our defense. Losing Meant is huge. I am really bummed but at least this brings me back down to Earth and no more predicting 7 or 8 wins. Give me six and I'm a happy camper. Next year we will have adequate depth but not this year. Games are won up front and we are going to consistently get blown off the ball now.
I keep telling you that it takes years to develop a defense to play at SEC schools. Their is no quick fix on defense. Quality players, red shirts, quality depth take 7-10 years to develop.

And there ain't many great 5 yr seniors or regular seniors on this team yet. Leadership has lacked for years because of a lack of athletes acquired by this staff.
Agree, I can't remember a senior / junior dominated team.
We are forever young.

We may never get there. Our depth (Long, Tucker, TV Williams, LaRubbio, etc) keeps transferring. We have to figure out a way to keep these guys around even though they don't start. It's how you build quality depth. You lose guys like West and Meant for the year and it kills your depth.

Nope. Guys 3 & 4 spots down the depth chart will continue to transfer.

I am going to give our veteran OL and very gifted corps of RB some credit, and say that whatever struggles our DL is having in 1's v. 1's at this time might have as much or more to do with what the offense brings, as what the defense lacks.

I also fear that our defense is going to get shredded by the run. Our high power offense won't see the field because we can't get off the field on 3rd down.

Just happened to land on your post when I opened the thread so nothing personal.

But I've been seeing other remarks referring to "our high power offense" in other threads and I wonder what offense is that? A qb who has only shown he's very ordinary, an offensive line that we know could have some major faults at tackle, receivers who are only internet rumors and a new OC.

No offense but only at preseason UK would that be considered high powered.

We hope that is true but as one coach has said "depending only on hope is a bad plan".

Doom and Gloom. It is what it is. Meant probably wont be here for this season. Huge loss but next man up!! You guys are getting down on a defense that hasn't even stepped foot on the field against an opposing team. With Meant being out, we may see another player break out and have an outstanding year, or possibly fail. All I'm saying is be a little positive and see where this thing goes. I'd rather have a little faith then no faith at all.

Well I don't know how old you are but Brooks had a couple, Mumme had a couple, and Curci had a couple. All breed the best success stories that this program had seen except for the Bear so it's really the guideline for a consistant winning program.

I guess we have a difference of opinion on senior and 5th year dominated team.

UK has had high powered offenses in the past. Most fans remember.

Eh, let's see. Our front 4 has a lot of questions but LB I think will be deep and solid this year. If they can plug the gaps out backfield is good enough to allow us to stack the box

Not sure I follow you, look at the qb play in the SEC east last year. When it came to passing UK probably had the best passer in the division, the rest including us went from not very good to awful. We didn't have the best secondary in college football last year, yet we had the number 1 pass defense, we started a walk on. But playing against 4-5 inept passing teams, 2 triple option teams resulted in that stat. We open against a good passing offense this year, return every single player who saw the field in 15, I will be more than shocked if we hold them under 300 yards passing. Yet we return the number 1 pass defense from 15 intact. I don't understand how you don't see playing one of the worst teams in FBS, a team with a poor qb and a team with a qb who is a runner not a passer wouldn't effect the amount of yards given up passing. That doesn't mean your secondary didn't play well or isn't good. We only passed for about 175 a game last year, its why we scored 11 offensive TDs in our last 8 games and putting an offense on the field that bad is why we have a new coaching staff.

Problem is, it was disappointing long before Stoops got here. He wasn't exactly left with much to work with, I think we can all agree.
If people thought he was going to pull a Hugh Freeze and get players like Robert Nkemdiche in his first season here, well.. I mean, you see what's going on at Ole Miss now.
This year is mainly his guys. Now he has a couple of more years to get it together.
