Let's simmer down. Southern Miss is no fluke.

Their QB, RB and Center are all on watch lists for a reason..

Do I think we win? Yes but it's not going to be smashing them.

I agree with what Freddie Maggard said, "They're better than South Carolina."

They played Mississippi State better last year than we did and they have a great QB back. They did lose their two best WRs and tackler and have all new coaches. Those are our advantages. We'd better control the ball.

I remember the optimism we had last year at this time, with a lot of offensive talent coming back. Dawson managed to do less with more then, and I would not be surprised to see history repeat itself. This time around he's facing an SEC team, rather than fielding one. This time around, he's on the road, at night, in a hostile environment. This time around, UK has even more offensive talent and a competent OC and QB coach. Though I don't expect a blowout (Southern Miss really does have some talented playmakers), I do expect UK to look much improved on offense, and to win the game by at least two scores. JMO.

I know Southern Miss is this and that, return a stud QB, etc. Games like this, early on tend to remind me of the 2012 match up with Kent. St. that we won 47-14. Kent. St., like Southern Miss, had a solid returning cast who performed well the year before and NEARLY made a big boy bowl but fell to Northern Illinois. We finished 2-10 that year. Not worried about this game. I expect a different team this year, maybe not dramatically better, but I definitely believe we will be more disciplined and execute more often.

I doubt UK is going to beat a Southern Miss team that in all honesty has the stronger unit. I think UK will keep it close but get beat by around 10-14 points.

Don't think we lose the game, but I also don't think we "smash" them like the OP said. We beat EKU last year, but no one would dare say we smashed them after an OT squeaker. Southern Miss will be a hard-fought win.

Don't need ya either. It's realistic to think the better team will win. Southern Miss isn't UK so that helps.

Don't worry basketball season will be back and uk can get back to winning.

Well I guess we ought to tell them Eagles that they can stay in Hattiesburg and enjoy their holiday weekend. Let's just forfeit the game right now since we apparently have no shot at winning according to Dakota25.

Go back to Rupps Rafters and talk about what Cal had for breakfast or something.

Shannon Dawson is one of the worst OC's the D1 game has to offer. If we don't blow them out considering who the new OC is then that'll be pathetic to say the least. Dawson is trash and for that simple fact and the fact our coaches know his 'offense' inside and out we have no business playing a close game with USM. People here will try and convince you otherwise by saying USM is a top 15 team with an All World QB but they don't realize how trashy the Dawson hire stoops made was and how bad of an OC he really is. We hired a guy who had never called plays at the D1 level before and his first play calling gig was an SEC job? Someone somewhere along the lines lost there damn mind making that hire. Made no sense at all.

Southern Miss has a history of playing SEC and other Power 5 teams close. They are not the Southern teams of 10 - 15 years ago but you always have to be on guard against them. They are not EKU or LA Lafayette.

Gran and Hinshaw will make sure we win by a comfortable margin. The reason is that they are competent offensive coaches!

Nobody knows how good SM will be this year. They have lost most of their proven offensive talent save one RB and their QB. They lost 3 of their top 5 receivers, both of their OT's, and one of their dual 1000 yard RB's. They have a new head coach and a new offense to learn under Shannon Dawson. I would think any Kentucky fan that watched Dawson's team last year would be well acquainted with just how effective Dawson proved to be.

On defense they lose their top 2 DL a NT and a DT up front, their best LB and one other starter at LB also their best DB.

I don't see SM fielding the same stout team as last year.

It will be an interesting game, a small conference, regional school coming off a great season vs. a power conference state school at (hopefully) the end of a rebuild period. You don't get these very often. Some interesting points:

  • So. Miss has some playmakers returning on offense, so we'll get to see pretty quickly if our front seven is as bad as the media seems to believe it is. Will they read-option us to death? That seems to be the plan of every other spread team.
  • If you're a So. Miss fan, you have to wonder what's next. Small conference schools coming off very good seasons often fall apart when their talent and coaching deserts them all at once. Was last year the start of something big at Hattiesburg, or the peak before the decline?
  • So. Miss lost a ton of talent on defense. Barker has all his weapons back, a better offensive line, and a whole summer as "the man" at QB. If he's not effective, it's on him.
  • Shannon Dawson's tenure at UK was marked by less than creative play-calling, strange personnel choices, and a seeming disconnect between him and Stoops. I think his biggest problem, though, was his stubborn refusal to modify his system for the talent he had. He wanted to be fast-paced and vertical, producing lots of short, "boom or bust" drives, exactly what a team with a lack of depth of defense doesn't need. (You could also argue that his talent was more suited to dink and dunk passing). Will his show the same stubborn streak at So. Miss?

I think we win the game because Gran is pragmatic and resourceful. He will pinpoint what So. Miss's defense can't stop and go to that well again and again until they have to abandon their principles to plug that gap. Then, their defense falls apart. UK's defense will do enough to win, maybe produce a turnover or two. UK 35 -- So. Miss 17

The unknown about Dawson is: how much of the issues attributable to him at UK resulted from a poor mix of personalities and coaching styles? In other words - he obviously was the wrong man in the wrong situation. But, with him being in an environment where he feels more comfortable, does he also then become more effective.

PLus did he learn much from his first season as an OC or is he still in a state of denial.

I feel pretty confident that our offense is going to be so improved as to make the entire team look different.

Therefore, I want to believe we run away (a bit) with this game. A 17 point victory achieved with some points producing, clock eating balanced offense and a largely fresh defense playing on a long field does not seem like too much to ask. 31-13 Cats is the kind of result I (modestly) hope for in this one, though I'd take a 1 point victory. Seriously folks, we are playing this one at home... If we lose to USM, we have a long SEC season ahead of us, I'll say that.

We will learn a lot about our squad in Game One. Of all the scenarios playing in my head, the one thing I keep seeing is Dawson trying to get cute with our secondary, and paying for it with turnovers. IF he is determined to test our secondary, thinking they can strike quickly and demoralize our kids, I am not sure he is working with the sort of QB who can be relied upon to avoid turning the ball over against the length and speed we are now putting on the field in our secondary.

Folks say he wanted to put more air under the ball than Coach Stoops was interested in seeing. If he is given free reign to go that route against us, I think it could get ugly for him quickly, turning into a Debut Party for our secondary.

Were CMS and MB (barney) responsible for that hire? In hindsight it was not a good hire.

He was not the first choice or even the second but they had to fill the spot with somebody. Common problem for Kentucky that a lot of people don't realize or admit---Kentucky is simply not a destination job in football. We now have a really good looking staff and I hope it stays together long enough to make some lasting changes to our program.

True. We would have never landed Neal Brown had he not been a UK alumn. Keeping good coaches is a bigger problem. As soon as they prove they can coach here, they immediately become a hot commodity. MB will have to open up the pocket book like he did with Morrow if we are to keep these guys here.
