The first week is always the toughest one to predict but here are my thoughts:
Lee has had a year to get to know their coach, so this game will not be as scatterbrained, for lack of a better word, as last year's. They had no idea what they were doing, made a TON of mental mistakes, and Riverheads took full advantage. I still don't see them as being ready to beat the Big Red but I do expect a closer game than last year, maybe like a 2-3 touchdown margin.
For me, Wilson and Waynesboro is a tough one to call because the media has given us the impression that each one has both a numbers problem and an identity crisis. So that one could be a crazy, awkward game decided by a fluke or turnover. I will go with Waynesboro by a TD, but I have nothing really to base that on.
Last year, we sat at our game and listened to the Bison pounding Fort Defiance. If I remember, they scored something like 55 in the first half. Of course at the time, nobody knew the season the Indians were about to endure. This time it should not be such a big massacre, but I still expect a solid 25-30 point win for the home team.
And finally that leaves ER and Spotswood. That should be the game of the week here in the Valley. So far the Blazers have had their way with their neighborhood rivals, mainly based on the enrollment/classification difference. But if you believe everything you read, McNeir is the real deal this year and ready to put his name in the record books. Just on a hunch, I will go with the Eagles to pull the upset and get them started on what could be their best season ever.
