Apologize profusely for maybe asking a question that may have been asked numerous times before for years...but...what is the purpose of, or can the consideration in rankings be made for, teams that will be moved up in class when playoffs start? What is the logical purpose of ranking a team in 7A all year when they will play in 8A come playoffs? Respectfully asked to those who know more than I?

Because of the current IHSA system technically you don't know a specific class until pairings night....unless you are a Phillips and volunteer "up" to a specific class.

Thank you ET, bowing down, I know (knew) the technical answer...asking the practical question I guess, or maybe, it's not a question worth asking (or answering), but why rank teams all season long in a class they never will play in come playoffs? Why chop down a tree in the woods when no one will hear because everyone is here (and not in the woods) listening? Ah...life's profound questions. Never mind, carry on, my frustration will live on.

I think it is a bit extreme to say teams are ranked in a class all season long that "they never will play in come playoffs". The Associated Press uses the most objective information available at a given point in time to determine which class a team should be ranked in. During the regular season, when one does not know which teams will qualify for the playoffs, the most objective method is to take all the teams in the state and divide them into eight sets that have the same number of teams in them. These eight sets are based on enrollment as adjusted by multipliers and success factors.

Once the regular season is over and the 256 playoff-qualified teams are known, the Associated Press then objectively knows for the first time which of the eight classes those teams will be playing in during the playoffs. It is true that at this time some teams that had been ranked in one class during the regular season will be shifted (for the playoffs and for ranking purposes) to a different class. It is not true to say they never had a chance of playing (in the playoffs) in the same class they had been ranked in during the regular season. Most of these teams are borderline (in terms of enrollment) and could as easily have made the playoffs in one class as another.

Perhaps an example is in order. Glenbard West is ranked in the Class 7A poll for the 2019 regular season. That is done because, when all the schools playing football are divided into eight sets containing an equal number of schools (based on enrollment as adjusted by multipliers and success factors), Glenbard West falls into the second set (the group containing the second largest schools) or 7A. However, they are one of the largest schools in that set and therefore it is quite possible when the playoff qualifiers are announced they will be one of the 32 largest schools in the playoffs. In that case, Glenbard West will then be designated an 8A school and the Associated Press Poll that ranks teams right before the playoffs will rank them with the other 8A teams. It would be wrong, though, to say they never had a chance to make the playoffs as a 7A school. I do not have a complete set of records, but I do know in the last ten years Glenbard West has qualified for the playoffs as a 7A school at least four times, and as an 8A school at least two times. One truly does not know for sure in which class they will play during the playoffs until after the regular season is over.

The only alternative for ranking purposes during the regular season would be to rank all the schools as one large collective body irrespective of school size. If that were done, though, almost all the teams in the top 30 would be 8A and 7A schools (with a sprinkling of 6A and 5A schools), and one would gain no practical insight into the relative strengths of the schools smaller than 5A. In my view that is not desirable.
