I had to watch Braveheart to restore my spirits.

Alas, we have no William Wallace on the bench.

Why, year after year, is it so hard for us to find shooters that can score when they are open. This has been going on for many years.

We didn't even really have any open shooters today, though, due to a rare bad game by Pardon.

Wisc does play good defense but I thought we had our share of open looks that we missed. As usual we got nobody who can shoot off the dribble or when not squared up. It’s kind of like in football where we haven’t had anyone who can take over the game from the WR position for a long time.

Here are Avery's three pointers on a thorough beatdown by the Badgers.

Northwestern outclassed by Wisconsin
I don't think we are a bad team. We are decent. Middle of the road team. The refs make it difficult to win on the road. Worse yet,are midweek games. My guess is we have about a 10-15% chance to beat Maryland. Personally, I find it difficult to watch as I think other factors ( refs, home crowd, mid week) are the real culprits. I turned off the game in the first half after I saw our guys get hacked underneath the basket on two to three possessions in a row. We have talent. Maybe next year. I really don't think it is our team's fault as much as not having a " basketball history"! Refs are just killing us. Either way,I can't watch to much of it. I think I'm like that for all sports, even outside of NU,like the Bears, golf, tennis, etc. When losing happens,I'm out doing household errands or chores.

And to add to the misery, Illinois beats Maryland on the road. Damnit.

Unfortunately, Illinois will be favored to beat NU at CU.
We'll be favored against Rutgers, Penn State and Minnesota, all at home. Should be dogs in the rest.

With Taylor throwing up bricks, and Law at less than 100%, our offense is a disaster right now. I think our best (only) scoring run included Falzon making a few threes.

I'm not so sure we'll be favored over Minny. Maybe because it's at home. I actually thought the defense was pretty good, although I didn't see the last few minutes of the game. It's called basketball because you've got to put the ball through the basket, and we seem to have trouble doing this. Unfortunately, Taylor hasn't been the answer and Falzon is still limited. Law is a very streaky shooter and has had physical problems besides. Pardon is basically an inside scorer and is going to have problems against good centers unless the Cats can hit from outside and open up the court a bit — something they usually haven't been able to do so far. We seem to have gone from a team that under Carmody gunned from outside and couldn't do much underneath to a team that is somewhat the opposite. It didn't help that Wisconsin was hitting on all cylinders. Trice had a streak where he couldn't buy a basket earlier in this season, and I think he came out and hit his first 3-4 against the Cats. They are tough when they're hitting, as you almost have to double Happ.

There were plenty of open shots. We just did not hit them. Also Gains was driving plenty with the ball as were Law and Pardon and yet only about 4 fouls were called on WIS in those instances (one for Gaines, an and one for Law and two or three and ones for Pardon) So overall, at most, only one called on a driving shot that did not go in. Pretty unusual as was the charge on Law on the fast break.

Agreed plenty of good looks we just good not make shots. Quite frustrating. I think mostly Wisconsin plays good D, but reffing did tilt a bit towards them. That charge on Law was ridiculous. That wasn’t the reason we lost though, they outplayed us.
