Wendell is supposed to be a great defender and scorer and good FT shooter. We will find out!

80% free throw shooter. 2.5 steals per game, 1.5 blocks per game. I'll take it! Vernon Carey is 71% from the free throw line, FWIW.

Wendell Moore's HS Stats

Also, he shot 85.5% in 22 AAU games last year (118 for 138). So yeah, he should be fairly reliable.

Vernon is a bit lazy on defense I have heard. I was listening to the Devils Den podcast a few days ago and they were also talking about how Hurt is very bad defensively if Duke is able to land Hurt. Our defense won’t be nearly as good as this previous season it sounds like, but at least we should be a lot better along the perimeter.

The more I see of um, Moore the more I like him. Justice 2.0 Big wing with great wingspan. Carey reminds me of Okafor.. I know we aren't supposed to compare but I can't help it.

I've been excited about Carey since he was a sophomore in HS. Dude is a beast, will be the closest thing college basketball has to Zion next year.
Moore as well, he seems to be a late riser ,a la Justise Winslow. The worry on Moore is that now it appears he may be a shoe-in to be a starter, and may very well play himself into a OAD player, the hype lately on him in real.
The thing I like about Moore is he won't need the ball to be effective, he can get his based off of cutting and great defense.

I want Hurt too, but like others have said, he is atrocious defensively, imagine this...he's a white guy that lacks lateral movement. Him and Carey at the 4/5 would be an defensive issue, however if Bolden comes back, Bolden can really help defensively down low.
The thought of Hurt/Carey offensively though at the 4/5 is super scary.

If we struggle defensively, K won't hesitate to go zone. After we lost to NC State in January of 2018, our defensive efficiency was 108th in the country. We played zone almost 100% of the time the last month of the season, and we finished 9th in the KenPom defensive efficiency category. I'm sure K wants to play man-to-man, but he ain't going through another season like 2014 again.

Whatever wins us games, I’m cool with!

How about Bolden/Javin at the 5, Carey/Jack at the 4, and Hurt/Baker at the 3?

Carey-Javin-Hurt could work in a sense. But, Hurt could only guard the 4s on defense, not quick enough to check the 3s. Javin could guard anyone from 3-5, I believe. I don't think Carey-Bolden could see many (if any) minutes together on the floor together, however.

Carey definitely needs work on his conditioning. Watched yesterday and he got tired very easily and was often the last guy running down the court which lead to him struggling on defense. He’s very good offensively and I’m sure K will get him in good enough shape so he can play some long periods of time.

20 minutes of Carey and 20 minutes of Bolden sounds about right. I've got Javin at the 4 with Hurt 20/20. If we don't get Hurt Javin is the man at the 4, with maybe 10 for Jack.

To be fair, he is coming off an ankle injury that was substantial enough that it kept him out of the McDonald's AA Game, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity most kids wouldn't miss unless they had to.

Oh yeah I’m aware. He’s already a big guy plus coming off an injury where he hasnt been able to practice fully will definitely take a toll but i know when watching him in the past it’s sort of the same way but not as bad as yesterday

Let Moore guard the three, Javin and White for spells could handle the assignment for limited minutes but are more suited for guarding the 4/5 spots. If Bolden returns and Duke lands Hurt:

Carey/Bolden
Javin/Hurt/ White
Moore/White/Baker
Alex/Moore
Goldwire/ Ellis.

That’s not great but not bad for defense.

Just came back from an injury during state playoffs. He will be just fine. Didn't have any problems prior to getting injuried. K told him what he needed to do and if anybody paid attention to him throughout this year, there is a difference in him he clearly displayed his senior year.

If Tre doesn't come back and we don't get RJ we'd probably roll out 3 bigs with Hurt/Baker, Javin and Carey. It would become our strength. Not ideal though. A team that starts Jordan and AOC might be in trouble. One, but not both. This is a worst case scenario though. Actually worst would be not getting Hurt either. :)

We'll need experience though. Javin guarding a 3 could work.

I don't think there's anyway Moore isn't starting at 3 at this point. A starting 5 of Goldwire, AOC, Hurt, Javin, and Carey would be REALLY bad on D and with not enough weapons on O. Jordan or Javin have to get better offensively or it will be hard to play them both next year at the same time for extended minutes.

Can't Moore play the 2?

He strikes me as a Justice Winslow type. I suppose he COULD play 2, but you would be playing him out of position so you could play Matthew Hurt out of position too. If we land Hurt, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come off the bench as the 6th man with a frontcourt rotation of Carey, Javin, Bolden, and Hurt. There's probably 15-25 minutes a piece for each of them similar to our frontcourt in 2010.

They have been hit and miss every since Slater left. Not saying Hurt won't be at Duke, but TDD premium is different for sure. Evan Daniels is the guy to keep a eye on when it comes to recruits. Not to mention twitter world gets info just as fast now.

I believe Evan Daniels picked Duke for Matthew Hurt.

Yeah he did a few months ago. Stated it was more based off he liked where Duke was at the time. I think he comes to Duke, but he better gain some weight and find some quickness and lift. I think we see a graduate transfer as well.

Hurt is gonna come here, then transfer??

COME ON MAN!!!
