seeing the players in action it just seems like NU shouldn't even be compettive. illinois outclassed NU at every position athletically. Seeing spencer in person makes you appreciate his competitive fire even more - very cool to see him go right at Ayo. if you can't see the difference in recruiting at the bigs position - oturo and kofi just hammer that point home

cats had no answer for Kofi early - and then Beran got toasted on back-to-back threes to kill NU's late momentum. cats gave griffin wide open threes all night and it killed them.

- nance had a quiet 12/7 but put together another solid game.
- we desperately need athletic wings. hopefully gaines audige and berry help in that regard
- kofi just black-holed young tonight. just swallowed him up. has a shaq like feel to his game comparative to college players
- like how the cats battled after the minnesota showing

looking at the stats - same glaring areas:
- rebounds - 29 to 42
- made 3's - NU 5/20 and Ill 8/23 - those three made 3's are the 9 points that won illini the game

other stats are very similar:
FG: NU 25/61 - ILL 27/58
fouls - NU 16 - ILL 15
TO - NU 5 - ILL 8
asst - NU 11 - ILL 19
fast break - NU 12 - ILL 14
paint points - NU 32 - Ill 28
points off turn over - NU 5 - Ill 6
FT - NU 11/16 - ILL 12/15

those 3 extra made threes were the difference

Illini ball rotation was excellent tonight and we just can't keep up on defense. They got their best 3 point shooter wide open shots all night and he made them. Our guys need to work real hard this off-season and they should have plenty of motivation.

Aside from the game, I'd love for Teddy or another reporter to ask Phillips if he's embarrassed to see the arena like this every night. Section 201 had maybe 4 Northwestern fans tonight, including me and my friend.

why would he ask that? Feels like an angry rather than professional question.

Because I would like to know if Phillips is satisfied with the pricing scheme that has resulted in pushing longtime season ticket holders to the upper deck while opposing fans happily scalp lower level seats or get them through corporate clients.

I’ll admit it. I had such a miserable time at the Michigan game being the only NU fan in my entire section in my “premium” upper deck seats that I sold mine tonight. I can’t stand going anymore and it’s not because of the team. At the old WRR I had regular fans around me that came to every game. It made it fun even when we sucked. Now it’s just miserable going to these games, so thanks to the Illini fans that paid a fortune for my upper deck crap tickets.

I wonder if he's ever even been up to the upper deck.

On a related note, it could have been worse. Because 8/23 is ok, but not great. Lots of open shots. While Griffin was great, Frazier was 1-9.

Silver lining for me can only be that our kids are high character kids. Who fight, regardless.

It's worth mentioning that Young executed some crafty moves to score a few baskets against Kofi. As we've discussed, Young is limited athletically. He's got a nice arsenal of 'old guy at the Y' moves so that he can still be effective offensively though (shooting 53% from the field, by far the highest on the team).

In the postgame, Joey asked a good strong question in his aw-shucks manner. He casually said to Collins something in the ballpark of, "You guys can't get a stop when you needed one."

The point Joey made several times during the broadcast is a good one. It's hard to come back when your defense is average. I know Griffin was on fire, but he's not the first one.

This has become my greatest concern for the upcoming years. The defense inside blows, leaving those wide open threes.

I hope this is a bit of the Gaines effect, but I'm not sure.

I thought it was hilarious that the Orange Krush went to the trouble of buying Northwestern gear that they could take off and reveal -- SURPRISE! -- that they were Illini fans. Thirty fans all wearing purple would have been the bigger surprise.

The other difference is we started three frosh, a Soph and Spencer while their starting lineup was at least one year older. Huge difference. And overall it seemed we were not that far away. We also have been missing a lot of FTs lately that hurts. Buie was inaccurate from deep and Young was able to get good shots but was a little off and missed getting two rather than his usual 8-10. THat would have had us right there

I did not like him taking so many threes. But he was able to get open shots inside and just missing them. If he was hitting them, different ball game. Same with our missed FT and I think Buie was o for outside as well.

Huh? Illinois’ top three scorers were freshmen and sophomores. The upper classmen were terrible, 4-24 from the field for 15 points total.

Another major problem that he has is that he feels the need to make a couple of dribbles, instead of just going up at the basket.

That's some seriously flawed logic when it comes to basketball and sports.

It's the same logic that had several people in here saying if we had Buie in Champaign we would have won the game. He would have surely scored 5 points! We would have won the game!!!!!!!

Problem is, it assumes that everything stays the same, and that one action does not affect anything else in the game. And it does.

So Young makes a couple of shots? Who's to say because of that, he does not take another 4 shots he misses? You know, because he made a couple? And those extra four happen to be in possessions where yesterday Nance scored? Who's to say what happens with minutes of other players on the floor? What happens to the other team adjusting?

There's no way you can know stuff like this. It's a very static view. It is also a very one sided view. I'm positive the orange could tell you 10 different ways things could have gone better for them.

You know, Feliz averages 11. He scored 4. If only he had hit 3 more shots. Different game. He was 1-8

You know, Frazier shoots 34% from deep. He was 1-9 from 3. If only he had hit a couple more. Different game

Honestly? I noticed a full section of younger kids all in purple up there and was wondering what was up. Not sure which side comes out worse in that transaction.

I understand why our fan enthusiasm is down this year - duh - but I’m really, really tired of being outnumbered by visitors every time out. I actually love my seats in the upper deck. We’re right at midcourt and the view is fantastic, better than many angles I’ve seen when I have had a chance to head downstairs. But they didn’t even open the concessions up there last night, at least on our side. We can’t win a game. And the program wants us to pony up extra donations for anything outside of a few rows up top for the privilege of buying tickets?

I’ll continue to attend games as long as life permits because I love my school, I like being there, I like listening to the band, and I appreciate that our kids play hard all the time. But I really don’t get a lot of the executive decisions made the last few years. We’re flush with cash from BTN, we built this palace entirely with donations, and then we set it up in a way that’s so entirely not conducive to the “wildcat den” environment they were pitching when they published the renderings. Sad.

A few things I liked from last night. First, Pete Nance was solid again. He looks like he’s just playing, and not thinking about everything the last few games. Second, Robbie Beran had that drive where he took it strong and finished with a dunk! He tried that earlier in the season, but it didn’t work out the same way. More of this please, as I think it is growth in his aggressiveness. Boo drove to the basket more, I believe. He didn’t always finish, but drew a couple of fouls, and went to the line. When the 3s aren’t falling, he can get into the lane, and needs to do that.

At the end of the day, they need to figure out the defense. I believe Haywood pointed out in another post that their first shot defense isn’t bad, but the multiple shots from not clearing the rebounds are causing problems. Clearing the defensive rebound is part of defense. A big guy who goes after rebounds like the ball owes him money would make a big difference. Also, our guys who get to the rim and have the ability, finish strong with a dunk! Who knows, maybe they’ll draw a couple more fouls.

Not about feeling better or not. About hating this aura of "but if only one little thing had gone our way. We were so close. Can't catch a break"

We got work to do. And I'm confident the character of our players will show when they return from the summer stronger.

Chris is a very good coach who runs an effective offense. His kids play tough and are generally well prepared. I’m an Illinois grad who watches a lot of NU basketball and CC is going to get it done at NU. You’re the least experienced team in the B10, but help is on the way. My one criticism of CC this year relates to Nance’s development relative to his talent level. If he transfers, the program reputation will take a hit.
