If we’re being honest, I’m sure Pope is working hard. It’s that he doesn’t get it. That or he does know and is simply incapable of pursuing what he really wants.

You missed the point. It was not about how much he is working. It is how much he is talking. He has already used the talent on the 1996 team as a reference for this team. The point is shut up and stop telling us what you are going to do, how you are going to do it or how good this teams going to be. You can tell us what you did after you demonstrate you have done something that has made this team better. The more he talks the more I hate listening to him.
The only way this works is to make these guys run until they puke. Maybe kick someone off the team. Send messages. Don’t give these guys time to think about whether they like each other. The more divisive they are the more they run. A good coach will not allow himself to come across as soft. Pope doesn’t command anything nor does he demand anything. So how do you solve that? You become the sheriff. You use the bench. You run them. You have to make them hate losing. And if you can’t get there in a reasonable way well you have to punish them in a way someone quits. Heck you may end up with 8 guys at the end of the day but that will be the 8 guys you can go to war with.
