Some good games this weekend:

Hinsdale South @ Glenbard West
Downers Grove South @ Hinsdale Central
Oak Park @ Addison Trail

It looks like it's the top 3 teams from the Gold vs the top 3 teams from the Silver. Personally, I don't think the gold wins either of those games but that isn't because they aren't legit, it's because GBW, HC & OPRF are all REALLY, REALLY good this year. Should be some good games this weekend.

I don't think they'll be blowouts, I think all teams will hold their own. They won't be last second losses but they'll be closer than most will think.

Least likely blowout is West against HS. HS has some talent on offense that will give West's undersized DBs fits. If the game was on turf it would be even tighter.

DS might get beat by 50. AT will be lucky to cover the 35 pt spread

My money is on the OVER if the line is 115

Capnbill,
Sounds like you have actually done some scouting. Many believe HS defense (led by Josh King) is the strength of the team. However, with the talent (size, speed, athleticism) HS has at the skill positions, their offense cannot be taken lightly. GBW defense will certainly provide a huge challenge.

trust me, no one at West is underestimating HS. This game is as serious as Da Brook over here. After week 1, we know we have at least four (sorry AT ) really tough games coming up and HS is the first one.

Any chance Mr King could take a Labor Day weekend trip to Michigan? We would love to see him, but would totally understand if he needed some time off?

In all seriousness, I do hope you enjoy Duchon Field. It is a fun place to play and we do our best to respect our visitors. Cheers

Looking forward to a good game a Duchon. BTW, did curly's close? Was thinking about stopping their beforehand for a bite to eat. If closed, any other places nearby you might suggest?

Northside is a few blocks from the field and most of our conf opponents rally there. You may find a few West fans there as well but they are harmless and fun.

Here is my analysis for the GBW vs HS game. As long as HS plays competitively throughout the game I'll be happy with that. The thing that HS has going for them is they literally have nothing to lose, nobody thinks they will win, in fact nobody thinks it'll even be a close game. Should be a fun, loose game for them.

So, I guess Hornet Nation, you are right in a sense that this is somewhat of a measuring stick but I don't think it's the main measuring stick. So, I'll agree with you...just a little bit.

I think GBW goes out and scores early, maybe goes up 14-0 in the 1st half at some point, but then the game will slow down and South will play their way back into the game. I think the final is 34-33 GBW 3 OT's............................................................................................

LOL,

As the season progresses, there will be a few measurement points: DGS, ATS, HC as well.

This would make for a fun game to watch. The thing that happens to most if they end up down early, is that they get worn down by the field and look to exit early. An amazingly talented OPRF team came to Duchon 3 years ago, got down by a couple of early scores and folded up tent for a 49-0 rout. Those games aren't fun to watch.

It is one thing to be ready to play football at 1:30pm on Saturday. It is another to want to play football at 4pm on Saturday when you are trailing by 14 and the other team is relentlessly attacking the line of scrimmage. Now throw on top that it will be 90+ degrees Saturday and it makes for a long, long road back during the 3rd and 4th quarter. You have to have a tremendous amount of heart to last 48 minutes on Duchon.

When teams beat West, at West, it is usually because they are in the game from the get go.. LZ and Stevie came back (from 7 and 3 point deficits resp.) for State semis wins, but each game time temp was 20 degrees with a 0 degree wind chill.

We are excited to see the HS studs in action. My guess is that none of those kids, on either sideline will want to play beyond 48 minutes. So let's not wish 3OT on them (or us).

Haha, yeah I was messing around with the 34-33 3 OT's, but that would be epic. It will be disgustingly hot on Saturday. When was the last time GBW lost at home? The haven't lost a conference game in 3 years right?

Last and only conference loss since 2008 was Lyons in week 9 of 2010. Team was looking ahead to avenge prior year State final loss and lost focus.

The *** whuppin those boys received the next week is legendary around here. Every kid is reminded all through the summer by the alumni that you never want to have to face Hetlett after a loss...especially conference.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion (even us lowly HS supporters). However, I don't think so.

Of course, I could have my head up my a## and be completely wrong.

That's why we play the games.

No one is knocking HS by saying blowout, HS is s very solid 6a team with a chance at being more than solid come playoff time but GBW is on another level.

GBW is not underestimating HS, nor is it their practice to underestimate. They play each game to win and don't assume that the opponent is ever easy. I hope HS plays hard and keeps our boys focused for what will be a tough conference season.

Maybe should have added the Morton @ LT game.

Mustangs lead the Lions 20-13 at halftime.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Good for Morton, hopefully they can hold on to it. AT is playing OPRF tough, down 14-7 while DGS is getting smoked 28-0 right now. Leyden is beating York 14-6.

Hinsdale Central 42 Downers Grove South 7
Lyons 23 Morton 20
York 21 Leyden 14
Downers Grove North 34 Proviso East 0
Oak Park 35 Addison Trail 7
Willowbrook 16 Proviso West 6

Couple close ones and the rest blowouts. Up to Hinsdale South to save face for the Gold and pull off the biggest upset of the year.....24-21 South wins. Calling it now. ;)

Keep it Wild, Mustang! I am saying that I am not sandbagging. I believe that this game will be close. I do see West pulling away and think HS is much better than any other team in the WSG. By far

GW wins this game by 38 points. At this early point in the season the dif is 41, but I'll go with 38. Gonna be hot and humid this afternoon.

So the official spread after everyone weighing in is -31 GBW and O/U is 55. I'm taking South +31 and the Under.

So the final tally was 127? My over bet paid off.

HS covered the spread by putting a couple on the West JV for a 50-31 final but I do not begrudge them the final score because they played well enough in the first 30 minutes of that game to beat most every team in the state.

As I said earlier though, having to play your studs both ways, visiting teams often get overwhelmed in the 2nd half. If HS punches that ball in from the 1 with 6 minutes left in 3rd quarter it is 24-14 HS. West comes up huge and blows up back-up running back (starter RB was hurt b/c he also plays LB). QB recovers the initial fumble but gets blown up by a second wave of LBs and West takes over inside their own 5. Heavy dose of Brodner and 99 yards later HS looked totally spent. The next 12 minutes sees West score 29 points and the game is over.

Just sorry the HS backup guys won't see the field this week.. HS kept starters in until the end and West played their JV guys for the 4th quarter, so they won't play a JV game. That is a shame
