GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 19, 2023) – Sophomore Grant Siegel and four relievers for the West Virginia baseball team combined to throw a one-hitter, Sunday afternoon against UNC Greensboro, defeating the Spartans, 8-0, to complete the series sweep. The Mountaineers have now won nine straight games and improve to 15-4 on the season while UNCG falls to 10-10.
An infield hit in the third inning was the only thing that kept the Mountaineers from history. WVU pitchers also faced just two batters over the minimum in the game as the defense turned five double plays.
Siegel picked up his second win of the season by throwing five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. With the help of three double plays, he faced the minimum 15 batters in his outing.
Freshman Robby Porco was the first out of the bullpen for the Mountaineers and struck out two in the sixth before sophomore Keegan Allen pitched a perfect seventh inning. Redshirt-senior Noah Short had the most traffic on the bases for any WVU pitcher, but a double play helped him get out of the eighth unscathed. Junior Carlson Reed put the finishing touches on the masterpiece with a strikeout in a scoreless ninth.
At the plate, junior Braden Barry hit his second home run of the series, a three-run shot that gave the Mountaineers some breathing room early in the game. Sophomore JJ Wetherholt, junior Landon Wallace, and redshirt-senior Tevin Tucker each added two hits for West Virginia.
Freshman Logan Sauve gave the Mountaineers the early lead in the second with a sacrifice fly before Barry’s fourth home run of the season made it 4-0 after two innings.
Tucker forced in a run in the third as he drew a bases-loaded walk before redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely was hit by a pitch in the sixth with the bases loaded. The Mountaineers tacked on another run in the sixth on a run-scoring double play. In the ninth, Tucker made it 8-0 with an RBI single.
West Virginia will now return home for six games beginning with a two-game series against Hofstra on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch from Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark on Tuesday is set for 6:30 p.m.
