West Virginia or Marshall?

I am from Iowa and am a lifelong Iowa Hawkeyes fan. I moved to Kentucky a few years ago and met my wife. We are looking to relocate to Clarksburg West Virginia where her sister is, next year. Although I am a Iowa fan, I still want a local team to root for. I know Clarksburg is closer to Morgantown, and this is going to be a biased bored, but what are some reasons why it is better to be a Mountaineer than Thundering Herd? What are some differences in the schools? I am predominantly a football and wrestling fan. I do follow basketball as well though. When I think of West Virginia football I think of Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Noel Devine. Also a guy named Bobby Bowden came from there. WVU is in the Big 12 now, and I hate, hate, hate, the Iowa State Cyclowns with a passion.

Marshall's football program is far below WVU's. So is MU basketball. MU fans consider a win in Conference USA at least equal to a WVU win in the Big 12. They are so jealous it warps their minds. WVU also has a rising wrestling program. Overall, WVU fan support is much, much greater.

Big12 or Conference USA team? Plus you get a chance to watch us kick the crap outta Iowa State like the poster above said. But seriously since you have no affiliation with either I don't see why you can't be a fan of both. Welcome to West Virginia!

Think of them as JV and Varsity teams. It shouldn't take too long to figure out which one is the JV team.

Huntington is a fun place to go to watch football. I grew up in Charleston, so I went to many games with my dad. The Herd used to play at the lower level, so like myself there are many fans of both Universities in this state. That being said..... WVU football IS West Virginia! The people you will meet and enjoy the spirit of game day with will be some of the best people you will ever meet. Even growing up in Iowa, you will realize that this state has something special. It's not just down to earth people that work hard. It is something from our history and geography that becomes a part of all of us. Traveling to Morgantown on 79, lookout over the mountainsides and forests and a connection to this mountain spirit will grow within you.

Game day in Morgantown, you will feel the pride. It doesn't just stem from the Univeristy or the state.....it's much deeper than that for most of us. I'm not saying that there isn't tones of this in Huntington, but it thrives in WVU.....win or lose.

I am afraid Mr. Deeds, a member of this board since 2006, might just be having a little fun on this and the Marshall board.

How am I having a bit of fun? I was just about to post on here that I was much more welcomed here and called a troll on the Marshall board. The WVU board at least sounded a little more down to earth. Go to the Iowa board and see I have over 6,000 posts. This is just my second post on this board, that is why it only says 2 posts. I have never had a need to be on this board before. Now I ask a honest question and don't get taken seriously by a few (not all).

Please don't equate this board with what WVU fans are like. Ive told myself I'm not getting back on here many times because of the name calling and dorks acting like they know it all, but I still get on to seek out information and discussion. Most on here are good people trying to foster community.

Compare the conferences, compare the schedules, compare the bowl appearances, compare the stadiums, compare the nationally televised games, compare the NCAA tournament records, visit Huntington and Morgantown, choose your favorite colors, look at pictures of cheerleaders, roll the words Mountaineers and Thundering Herd across your tongue a few times, pick whoever is closest, pick whoever plays a school from Iowa you don't like, compare coaches choices in beverage, compare their clothes, look at the arrest records of former players, pick your team based on former players who are in the pros, flip a coin, consult the I Ching, get a Tarot reading, visit a fortune teller. I'm just about out of ideas! I went to school at WVU and can't imagine ever REALLY caring about another school.

West Virginia, almost heaven but we couldn't get rid of Huntington. I grew up and live near Huntington, work in Huntington, and even went to MU for two years prior to transferring to WVU. I would LOVE to live in Morgantown but my family is here. There is this strange mentality in Huntington and Marshall that is hard to explain but it's not good...hateful actually. Many MU fans have two favorite teams, Marshall and someone bigger (UK, Ohio State, Alabama, UNC, etc.). I want to root for both schools but man do the Herdies make it difficult. Many people (me) refer to MU as Cabell County Community College (CCCC) and when I went there a long time ago, it seemed like just an extension of high school. It's funny to hear stories from my wife, who is not from here and is a UK fan, about the obnoxious MU fans she has to deal with daily. Anyway, WELCOME to WV and I hope you like it here. The mountain biking and cycling in general is great!

Huntington is a great city with wide streets and churches every 30 yards.
WVU is the flagship university of the state. And Morgantown is a pretty friendly city, too, except on game day if visiting fans try to be smartalecs.

Mountaineer football is the greatest sports bargain in the world for me. I've had season tickets for two decades.

If you are for real, and you're thinking Clarksburg, then you better like Italian food because the best Italian-American Festival in the state is there, and most of the inhabitants are Italian, or were for a lot of years.

Marshall. You can usually go to the games free. A couple of years ago, I parked near the stadium and left a couple of spare tickets under the windshield wiper. When I got back to the car after the game, there were 10 tickets under my wipers!

Also, it's much quieter in Marshall's stadium, so you ears aren't ringing after the game.

Every area and every fan base has good people and idiots. I've seen a ton of moron WVU fans over the years in all parts of the state (I saw quite a few of them at the baseball game last night). How you deal with fans of opposing teams can also determine their treatment of you. Maybe your wife's coworkers think she's an obnoxious UK fan...I've met some of those as well.

I think you are full of ****. I was at the baseball game last night and no one was out of hand from either fan base.

A ton of moron WVU fans? Ha! I will admit there are a few, but not a ton. Sounds to me like the MtnbikEER's post struck a nerve with you. And btw, he never said anything about his wife's coworkers. Reading comprehension, try it. I'm starting to know who the moron is.

Haha...I was at the baseball game too and have no clue what AWS1022 is talking about with respect to anyone being morons. No, my wife is not an obnoxious UK fan but that's so great of you to go ahead and make such a rude assumption based on nothing. So I'm going to go ahead an assume that you are an MU fan then which would fit the exact mold of person to which I was referring. She's far from an obnoxious fan or person and actually she doesn't much care for Calipari and the one and done. She really liked watching WVU play basketball this year because they play defense and play as a team.

Ask your sister-in-law, she'll explain it to you.

BTW, if you like Italian food you are moving to the right place. I lived in Clarksburg for many years and it is one of the best little-known restaurant towns in the state.

Obviously you weren't sitting on the Marshall side where the loud mouth WVU fans were sitting. Why sit on the opposing team's side is beyond me, but I guess that's what idiot fans do. And yes, there are a ton of moron WVU fans, but you wouldn't see it because you're a WVU fan. And by the way, there were a few idiot Marshall fans as well.

I didn't say she was an obnoxious UK fan, I said maybe some people perceive her as one. There are fans out there that if you don't say how great their team is then they treat you like you're an obnoxious homer. And no, I am not an MU fan, but if you had been sitting on the Marshall side at the game last night you would know what I was talking about. The Marshall players know exactly the group I'm talking about so if you're being loud and obnoxious enough for the players to notice, then you're being an idiot.

You'd get 50 yard line seats at Marshall for the cost of a McDonalds Happy Meal; only, what you get to see won't make you happy. Just sayin.

As far as WVU/MU is concerned....WVU....it's not even close.
On a side note, my son-in-law's grandfather played football at Iowa with Niles Kinnick. S-I-L's father is named Niles after Kinnick.

about the equivalent of deciding between rooting for The Ohio State University Buckeyes or the Ohio University Bobcats. The answer is obvious.

Unless you attended Ohio University.

That's the great thing about college sports, it's very personal. It's what makes it fun.

Welcome to West Virginia. We're glad you're here and hope you enjoy your stay.

I'm very partial to Morgantown and the university. Morgantown is more cosmopolitan culturally and diverse. There is a lot more to see and do. Plus, Morgantown has better restaurants, nightlife and just a better overall quality of life. There's always a festival of some sort each month.

Regarding sports, I think the football and basketball games are just at a higher level of competition. The tailgating and pre-game pageantry are top notch and very close to what I've seen in the SEC and better in a lot of respects than most ACC schools. As you know, WVU has a great history of success in a lot of sports. I do support Marshall and hope they are successful, except whenever they might be playing WVU.

Obviously Morgantown has great outdoors. I hope you will try some of the outdoors activities.

It's like living in Iowa, and trying to decide whether to be a Drake University football fan, or a Iowa Hawkeye fan. Not that there's anything wrong with being a Drake fan. I'm sure the University of Marshall is a great place in it's own way.
