The game was closer than the score indicated, with Westfield pulling away late in the game. After a WF punt on the opening drive SB took the ball and drove quickly down the field. The usually tough WF defense was getting blown off the line of scrimmage until SB got to the red zone, where after two runs for a loss they were stopped on 4th down. On this drive the SB QB (Thompson) was injured and left the game. Reports overheard on the sideline said he broke his leg; the injury greatly affected SB the rest of the game.

WF got their first TD on a 17 yard Scanlon to Clancy pass at the 6:45 mark to go up 7-0. SB answered two plays later with a 77 yard TD run by Breece to tie it at 7-7. WF's punting game was superb in the first half, keeping SB pinned most of the time and when forced to punt it resulted in good starting position for WF on most drives. The WF offense still struggled at times due to the lack of a strong running game. The half ended 7-7.

At the beginning of the second half the WF defense had figured out the SB offense (which was certainly hampered by the loss of Thompson) and started to shut down most SB drives. SB got the ball to open the 2nd half and started on their own 20. After a penalty and a short loss, they were on their own 8 yard line when the snap went over the QB's head. He chased the ball down at the back of the end zone, avoided stepping out of bounds, and outran several defenders as he ran across the back of the endzone and advanced the ball to the 2 yard line on the far side to avoid the safety. An outstanding hustle play by McIntyre. On the next play SB had to punt and gave the ball back to WF on the SB 35. WF advanced the ball to the SB 3 yard line and on 4th and 1 Clancy scored from the 3 to put WF up 14-7 with 5:41 to go in the 3rd quarter.

After forcing SB to go 3 and out, WF drove to the SB 20 where they stalled, attempting and missing a 37 yard Delaney FG that was wide right. At this point, the miss FG seemed huge because WF was not moving the ball well or for a sustained amount of time and the score remained 14-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. It was still anyone's game.

After 2 SB punts and a WF punt on the next three possessions WF got the ball on the SB 45. On the first play Scanlon hit James for a 55 yard TD to extend the lead to 21-7 with 6:24 left. SB later was pinned deep in their own end late in the game and threw a lateral pass that was fumbled and recovered by WF on the SB 3 yard line. Several plays later Cockrill caught a 4 yard Scanlon pass for the final score of 28-7.

Also, #25 Joe Caron had a nice interception for Westfield in the second half. That opening Stone Bridge drive that ended up turning over on downs took about 10 minutes off the first quarter clock. Was sorry to see the Stone Bridge QB get hurt - he is a special talent and certainly would have kept Stone Bridge in the game. Delaney won the field position game for Westfield for sure with his kick-offs and punts. Seems to be having some issues in the FG game though. Stone Bridge always big and tough on the line of scrimmage and this game was no different than usual. I was waiting for the refs to call an Unsportsmanlike Conduct - "#68 - lineman too big for high school football." LOL.

Thanks for the write up. I couldn't make it to the game and the GamedayMag streaming video only works on one or two games each week, not this one. Hopefully SB can adjust for the loss of Thompson and move on with their season.

His injury was a huge loss. Prior to that, his decisions to pull the ball out and run, and the yards he gained doing so, were critical to SB moving the ball. The offense was just not the same with him out. When SB tried to pass later in the game playing catch up, the passes were usually just a bit off the mark. I was on the SB sideline and you could sense the frustration of the kids that things were just not quite right. Best wishes to him in his recovery.
