What’s going on at Dayton

Nothing wrong with Dayton. They simply can't offer enough to retain players they have developed. This system is terrible for smaller schools. They develop guys who then leave for schools like us.

Yep, the mid majors have now basically become like a minor league farm system for the power conferences.

You develop the talent when they’re raw and …if they become good enough …we’ll call them up to where real NIL money is.

And they are doing that now, right?

But probably not for long. Remember, this new era where we have both an unrestricted free for all transfer portal and NIL money (also with no limits) is only a couple years old.

And it has totally transformed the sport. The mid majors simply cannot hold on to talent now. Any time they somehow get a guy with real promise he’s gone at the end of the season.

The days of seeing studs like Steph Curry, Ja Morant and Damian Lillard come from tiny mid majors might be gone forever. Those guys would’ve transferred right after their freshman season if they were playing today.

Very much true. I work in Dayton and its a pretty depressing city lol.

Dayton actually has a very strong Nil program. Brea was offered a great deal that he agreed to and then changed agents to Klutch Sports who said he was being undersold and he backed out of our deal. Koby is a great kid and a really good 3pt shooter…he got bad advice.Dayton take a look at his numbers is a perfect spot and conference for him… he will be over his skis at UK, he is a very poor defender , doesn’t get to the basket check his free throws and doesn’t run the break. We had a dominate center who was double teamed and gave him open looks..he will give ya 2 or 3 3s a game and not much else at that level of conference. He should leave his ego at the door and come back. Keep this post…his playing time by season end will reduce….he cannot match up in the SEC.
PS had surgery on both legs last summer and had pins put in both legs…

Sounds exactly like capitalism, which is the system we all favor correct? Think of Dayton as the mom and pop grocery store and UK as Walmart.

Yes Capitalism is awesome but not in this example. Screw Walmart they don’t need the extra business. There should still be a place for mom and pop stores.

Welcome to the new college basketball where teams like Dayton and Indiana St get raided now they have to raid others below them.

It's kind of fun right now as a fan of a big power school like Kentucky. We get to pick from the best portal players since there is NIL money to go with all of the facilities, fan base, tradition, etc.. As a graduate of Murray, which also boasts a rich history and tradition, they just don't have the NIL to compete much like Dayton, Indiana St and many more mid majors. What is happening is NOT good for college sports (semi pro) but I'm hopeful some of the recent discussions about profit sharing will make NIL a short lived nightmare.

As somebody stated earlier, these schools will start having access to high school kids they didn't have access to before. When schools take more transfers than freshmen, the number of freshman recruits to the higher level schools will open the doors to these schools for them, but then those kids that pan out will just transfer up in a year or two. Schools like Dayton will become feeder schools.

From a financial standpoint, if you look at it like Moneyball, it is probably smarter to bring in transfers than HS kids. I imagine top 10 HS guys will want more than older guys but probably won't actually produce stats like the older guys.
