That's right mojo, Saban wanted him for o-line. That's his only shot at playing on Sunday's.

Never read anything that said Matt was being recruited by bama for o-line. Matt was a project but was recruited for his size and his quickness. He does fine in specific sets.

Don't think Bama was recruiting Matt for their o. line. Believe they had in mind he was a project and a red shirt candidate if signed.

What quickness is anyone seeing?

His really low burst off the LOS is eye opening bad into his 3rd year... If Elam was on OL, he can't play tackle so he'd only be legitimate at guard. But now with Haynes, Meyers and the play of Stalling and Stenberg in relief...guard isn't an issue at UK.

Seems with his quickness he could be a serviceable tackle.

While I don't agree with him being blessed with alot of quickness, but lets suppose he is, he doesn't have the latteral quickness he would need to play at OL and he still doesn't play with a good pad level, pops up. So with that said, NG and DT would drive him backwards at G, plus being 6'7" he would be hard for a qb to see over, or around for that matter.

ME has got to learn to play the game lower and maintain some leverage regardless of which side of the ball he plays on. I think part of his issue is more than lack of fundamentals, the more I watch him I think its the lack of flexibility. He is a huge guy, but not very athletic. We have one who may be just like him, 6'7" 352 with 12% bodyfat. Looks the part for sure, but just doesn't block anyone.

One of the problems Elam has is standing up to straight. I think Coach Stoops will get that worked out. I think grumpyolddawg is exactly correct on him playing OL.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

Cheap shot.
Not a cheap shot.
This kid made a name in HS because he was much bigger than
anyone he played against & dominated. Weak schedule also.
He has to play up because he is so overweight he can't play in
a down position.
Don't know about his work habits but it appears to me he does
not put in enough work for it to pay off or he would be playing
a lot more. Either that's the case or he was way over rated
which I think is the case.
Not getting anything now & IMO I don't see much in the future.

This is spouted off a lot, but the actual truth is that football players rankings are based off of how they do in camps against regional and even national talent. Most of their ranking does not come from what they did on the football field on Friday in the fall. It comes from what they do over the summers. Elam went to several camps, including an Alabama camp, and he seemingly graded out quite well at that camp. He also attended the Army All American game, where he did quite well in practice from what I recall. So, he didn't just make a name for himself by playing undersized Kentucky talent.

That's partically true, according to Woody, they are rated on their pro potential as well, plus they do take into account their HS competition, he claims anyway. Nick Chubb dominated every camp he attended, was the strongest and fastest back there, yet he wasn't a 5* back and we have given Woody hell about it. But his reasoning was his HS competition wasn't very good, yet he played in the same region as Vonn Bell, played against the same teams, Bell went to tOSU and was a 5*

If he wants a shot at the next level I think he should move to tackle. He immediately stands up every single time and dances around

He's not playing oline. That's why he's at UK and not Bama'. If he was willing to play oline, he'd be at Bama'.

FWIW, Woody has posted that he was not impressed with Elam out of high school. RIvals rated him a 3-star player, but there was serious discussion about making him a 2-star.

The Elam at DT experiment should be over at this point if he is sensible about giving himself the best shot at succeeding at this level. He needs to switch over to the OL at either guard or tackle.
