Not top shelf but, Knob Creek right out of the freezer is 👍.

PS. It does occupy the top shelf in my freezer. 😉

Cheers 🥃

Ftr, I started with the st bernardus.

then Mrs aa decided she wanted to order Mexican instead of my delicious homemade chicken soup. So that sorta throws a wrench in things.

Resuŕrecting the old thread.

Tonight seems celebratory so let's make it special.

My wife's cousin called me the other day to see if I wanted a bottle of Van Winkle 10. Seems he entered two separate raffles for a bottle and won them both. Rather than flip one to someone who will flip it for a profit he called the one guy he knew who would drink it. Picking it up this afternoon in time for #77.
By the way I am still drinking Hawkeye tears and I am drunk. 77 in a row. 12 championships. Only 3 more to go and ALL of Gables records will be gone.

They could have never dreamed this 30 years ago.

I have been lurking on this site and the one before it for 10 years now. I got this idea in my head and decided to finally come out and share it with you all. If you want a guide on what to drink when a different PSU wrestler in on the mat, I’ve paired a whiskey with what I think the personality and style of that wrestler embodies. I have almost 300 bottles of bourbon in my house, so I hope I have given you some offerings that even if you don’t agree, you can still enjoy!

Luke Lilledahl – Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat Rickhouse Proof. Missouri’s premier distillery, Ben Holladay’s SRW is widely appreciated as the best offering from the Show Me State. However, beware the “neck pour” and I feel this only reaches its full potential once the level goes below the top of the label allowing time to oxidize. Lilledahl also has its moments where he just isn’t quite ready to demonstrate his full potential. The fact that he is from the Show Me state is just an extra bonus!

Marcus Blaze – William Larue Weller. This BTAC bottle is the best of Weller and is remarkable and highly coveted. Everyone wants a bottle, and just like the obsessed collector who seems to get every allocated bottle, we got him. He is everything that is advertised and we are lucky to have him.

Aaron Nagao – Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Store Pick. If you ever get a chance to get a bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked, don’t. It’s not worth the $200 price tag when a WR Double Oak Store Pick can be just as good if not better. Nagao has a ceiling of potential often created by his own stubbornness to just let things fly and his bad luck injury streak makes him a wrestler that might never have reached his true potential, but is still a very good wrestler.

Shayne Van Ness – 1792 Sweet Wheat. Shayne comes from NJ and I feel like 1792 is the most 1792 state there is. It’s kind of just there with a lot of different offerings, but the one that truly rises above is the Sweet Wheat. It comes in a classy bottle, which is what many people find attractive about 1792. SVN is one of the classiest wrestlers on the squad, and like SVN, Sweet Wheat is the perfect balance of smoothness and power.

PJ Duke – Jack Daniels Tanyard Hill Rye. This hazmat offering comes in a scorching hot 145.9 proof. It is absolutely delicious with strong notes of tobacco, leather, vanilla, and several stone fruits. But it is almost too hot to handle. It will brutalize an unprepared palate.

Mitchell Mesenbrink – Michter’s 20 year. Good luck finding a bottle of this unobtanium. Good luck finding someone with Mitchell’s pace and attacking mentality, as well. You might never see a Michter’s 20 in a store just like we may never see another Mitchell ever again. Like Mitchell’s scrawny chicken legs, Michter’s 20 is not perfect, but the positives more than outweigh its slight weaknesses.

Levi Haines – Blanton’s Gold Store Pick. Everyone knows Blanton’s. Not everyone can get their hands on a gold bottle. And even fewer get a Blanton’s Gold Store Pick. This bottle reminds you what bourbon should be, and Levi is all the qualities that PSU wrestling should be: technically perfect, humble yet flashy with spectacular moments of bonus points, and consistent. I toyed with the idea of picking Weller CYPB (Craft Your Perfect Bourbon) – which is a contender for my favourite bourbon of all time, because if I could craft a perfect PSU wrestler, on this squad it would look like Levi.

Rocco Welsh – Weller Special Reserve. Like Weller Special Reserve, it comes from the iconic Weller family, but doesn’t really stand out for anything spectacular. Still a highly coveted bottle and can be strangely abundant in Ohio, where Welsh started his collegiate career.

Josh Barr – EH Taylor Single Barrel. EH Taylor is about as good as it gets from the Buffalo Trace line. Most people can get the small batch, which is an amazing bottle, but the single barrel can be absolutely divine. In a different universe, Josh is a 4 timer, so we just need to appreciate just how lucky we are to have him on the squad. Some of our best wrestlers ever were 3 time champs, and I would probably pick them over our 4 time and 5 timers, if I were to be honest.

Cole Mirasola – Old Forester 1924. This 10 year from OF is about as good as it gets, but sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of some other older bourbons. This bourbon owes its roots to Early Times, and if it were just a little bit different, it would be King of Kentucky, which is up there with the absolute best bourbon out there, superior to the Van Winkle line. If Cole gains a little more muscle and can finish off his shots, he’s King of Kentucky status, but for right now, he’s just a really really really good bottle of 10 year old bourbon in 1924.

Some wonderful backups:

Nate Desmond – Oaklore Straight Rye. If you find this NC gem, you will be blown away by its quality and it seriously outperforms top notch Kentucky ryes. If Nate can get on the squad, he’s gonna knock off some very good wrestlers. Apparently in any weight class he wants, as well.

Braeden Davis – Wild Turkey 101 8 year. I don’t like Wild Turkey 101, but I love the **** out of the 8 year. “Scooter” is a little unpredictable both on the mat and off, and if he wasn’t our guy, I’d probably make fun of him all the time. But he’s ours, and it kind of works.

Masanosuke Ono – Yamazaki 12 Year Single Malt. Yes, I picked a Japanese whiskey for a Japanese wrestler. It stands out as the only non-bourbon on this list because Ono stands out for his lack of folkstyle experience on the collegiate D1 level. If you ever get a chance to try this whiskey, you’ll see how special it is!

Tyler Kasak – Green River 250th Army Edition. In about 20 years, Green River will be producing stuff that will be on allocated lists because they are doing some absolutely incredible things. This bourbon is shelf stable and punches so far above its price point. Truly a great bourbon and I have been quietly stocking up on these for the days that it is no longer available or that the secondary market wakes up to how good it really is.

Connor Mirasola – Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength rye. I had to keep Connor in the Old Forester family since Cole is OF 1924. OF SiBBS rye is very proofy, with a brilliant mint finish. Connor needs a little more time and he will be a NC contender in his own right.

By the way I am still drinking Hawkeye tears and I am drunk. 77 in a row. 12 championships. Only 3 more to go and ALL of Gables records will be gone.

They could have never dreamed this 30 years ago.
I don't know. They have been wailing inconsolably and babbling incoherently since April 17, 2009. I am pretty sure they knew.

While it is too early to hit the liquor cabinet, it is not too early to start thinking about it.

I plan to start in Scotland with a Balvenie 12 for the first half of the dual before hopping across the pond and south of the border with a Vago Mezcal Ensamble that the boy got me for Christmas. It is smoky like I imagine those Hawkeye tears are, but without the bitterness.

Tonight, I’ll likely be unable to follow along live as jr and his girlfriend are coming in for dinner. Mrs A is making Tuscan bean soup, with which we’ll open a simple bottle of primitivo (which is also the model name for my cyclocross bike). Later, I’ll likely catch up on all the fun, most likely with a bit of Yellow Spot. (Last night I had a bit of VDC Courage and Conviction after I got home from dc).

TOO EARLY!?
Me and you brother are a different class of citizens. Or I just may be an alcoholic, IDK, 😆

Im going straight Irish right now with some old fashioned Jamison. Found something new, mango Malibu rum. Tried a sip it was pretty good very sweet though, gonna try mixing it with some 7up. If I'm not satisfied by then it's gonna be good ole Miller high life.

Starting with Troegs Pennsylvania Lager, which is subtle and sublime, and then segueing (prolly not a word) to Milagro Reposado tequila, and ending with Fosforo Mezcal Ensamble. I like agave...

Apparently Jr. can't read a wrestling schedule. This match was circled as soon as the schedule hit the inter-web.
Yeah. The problem is this is Xmas. They were supposed to come over to that after the 25th but Mrs a got the flu.

I quit the alcohol thing. Mrs. Merkin does not follow the wrestling schedule. So I am on a plane to see Carmen in NYC. Followed by prom dress shopping for our daughter. Something about making our kids cultured. Last time I stayed at the Hilton Midtown they had a really good premade Old Fashioned. I will probably just walk buy and look at it fondly. Ear bud in listening to Iron Head like kids do now.
