Yeah, many of those folks just want to be heard. As you said, their entire persona...if not their raison d'être...is wrapped up in their presence and participation in the boards.
Most of what I've read is described by your first bullet point...mental gymnastics is a great description of it. So are grasping at straws, denial, projection, casting aspersions on other people and programs...it really is entertaining.
