Louisville Gets One-Year Ban From Postseason Play
September 23, 1998| From Staff and Wire Reports

The NCAA banned the Louisville men's basketball team from postseason play for a year Tuesday and put the school on three years' probation because of rule violations.

The two violations in the men's basketball and seven in women's volleyball programs involved extra benefits, recruiting, financial aid, institutional control and ethical conduct.

The Division I Committee on Infractions handed down other penalties as well, among them a reduction of scholarships in both sports.

The basketball program's postseason ban also will include this season's Conference USA tournament.

"We had nearly 100% agreement with the NCAA enforcement staff on all facts of the case," said John Shumaker, university president. "The NCAA's response has been tough but the sanctions are fair and I respect their conclusions."

The allegations came to light early last year and, after an investigation that produced hundreds of pages of testimony, the NCAA in April issued a formal letter of inquiry into both programs.

The university acknowledged seven of the volleyball infractions involving recruiting violations and rules prohibiting extra benefits for athletes or their families. It disagreed with the two other allegations, that it did not sufficiently educate volleyball Coach Leonid Yelin about NCAA rules and that then-assistant basketball coach Scooter McCray obtained a discounted hotel rate for the father of forward Nate Johnson.

Louisville was put on probation for two years in 1996 after an investigation unearthed questions about former basketball player Samaki Walker's use of two cars in 1995.

Because the new violation involving the basketball program occurred within five years of the starting date of the previous penalties, the committee applied its repeat-violator provisions to the case.

"Certainly, I'm deeply disappointed and saddened by the decision," Coach Denny Crum said in a statement. "Regardless of the outcome of the decision, I am ultimately responsible for our basketball program and I feel bad that it has had such a negative effect on our program and this university."

Is there a ligament argument here or is there not?

I would say you could muscle your way into a ligament argument, but it would take a joint effort and would result in a bare bones case. The fiber of your case would hinge on being able to connect the dots that associate your child with the arms and legs of the university body. You would need to be flexible and compliant, yet sturdy and strong.

As far as compensation goes, you could put a sprain on them, but I doubt you would break them. I hope this was housebroken and answers your quests.

It doesn't matter anyway as they'll be back in freedom hall as dtown lville turns into Detroit with humana closing up shop and the Yum going under

You need to separate U of L from Louisville. I live in Louisville and it's a great town and beats the hell out of Lexington as a city to live in and travel to. Also there are at least 6000 or so UK fans and alumni that work for Humana in Louisville like I do. We aren't losing our jobs and Humana isn't going anywhere after the acquisition and if it was this would be about the least funny statement on Earth to me. Our state has enough blight out in Eastern KY we don't need the flagship city and the vast majority of the tax base to have problems because the largest corporation in KY leaves town. Your comment let's me know you don't understand life, get a clue.

They will go after a young and up and comer someone from a school some place like a witch a state if he were to leave that would be a huge get for them. Or they may go the route of someone at a program that sucks with a good coach

A basketball player from IU, UNC, & UofL walk into a bar. The bartender yells we don't allow minors so the IU player leaves, the UNC player proudly proclaims he is a major in AFAM and sits down, and the UofL players asks the bartender "well exactly how old are the whores in this establishment?"

Pitino might get whacked, if for no other reason, than to save Jurich. The football program is winning, women's basketball and volleyball is winning, baseball is winning...none of those programs hired hookers (that we know about). They're getting ready to expand Papa John's. Fire Pitino and U of L can say "we got rid of the man who was in charge of all that" while keeping their most prized commodity.

The football team (is 2-3 and) invited Devonte Fields with pending assault case against his girlfriend to transfer into the cozy, misogynistic zeitgeist promulgated by Jurich. Jurich hired & re-contracted two sexually deviant coaches after well-publicized issues plus he had lost an anti-discriminatory case of his own.

To me, Jurich is the issue. He thumbed his nose at ethics, coach selection, and allowed/blessed a never-ending conga line of misfit toys and criminals to transfer into his programs all knowing he could shape and merchandise the stories by the local sycophantic, ***** press core he muscled.

UofL 2nd chance scumbags:

Jonta Woodard
Devonte Fields
Rod Council
Willie Williams
Montrell Jones
Michael Dyer
Zeke Pike
Chris Jones

They only pulled the offer from the cousin-rapist recruit when they knew the press couldn't sell that one to the public.

Pitino is just a zit on the stinky *** of the problem.

The IU fan looks at the bartender and says: "Give me a Boilermaker I am tired of candy stripes."
The UNC fan says: "Give me a Blue Devil cocktail, then I can at least seem like I have an education."
The Louisville fan says: I will take the IU fan and the UNC fan because they have both whored themselves out to another team."

.....The UNCheat fan is asked to leave when he presents a fake id but continues to argue that it is real even though the picture and name under it is Michelle Jordan (they can't read).
The IUsed to be fan is asked to leave when they get violent, start cursing and throwing chairs because someone from the house band asked them to quit sending them drinks with candy canes in them and requesting songs from 1987.
Finally, the Luridville fan had the police called on them when they tried to recruit men out to their Ford Escort by promising a 2 dollar lap dance and an up close view of his balls that have been signed by Rick Pitino.
They are arrested and sentenced to life at the ***** Island correctional facility.

A IU, UNC, & Louisville basketball player all walk into a bar crying. The bartender tells them to cheer up and to make them feel better the player with the biggest sob story gets to drink for free. They all 3 perk up.

The IU player says well my coach wants to kiss me on the lips during Sr night festivities.

The UNC player says that is nothing that his coach says he has to start going to a real class

The Louisville player then says his coach expects him to marry a ***** he knocked up.

The bartender tells the Louisville player that the only right thing to do is marry a lady if you knock them up.

The player says I agree but Coach Pitino is already married.

Very well stated and I agree with you. BUT....Jurich has made a lot of people a lot of money. They can find another men's basketball coach. And he'll have no problem recruiting once the sanctions are over. They'll get a guy like the guy at Wichita and be right back in business. Replacing Jurich, on the other hand, (and I'm speaking in terms of performance from all the programs, not morals) is a much tougher deal. They're already worried he's going to Texas.

They can stop worrying. I seriously doubt Texas would have him!!

you're the clueless one. you don't seem to appreciate mega entertainment when you see it, but i bet you've had plenty of laughs at the expense of the "blight" that is eastern ky. many consider the city of louisville to be it's own brand of blight. if you think louisville beats the hell out of lexington then that's on you, but ul and louisville will remain the butt of many jokes for a long time. we're all just having a good time here. we don't need some condescending asshat preaching to us and trying to be a wet blanket. that's life---you need to understand.

Add an NC State fan and a gun.

The four of them are sitting at the bar commiserating. The Indiana fan says "God I miss Bobby Knight" and shoots himself. The Louisville fan says "God I miss Denny Crum" and shoots himself as well. The North Carolina fan says "God I miss my fake classes"....and shoots the NC State fan.

Rick Pitino makes his entrance into a Louisville basketball practice and notices all his players doing something he hasn't seen in years. Immediately he figures it out, turns to his assistant and says "No! I said work on their HOOKER shots!"
