I had some friends over Sunday evening for a cookout. Three of the four are die-hard UL fans and the fourth is kind of a fan (he did his post-grad work there) but not hardcore. All are convinced there's no chance Pitino leaves or gets punished. One admitted that its just as bad if he didn't know this was going on for four years as it would be if he did know. Another said this happens at every single school and further went on to say that hookers being paid to have sex with players/recruits is no worse than said players/recruits having sex with college students for free.
Funny thing is that we have a neighbor that we are quite fond of that said almost identical things in a different conversation about a month ago about the situation. Do UL fans have a guide book they use to try and argue why Pitino is innocent and UL deserves no further punishment?
One shameful thing, among many, that has resulted from this entire scandal is the way Louisville fans, who might otherwise be perfectly decent people with a fairly respectable moral compass, have been forced to take stands and articulate opinions which are completely inconsistent with the rest of their decisions and stands.
I suppose it's a difficult thing, when it comes to the team you support, to always take rational positions and consistent moral positions when it means you basically have to speak against your coach or your team and program. Personally, I remember having to admit that UK screwed up big time in the late 80s, which resulted in those severe sanctions. But I did it. I would hope that I'd have the moral fortitude to do the same today if something similar happened.
But the bottom line is that these UofL fans are grasping at straws and turning their own morals on their heads in order to justify continuing to support what has happened in that program under Pitino. Pitino himself has proven to be a very unsavory character, to put it mildly, and these events using hookers to recruit are indefensible for anyone who can see straight. Anyone who could say anything other than "what has happened here is horrific and should never have happened. Rick needs to go, house needs to be cleaned, and we deserve whatever the NCAA decides to do" has compromised his integrity completely.
