My wife is the same way, but from Missouri. There are plenty of small towns there that have high schools with ~150 students.

The majority of our towns do not have schools named after them any more, just counties. People associate where you live with the high school sports team.

When I was in 7th grade(1980) it was required that you take Kentucky History. We had to memorize all 120 counties and place them on a map.

I had to learn all 120 like you. You are the only person besides myself I have ever heard say this. Guess what, it has come in handy as I work in the investment business and we underwrite muni bonds for the whole state.

born in Mason
Then: Bracken, Kenton, Owen, Madison, Fayette, Bourbon, Fayette (again), Boone, Kenton (again)

Kentuckians identify themselves by county (unless you are from a metro area like Louisville, Lexington, NKY) as there are so many small towns across the state, no one can know where they all are. Counties consolidate that a little bit.

I dont know how it is in Lexington or Louisville, but in metro NKY/Cincy, after introducing someone, the next question is "what high school did you go to?"

Can speak only from my own experience. In Daviess County no one cared. I went to DCHS but through church I had more friends at Apollo and Owensboro.

In the many years I lived in Lexington I really don't remember anyone caring about schools. Note that I was out of high school and didn't go to thigh school in Lexington.

In Louisville, that matters a TON. I had a boss that went to St X. He would literally throw away any application that listed Trinity for education. This was a grown *** man.

Having lived here in Lexington my entire life, one thing I've learned is the only Kentuckians who don't respond to "So where you from" with "I'm from _____ County" are those of us from Lexington and Louisville.
Jesus Christ, I was literally about to say the exact same thing. I have never once told anyone I was from Fayette County (life resident as well)

I did live outside of New Circle Road for 12 years, but now live next to the Arboretum
We do it because if we told you the little town we lived in you probably wouldn't know where it's at anyway. I mean would you seriously know where Evarts, Kings Mountain, Marrowbone, Albany, Science Hill or Pine Knot is at if anyone told you that's where they lived?

Whenever I see that name, I automatically associate it with Buford Pusser. I am assuming you are in the McNairy County located in Tennessee? Heck, that might be the only McNairy County in the country.

BTW, I am in Owsley County. That means there are only 4.441 other people besides me living here! The entire population of my county wouldn't qualify as a small town in most places, but I like it here, largely because it has such a small population.

Curious, how did the former parkways in western KY wind up becoming interstates: I-165/I-169/I-69? I just started noticing those designations in the last couple of years. Are the roads upgraded? Thanks.
