Gonna stop you right at "rap blowing up in the 80s". Rap might have gotten it's footing in the 80's, but it was pure **** back then, and I think any rap fan would agree, 90s rap was SO much better, that really.. you could consider the 90s as the REAL starting point for Rap music. 80's seems to be the most diverse genre up until that point, I'll give it that.. but it doesn't mean ALL the genres were good.

Actually, Rap got it's footing in the late-70s via Sugarhill Gang. Believe it or not, I memorized the lyrics to this piece back in the day.

I was actually going to say how it originated in the 70s.. started to gain traction in the 80s... but it was the 90s where Rap really took off, and certainly a better decade than the previous two.

I didn't say it was at its best. Just meant that it blew up in popularity. It was almost nonexistent and then became huge almost overnight. There's plenty of great rap songs from that decade. A lot of it was ground breaking.

You had a punk band turned rap group in the Beastie Boys. You had rock and rap collaborations that got rap played on rock stations (Walk This Way). You had the birth of gangsta rap with groups like NWA. Sure some of it sounds kind of cheesy now but it was great back then and laid the foundation for what we have now.

I actually got in the mood to listen to it after this discussion and played a bunch of songs.

2010s. Economy went from ok to gangbusters. The last decade before technology became so intrusive that it creates misery and no one can have fun without worrying what it will look like if broadcast to the world. Chicks were hot and frisky. The music was blah but not terrible.

All in all, probably the last decade where it will be a joy to live until we do something about social media, etc.

Honestly might have been the peak of civilization as we know it.

Not defined by any particular standard but as you answer include your age . That lets us know how many decades you have actually witnessed . I'm not sure several decades seem great to me but had their issues . I'll say this I'm no fan on the 2010 decade to today . Society is just so damn ugly . I'll say 80's , economy Was firm , no big wars , people had fun and seemed to respect others more than now .
I'm 58 (soon), easily the 80's.

Led Zeppelin. Cased closed.

but also……. Black Sabbath, KISS, Alice Cooper, Boston, Peter Frampton. ABBA.

I was born in 1965 so I remember the 1970s quite well. Not a bad decade but the 80s absolutely rocked!!!!
Just saw Alice in concert a few months ago. Had a great time.

What? 80s included good music. Perhaps not 70s caliber, but nevertheless..

AC/DC, Def Leppard, Guns n Roses, Journey, Foreigner, U2, Bon Jovi, INXS, Duran Duran, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Police, Joan Jett, Rolling Stones, Clash, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest, Slade, Motley Crue, Billy Idol.

List goes on and on.

Crank up my fave from the decade and let me know what you think. I'm talking hard core jams while blasting down the highway.

You left out Hank Jr, Van Halen, Queen

Now is the best because I have some $ in the bank, UK football is somehow good, and I’ve got kids and a wife to come home to.

Since time isn’t real, I’d say the ten years between ‘85 and ‘95 were pretty top notch for ol’ funk. Sports, music, gals, freedom, figuring out myself a little bit. All good stuff. Also got central air conditioning in about ‘85.

Early rap was not bad, by the way

Say the 80’s when it comes to not having many cares in the world but was dirt poor so have to go with the 2010-2020’s. Career took off, started my family, etc.

Now is the best. People want to think it was better at a certain time but if you went back I guarantee you’d miss every advance that we’ve made.
Would disagree. Happiness is down. Might be hard to go without the smartphone and social media, but the world would improve drastically without them.

You say so. I bet after a day you’d want to be back. Have you stopped using smartphones despite the fact that it makes you sad? If it would make such a drastic improvement why haven’t you if not?

And I can be accused of a cranky old " get off my lawn " man at age 55 but this current culture sucks .. Brawls at Disney land , Brawls everywhere , school shootings , political candidates being attacked , politicians openly urging their supporters to disrupt their opponents . just an overall level of nastiness that has permeated our culture .

Everyone always laments on "the current generation" like it's the current generation's fault. The kids didn't have a group meeting and decide that everyone gets a trophy, it was the parents. Kids don't get together and greenlight the idea that they should be neglected, it was the parents. Kids aren't born school shooters, it was the parents. Kids didn't invent social media, it was the parents. So where does the fault lie?

I disagree somewhat, of course parents bear some responsibility, but so does the individual. I keep seeing stuff from young people like “well if my parents would’ve just pushed me more I would’ve made better grades” “Oh my parents gave me a bad relationship with food” “oh my parents coddled me too much and that’s why I’m blah blah blah”

I mean not everything you are and ever will be is due to parenting 100% Not every bad action or habit you have is your parents fault. At the end of the day the parent can guide but it’s ultimately up to you who you’re going to be. Too much pressure and blame on parenting imo

80s for me. Turned 13 in 1980. MTV was a game changer back then. High school in the 80s was a really good time. Eddie Murphy became a legend.

Lethal Weapon
Platoon
The Road Warrior
Rambo First Blood
Conan the Barbarian
Miami Vice (TV version)

Arnold and Stallone trying to one up each other and many other movies I've forgotten

Hank jr
Van Halen
Def Leppard
Motley Crew
Guns n Roses

Born in 1980.

Favorite decade: 1990s. Economy was humming by 93-94, music was great for what I was into - rock/metal/grunge and gangsta rap and even some massively popular country. Political correctness was just beginning and a lot of the TV and movies were a little edgier than today. This decade began without the internet and ended with broadband. That was quite an adjustment for society but our generation picked it up a lot quicker than our parents. Started the 90s as a kid and it ended with me being an adult. There is a clear nostalgia bias here.

I loved the 80s too, but I was a kid, so my opinions on what was good probably are ****. The 2000s is when I did all the big things (graduate college, get a "real" job, get married, buy first house, buy first car, etc.). The world's been kicking me in the teeth ever since. Social media and tik tok culture has accelerated the dumbing down of society to the point I'm surprised some people can dress themselves.

I'd rank the decades I've lived in:
1990s
1980s

2000s

2010s
2020s

I suppose it depends on when you were born. I have been alive in the decades of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. Nine decades.

Hands down I would pick the 1950's. Strong families, excellent public schools, a quality standard of living and love of country after having been through WWII. TV was invented, classic movies were made and music gave birth to Rock N' Roll and the best country music in history. Streets were safe, people were considerate and school teachers were respected as were police.

UK was great in football and basketball. So that is a bonus

Of course this is my opinion only and the 50's were my formative years after being born during WWII. So I am biased but I lived it and would love to live it again. I guess I will have to wait until I get to heaven to experience such quality time.

I guess from the outside, the 50's seems nice. I've always seen that decade as more fake than anything. A Pleasantville that never really existed. Maybe tiny pockets of society were like Leave It to Beaver, but that was just a Hollywood production. Everyone was wound up so tight, it was controversial if Elvis shimmied his hips, women having strong opinions, and a couple on television laying in the same bed together.

Music and some movies are all I've got for the 60's. Vietnam, assassinations, blatant racism in front of the world's eyes by "normal" people and politicians with power, the rise of Nixon which eventually leads to his downfall, and the illusion of the American dream and innocence shattered as the nation slowly realizes we may be our own worst enemy.

I would give up every phone, tablet and computer I have forever just to see my kids walk out the door at 8am and not return until dinner and as a parent never have to worry about them. With all the advancements we have made in technology it's also developed us into a scared and very dependent society which is why I would never consider this a great era.

Technology isn’t making you scared. It’s what you choose to consume while using the technology that is making you scared. Best decade.

Yah, was born in 83.

so love the 90s, it’s the gen x and old millennials decade.

cable exploded by the time we were in the 90s and pop culture was huge …due to mtv, Nickelodeon, etc. which connected all of us culturally. movies were better than the cheesy action or campy horror (which I love both) from the 80s. Music was more diverse and easier to find but all still had its own geographical influence and sound. Ex: east coast rap sound vs west, Seattle grunge, etc
Capitalism was strong and things were marketed as never before.

Also: Jordan, Griffey, the start of Tiger woods
plus wrasslin
