besides weight training and conditioning? Are they allowed any contact with coaches for studying plays or film. Can they practice techniques and plays together without coaches and do coaches want them to do this. Can't wait for next season to start.

The skill guys do quite a bit on their own, I guess you could call it a 7 on 7 deal with qbs, wrs, tes dbs and lbs. Kind of tough for linemen to get much work in other than technique work but I am sure that goes on too.

I was gonna say smoke weed...I believe many would be surprised at how many do on ALL teams.

Ain't that the truth. I am not a young guy, never smoked weed or anything else. But so many of these kids on your team, my team and every other team come from a background where smoking weed is an acceptable behavior, so schools that are strict on that particular offense like UK and UGA are fighting years of conditioning. It's legal is a couple of states and that number will likely grow if those states see a gain in revenue from taxes on it.

A few years ago I was able to attend a small luncheon with 12 other people, Mitch Barnhart, and Mike Pratt. They fielded a bunch of questions and explained a lot of the inner workings of how the athletic department worked. Someone asked Mitch what is the one thing he would change and he said he would like to see the SEC use a universal rule book like the NFL. He said drug violations, domestic disputes, arrests, etc. were handled differently depending on the university. Mitch stated that the year we played Florida with Tebow they had some crazy number like 22 players with a misdemeanor on the field. Schools like UK, UGA, and Vandy have pretty strict drug, alcohol, and arrest policies but Fla and Aub let their kids run around with no repercussions.

LSU is pretty lax too, Honey Badger failed 10 drug test and never missed a snap. We had 2 arrested last week for BBguns on campus, they weren't running around campus but in their rooms shooting cups supposely. Maintance man saw dents on the fridge, called his supervisor who inturn call campus police who went in, found the bb guns on their desk and some pot residue in a bag. They were arrested and charged with a felony. It will very likely be reduced and they shouldn't have had them, but that seems like a little overzealous police work.

Good friend of mine played golf at Florida during the Tebow years and he said the football team literally did whatever they wanted. Shockingly, he said Hernandez was always in trouble when out on the town but the local police would never do anything about it.

Don't forget UT, under Fulmer nobody would be dismissed until he failed his FOURTH piss test. Now I think it's nobody's dismissed until his fourth rape charge.

The skill players need to be running skeletons and the linemen need to be in the weight room, but if the culture continues where a great many of the players go home and spend as much time away from campus as possible, they will be playing for a new coach either next year or the year after.

The players work on their own, but they are also given a summer workout plan the coaches want them to follow.

Wasn't the rule changed not long ago that allows players to work with coaches for a certain amount of time in the off season? Regardless, players need to be working on conditioning and doing extensive film study. QBs/WRs should be working on route running, timing, and becoming familiar with each other. Games can be won/lost this time of year.

i dont think they can coach them on the field but they can film the workouts and give feedback. the strength and conditioning coaches can work with them for 20 hrs/week i believe. the biggest difference i see with this group and the last several years is that we have 60 or so guys that are gonna work all summer and in the past it seemed we had 20 or 30.

The number of players that spend the summer in Lexington will be a big indicator of their commitment to get this program over the hump and to a bowl.

Don't know the time allowed , but starting last year the fb payers are now allowed to meet with coaches for inividual instruction time...been that way in bb for sometime...know the B is in charge of organizationing workouts to work on running routes and other things for timing purposes..

They take classes, to stay on course, and workout alot. Yes, the rule was changed to allow individual instruction from position coach, not sure how many hrs per week is allowed.

As always, the strength and conditioning coach will have them working most days and the GA's can spend unlimited time.

When people start bashing student athletes, most don't understand the schedule these guys have. Everyone will be there this summer, taking classes, working out, attending meetings, watching film.

Alot of time spent away from home and family.

The S&C coaches will oversee the players having "voluntary" 7-on-7 pick-up games. They'll all be on campus for the 6 week summer semester. Any of them who need, or just want, more academic work will also be on campus for the 4 week summer session in May.

They workout a lot, do individual workouts and drills, take classes, and probably go home a couple times.

I remember when the UKAA published the fact the football team had 30+ players on the SEC academic team. Our football record: 1-10. Somehow we were supposed to feel good about the academic accomplishment. Meanwhile, Auburn, Alabama. Ole Miss. MSU (under Jackie Sherrill), UT, UGA, Florida et al paid no attention to the rules and lived to drive UK and Vandy into the SEC trash heap. Football paid the athletic department teams and none of the big boys of the SEC were going to relinquish anything that prevented them to be successful. Add UofL and their athletic anything goes mantra and this board of detractors can bellyache and go negative all they want. UK has a mighty tall mountain to climb to compete in the SEC.
