What do you consider real UK fans?

Fans that are way too optimistic, or fans that are always negative? What say you?

I mean at the end of the day one isn't more fan than the other, but I prefer to be a realist rather than pessimist or optimist. When you're talking about Kentucky football it probably seems like a lot of the realists are "pessimists" because things have been so terrible, but they're just telling it like it is. Being a realist is the only way this program is going to move forward. Burying our heads in the sand doesn't do anything productive.

I am a real fan! Do I get pi$$ed about what is happening, you bet I do, but I'm too damn old to give up. I still think UK can build a team that can be competitive with anyone. If you can dream it, you can do it.
We need a staff who can motivate, and develop the players. Is Coach Stoops that person, I don't know, but at this time it appears he isn't. There are other good coaches out there besides Petrino, Saban, Meyer, etc. We just have to find that young coach who can do it, and their out there. It's obvious we have, and will kiss a few toads before we find the prince,. but we can't give up.
Winners never quit, and quiters never win, and I know Kentuckians don't give up.

The real fans are the ones who are negative but still watch every pitiful Saturday expecting something not short of a miracle. Count me in that group.

Real fans are the ones that celebrate and praise when the team does good. But they also call out the team when they suck or disappoint. The worst type of fans are the ones that pump and say they will be happy with the system we have in place regardless of how the program is headed.

Being a fan, in simple terms, means that you are passionate about your team, your school, and the events they participate in. Fans identify with their team/school and want it to succeed and enjoy seeing it being recognized for positive things. Our individual personalities can strongly influence how we each approach fandom, i.e. the negative, expect to lose, the overly optimistic, head in the sand to the glaring problems.
These differences in personal fandom are what creates tension on a public forum like catsillustrated.

i know it sucks when some "fans" try to take up for Stoops by bashing other fans. I think some people are stoops fans over being Kentucky fans. He is ranked in the top half of every coaches on the hot seat list, he barely beat EKU last year, 1-8 in our last 9 games, got embarrassed by a coordinator he fired, and i can name more. I love uk sports, always have and always will. As a fan, watching my team get called the states biggest junior college pisses me off. Being the third best team in the state pisses me off. Wish Mitch would change the culture and the facilities are a big step. Now he needs to get us a dang coach to win some ball games!

Until recently, I would consider "real fans" as the ones that buy their tickets and go to games regardless (at least until age or infirmities prevent them from doing so). And, naturally, this criteria applies "only" to those fans that are within reasonable travel distance to Lexington. UK has a long history of great fan support despite very mediocre football. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I'm not saying it is wrong but "be good or I'm gone" seems to be current crowd dynamic.

FWIW, I attended many UK games in the 70s and 80s as a guest of my late father-in-law. We walked out of CWS (and Stoll Field) numerous times with him muttering "Dame Cats, should have won that one". But we were there next week. I have had UofL season tickets since I moved back to town in 1971. I've seen a lot of bad football. I've cut down on my UK visits in recent years because it seems like my availability is usually for night games and I no longer care to drive back home after a 7:30 game start. I was at the 7 OT game with AR and I believe when we got back home we went to breakfast! [laughing]

Peace

A fan is a fan. There are levels of fandom and there are fair weather fans but, negative fans are not fair weather fans as some would have you believe. Fair weather fans start rooting for other teams that are winning. Negative or disgruntled fans are ones who really care about the team but are tired of the same old result, losing.

I agree with this.

Fan who is looking out for the program and holds no favoritism towards the coaching staff or individual players. The program is much bigger than any coach or player.
I think many on here root for the coach instead.

A real fan is someone that will support the young men and women that make up the UK teams regardless of win/losses. They will show their displeasure with the teams. Except when the smoke clears they will still be there watching, cheering and supporting the teams.

Anybody who still even FOLLOWS UK football after all these horrible years is a real fan...

It would be SO easy to just quit paying attention or start rooting for a winner, but we just keep coming back.

I believe that true UK fans should cheer for all sports football, basketball, cheerleading all way to the damn cornhole team. I hate talking to UK basketball fans that cheer for other football programs like UT, Ohio state etc. those are the worst.
UK is only team I cheer for. I have to admit sometimes I watch games to cheer against the other team. Louisville FSU I wll be watching. I apologize but I can't get into going to Rupp to watch a cheerleading competition, not even if it is the national finals.

I'd say a real fan has been both overly optimistic and extremely negative at times with both football and basketball. I know I have.

The so called UK football fan is basically someone with real basketball knowledge but little in the way a football program operates.

They look for quick fixes and lave little expectations but to win six games and go to some bowl. They consider that a successful season.

They are what my daddy used to call them Chicken Little Fans. When you do well the typical UK fan sees A SEC championship but when things go bad, The Sky is Falling.

And of course, their are a lot of Chicken Little Fans after a 0-2 start.

I was here watching Bradshaw's "thin thirty",I'm still here watching whatever this is that Stoops is doing, pretty sure that makes me a fan.Someone is sure to tell me I'm not and have a very good set of reasons to explain why I'm not,but in the meantime I'll just go on hanging with the Cats

You cannot deem someone a fan or not by how positive or negative they are. People call me a non fan when I'm pissed over a loss and complaining about the mistakes, how does that make sense? If I wasn't a fan I wouldn't give a damn how bad they are. It's just a difference in personality. Not fandom.

So long as you stick with your team through thick and thin, you are a true fan.

I try to be even keel but it's hard for fans to do.

I strive to be a realist and objective, but again, sometimes that is difficult.

Yeah I understand that. I'm not going to watch or even watch it on TV, but it's associated with U.K. So I will still be proud of what they accomplished.

Would you say those that downgrade the present staff, who discourage commitments from happening? Or those who encourage commitments that things will be brighter?

It is UK football game day. No matter what happened last week, the week before, or the season before: Listening for a fight and a victory. If neither comes, I'll be back next week. ( yes I know that failing and doing the same thing expecting different results is stupid.) What? I am a UK football fan and I will remain.
