What does OU do well?

They run well and their qb is hard to bring down. I think we can score on them, but they can score as well. I don't expect a low scoring game at all.
Mayfield and Howard are of equal skill level. Decision making from the position is in our favor
Running the ball is easily OK's strong point.

This may be a first, but I agree with you on this. :wink:
Also, if our Linebacker play is at the top of their game we will come out on top, I believe.
I think we will have a plan for both.
Perrine: our DLine is better this year so those runs where he is 5 yds into our backfield before getting touched is over and I think Mr Joseph wants a little payback.
Striker: Wellman will be essentially shadowing him nearly every play. He can more than negate his presence.
I think the quick box score can be misleading. It's also a little early to tell if OUr defense is good or bad.
After giving up a quick 17-0 lead to Tennessee by the 2nd quarter, OUr defense buckled down and held Tennessee to 82 total yards the rest of the game. That's 82 yards for more than a half of play, 12 drives, or an average of 6.8 yards per drive. OUr defense was actually the star of that game.
Against Tulsa, the defense looked porous like past years though. Some believe this was inevitable considering the new coaching staff at Tulsa (Baylor disciples).
But if you look at the drives in that game, the OU defense once again did OK in the 2nd half. We gave up 14 points and 123 yards in 82 seconds to end the first half.
In fact, only 3 of their scoring drives were long sustained drives (11, 9 and 10 plays respectively).
Their other 2 TD drives were a Hail Mary (1-play) and a 4-play hurry-up drive in what most would call junk time with OU up 52-31 and 4 minutes left in the game.
So I'd say the jury is still out on the defense. We might still be susceptible to the long-range passing attack, but it seems, so far, like we're OK in most other facets of the game.
I think OUr game this weekend will really tell which defense we have.

We have 2 weeks to prepare, you don't LOL. Seriously, I expect a great game. I believe it will be a scoring shootout and the team with the last most possesions wins. Regardless of the outcome, will you guys please beat the dogs$&t out of the Horns. Try to win by 40.
I expected a very competitive game. Both teams will learn a lot about themselves Saturday. Looking for a 5 point game that will keep both Sooner and Mountaineer fans alike sitting on the edge of their seats right up until the end. What could be better than that? Enjoy!

Should be a pretty tight game. I think OU getting you guys in Norman is the difference here. If OU was going to Morgantown, then I think OU would be in trouble.
It's been a long time since OU played a decent WVU team - fiesta bowl. Actually, WVU has been really, really bad since that fiesta bowl... yet, the games have been close.
This year WVU is balanced and plays defense. OU ought to be worried IMO.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm definitely concerned about this game. I guess WVU has ended up being better than I expected since I really chalked this game up as a win coming into the season. So either WVU is better than expected, or I really just didn't pay attention to what WVU had coming back. But no doubt WVU has a damn solid team this year.
I'm really impressed with you WV guys breakdown of the game. As a sooner fan this game scares me to death. Two really good evenly matched teams. I'm afraid Mike Stoops comes up with a gameplan that allows a few ncaa records. I think turnovers and special teams decide it. Maybe Ross or Shepard has some magic to pull out a sooner win in Norman.
Thinking the under hits in this one. Our D is our strong suit, offensively we have been good but our competition clearly inferior, this isn't the Geno Smith air raid offense with no defense to back it up, and if the OU claims that their D is pretty good are of substance my guess is this total score falls in the 40s.
Tulsa has some great receivers. We'll see how good as they host Houston this week. Check this guy out against our best CB.............

If WV throws often, it neutralizes Striker as he moves to the nickel defense. When Striker plays straight up, he can effect an offense. I haven't followed WV much but I have read the defense is much improved over the past few years. OU QB Mayfield is a gamer and a gunslinger. He's shown he can make things happen. I see a good game and give the W to OU based strictly on home field advantage. I placed a prediction on the OU board of 37-35 OU.

Their fans are known to be some of the most respectful and hospitable in all of college football - so they do that well

I used to say the Lake Sumter Community College River Rats (in Leesburg, Florida). In the old Rivals Message Boards, it seemed like if you said anything critical of any team (even if just objective observation), all responders would just try to crap on your team. Who can crap on LSCC River Rats when they know nothing about them (or if they even exist). So, I did that just to ensure that most responses to my comments would be based on my comment instead of just trashing any team I'm loyal to.
However, my statement above is what I have perceived from everyone except Texas fans - Oklahoma and Nebraska fans have an uncanny reputation for being civil to opposing fans
I agree...hope for a reverse score, but agree with your analysis. We have a tendency to get over excited as WVU fans. Then get pissed when we get beat. We will find out if we are paper tigers in a few days. I truly expect a shootout.
It's that time of year! The OU-WVU match up is becoming one of my favorite B12 games. I really like playing WVU, talking with the fans this week and I know this will be an incredibly exciting game. As someone pointed out earlier, we'll learn a lot about both of our teams this weekend.
Quite frankly, OU has not played and may not play anyone with as stout a defense as the Mountaineers this season. Maybe KSU might have a say in whose D is the best in the B12, but based on what I saw last year and what I'm reading about the WVU D this year is that this is one tough, solid unit.
I've not compared 2014 to 2015 stats, but seems like we're not rushing the ball as much as we did last year. Of course much of that has to do with our change in offensive philosophy from a zone-read offense last year to more of an "air raid" style of play. We do mix in a few QB runs, but most has been a pocket style or rollout passing game to provide more balance than what we were doing last year.
Both offenses seem capable of scoring quickly and also sustaining long drives, but I'm thinking this one comes down to whose D can make more stops and create a couple of turnovers will decide the winner. My guess is OU 34, WVU 28.

I think we're not running the ball as much because our OL has not jelled, is inexperienced, and, not to put too fine a point on it, sucks at run blocking. Or has so far this year.
I wonder if Coach BB has been able to improve things during the two-week layoff. If not, this could be a long afternoon for the Sooners ... assuming that everything we've been hearing about the Mountaineer defense is accurate.

Yes.............Tennessee would have won if they hadn't lost and OK would have lost if they hadn't won. That's the way the world goes round. Sometimes you up.............sometimes you down. 1/2" of water...........think you gonna drown.
OU has a young corner who is really good. When he plays, we can put two guys on an island and let the rest of the dfense really get after you. Unfortunately, he has been suspended twice in three games.
The first was for thr first quarter in the opener. The second was for the whole Tulsa game. He did not screw up until Friday before Tulsa. So his replacement, a true freshman, played his on an island role, and succeeded about as well as the old .. I played a doctor on tv.. would do with your gall bladder surgery. I do not think anybody has heard whether Jordan Thomas will play against WVU or not. We are a different team with him, especially against spread it out offenses. And if he does not, at least the staff should know and have a game plan that fits whoever will be out there.
If his did his penance sufficiently, OU will be very solid on defense. Deepest defense in seven years at least. Two really to DLs who can be disruptive. Best linebcker set in a long time. But it is a great defense, potentially if Thomas is out there with Sanchez who is close to great college corner.
We have a safety who is perfect to cover a slot rec, Stephen Parker. My guess is that if the Thomas bridge is burned beyond recognition, then Parker might end up at corner, which makes us less effective in two places. We also have a soph safety named Thomas but he aint the corner.

From an Oklahoma fan, we don't have a corner who is really good, that is a false statement. We have a guy who " could " be good but at this point in his career he is average at best. Sanchez is probably our best guy but has struggled mightily at times. This game will be won in the trenches, bottom line. If you can establish a run game and can wear wvu down with a dose of perine/mix on ou will win IMO. If neither go for over 100 wvu will win
You have a good eye for talent. The last NFL projection had him going as the #5 wide out in the draft. He currently ranks as #8 in receiving stats for current year.
The only reason I posted the picture was to show Tulsa was no cake walk. They have some talent.
This is the most talented & deepest defense that we've had since Dana took over. However, the defense hasn't been tested yet. Georgia Southern is 1 dimensional, Liberty is an FCS school & Maryland's QBs are just awful. We'll find out what they are truly made of on Saturday as they finally will face a really good offense. We are hopeful that we finally have a solid defense, but until we actually play offenses with a pulse we won't know for sure. And that all starts on Saturday.
Agree with your statement about the trenches. Last year Oklahoma just manhandled our O & D lines. Stryker was in our backfield all day before Trickett could even get the snap. And in the 2nd half, Perrine was at our 2nd level running free into the secondary pretty much every play & when we did try to tackle him, he punished our defenders. We were completely worn down on both sides of the ball by the end of the game last season.
I'm hopeful that we have better depth on defense this season so that we're not spent half way through the 3rd quarter this year as Perrine gave me nightmares for weeks after last year's game. Our offensive line scares me. Up until Saturday we were struggling to get any push in the running game. We finally got the running game going on Saturday, but our pass blocking was atrocious as Howard was getting chased out of the pocket quite a bit. And talent wise, Oklahoma is much better than MD up front on the defensive line so that's going to be a big challenge for our big uglies.
Should be a good game. Looking forward to it. We owe you all. OU & KSU are the only teams we haven't beaten yet since joining the Big 12.

When you start comparing stats between teams, it kind of ignores schedule strength of schedule. Maryland is pretty mediocre this year so far, and less than that against West Virginia. Obviously, the Mountaineers had something to do with that. But you guys have played three home games, two of them against 1-AA teams. You might just beat OU in Norman. But you haven't really been tested yet. I figure West Virginia will be this weekend.
The margin over Maryland was eye catching for sure. But the road is a different task.
The flip side is that Tulsa isn't close to West Virginia, and the Golden Hurricane made things very interesting, with a little splurge just before the half. And with a couple of other breaks, might have made it even closer.

You WVU fans keep talking about Striker and yes he's very good. We have another that has had a better year, IMO. His name is Devante Bond. He had a great game against Tennessee. Also watch out for a DT named Charles Walker. He can stuff the run better than Jordan Phillips did last year.
