What exactly is WVU on the hook for?

Here (from another site) is what WVU is looking at towards buying out Neal Brown. Something that thanks to ignorant "fans" pressure and the current AD succumbing to the same, along with the BOG looks to be an impossible task. Dire times ahead for WVU football it appears source-https://bluegoldnews.com/west-virginia-mountaineers/analyzing-the-buyouts-in-neal-browns-new-wvu-contract/:

What we don't know for sure though, is what has WVU has from their not too shabby athletic budget that could be put towards righting the ship?

With Texas and Oklahoma leaving about the time the next TV deals are negotiated, how can WVU throw money around not knowing how big (or in this case small) the conference TV deal will be, just because fans are not willing to accept that fact that the current coach does not yet have all the pieces in place to compete at this level.

With the NIL era under way WVU, and all schools for that matter, need to rethink how they should be utilizing financial resources. If WVU had a self imposed “salary cap” let’s say for argument’s sake WVU could allocate $15m to “payroll” which includes coaches and players. Between a buyout, the new coach and assistants, on top of a buyout, we are allocating nearly half the payroll to coaches, one of whom is not actually here.

So the schools that are continually trigger happy in this new frontier are going to fall behind very quickly IMO. Brown has undoubtedly been a dud thus far, but off the field he is fine, and as an actual game manager he could be worse. His biggest weakness is players, so if we can get better players via NIL the rest will solve itself. That wasn’t the case before NIL, where the only guy you could technically pay for to secure better results was the coach.

There are plenty of examples of coaches that have improved by year 3 such as Klieman at K State, or the hated D Holgorsen at Houston or Michigan State's Tucker who hasn't even had 2 years yet showed tremendous growth and success.

No one getting paid to win games is going to get an endless amount of time to "improve", especially when there is 0 sign of improvement anywhere in the program.

Moving on from someone not performing even basic success in their job tasks is not the same thing as being "trigger happy". Now people are using all of these excuses to excuse away poor coaching performance such as players getting rights they should have had all along? Makes no sense.

The previous staff showed WVU could win at an average of 8 wins and improve. The current staff is performing worse in every aspect yet for some reason blind support? Suspect it has more to do with "culture" than doing what he is supposedly hired to do--win games for WVU. That he is NOT doing, and that is exactly what gets coaches fired.

Sometimes its just not a good fit. WVU let the secondmost winning coach ever go, why hang onto the worst coaching effort in over 40 years?

Can see these same people in a few years after more 5 win or less seasons and in the dregs claiming they never said keep Brown, or that you had to give him a chance? How many years of chances at $4,000,000 per year does he need exactly? Nothing is improved, in fact its sliding backwards in every category.

Like I said it’s a different frontier… our fans always cry because we don’t have the money to pay players like Bama… yet you want to spend $5.8m to get Neal out of here + another $4m to another guy? Why not just pay that money to players? A bunch of terrible coaches rode great players to big time success, nothing about Neal says he couldn’t manage a great roster to great results, his biggest flaw is being overly loyal to Doege. Get the damned players and the rest will take care of itself.

100 percent combined salary. That's 2021 - 2026. Shrinks each January. The affordable spot is Janyary 2024.

I'm so happy you're stroking out over it.

IF MY MATH IS CORRECT, COULD BE $14 MILLION BUYOUT. WHO HAS THAT KIND OF MONEY TO PAY FOR IT?
Your math is wrong.

if Brown were let go following the 2023 season, he would still be due $12.7 million (the amount of his contract for 2024-26). Were he to be terminated on Jan. 10, 2025, he would receive $7,310,000 (85% of the remaining two years of the contract).

if West Virginia decides to fire Brown for reasons other than violations of NCAA rules or inappropriate conduct, it will be on the hook for all or most of the remaining value of the contract, which runs through Dec, 31, 2026.

If he is let go before Dec, 31, 2024, WVU would owe him 100% of the remaining value of the contract, while a termination between Jan 1, 2025 and Dec. 31, 2026 would net Brown 85% of the total remaining contract amount.

Neal Brown's Contract Extension

YEARSALARYBROWN BUYOUT
2021$3,150,000$5,837,500
2022$3,500,000$5,050,000
2023$4,000,000$4,212,500
2024$4,100,000$3,175,000
2025$4,200,000$1,075,000
2026$4,400,000$550,000
For example, if Brown were let go following the 2023 season, he would still be due $12.7 million (the amount of his contract for 2024-26). Were he to be terminated on Jan. 10, 2025, he would receive $7,310,000 (85% of the remaining two years of the contract).

But we’re poor! Little old WV can’t possibly afford that!

tOSU just paid $1m to a QB, we could have paid him $2m and itd be a bargain if he wins a Heisman.

My point is if we can pay $5m to a coach that won’t actually be here, then we can cut a check for $2m to a can’t miss QB.
You're forgetting the school is not paying the NIL the boosters are. Nudge nudge wink wink no what I mean.

Right, and if our admin can’t figure out how to funnel the money through the appropriate channels then they need to be replaced.

The administration made a terrible mistake- up to them to figure out how to pay for it. At some pt if WVU isnt attractive to fans, merchandise and ticket sales drop. Losing teams arent very popular in tv negotiations either.

Thats real money already going out the door. You cant keep a five win coach ( including fcs games) through 2026- that would be an epic disaster for WVU.

It’s a different game now you twit. The best coaches in the NFL make up like 6% of the team’s payroll, yet we are going to allocate $9m to a new coach and a sunk cost while our team payroll is under $1m? We’re not gonna win anything regardless of the coach!

Money should be used to get the players first. The coach is so completely secondary if paying the players is on the table.

The combination of NIL and transfer portal is going to turn WVU and every other mid-level program into farm teams a few elites. Hard to imagine ever being able to develop and keep a Geno Smith or Pat White under this paradigm. As soon as they show a hint of proven talent, a Texas or Ohio State will show up waving huge stacks of cash around. This sucks.

Speaking of twits- the schools are not the ones paying NIL deals for players its private companies. So while WVU should be working hard to work with private entities to get deals for players, only so much they can do there.

None of that has anything to do with whether the coach can coach up more than five wins a season. This one hasnt been able to hold onto any players anyways.

Wrong. By the way, HCNB would be wise to monitor the quarterback situation at Ohio State. Five-star C.J. Stroud returns as the starter in 2022, so at least two of Ohio State's highly-rated quarterbacks, including five-star freshman Quinn Ewers, is likely to hit the transfer portal in January. Ewers and five-star Kyle McCord are much better QB prospects than anybody on WVU's current roster. Gobble one of them up, and 2022 looks a lot better for WVU.

NIL has changed the complexion of the game for every program. We'll see some of the top tier players on mid tier programs moving to the Blue Bloods where they can get paid more. Unfortunately most of the mid tier programs don't have the donors to shell out the cash to keep players. They will be able to keep some, but not the best.

And Brown is going nowhere next year. He'll be here for 2022. with 6 W's he'll be here for 2023. Hopefully we will be able to keep most of our best players. This is still a very young team and the cupboard is just now starting to fill up. Let's see how Greene, Crowder and Marchiol compete for the QB job next year. That will be the key to success for NB in the future.

Every school has the same problem even the Bigger programs. WVU may have to bring in more players through the year but they also must maintain an environment good players want to be a part of and win for.

…. and speaking of holding onto players.

This year for 2022 eligibility:
Since fall camp 5 players have entered the portal including a quarterback.

Last season for 2021 eligibility:
Eight players left the program including two quarterbacks.

The season before for 2020 eligibility:
Five players left.

Where in the world is all this going on? Why that would be at the University of Houston. One of the two quarterbacks that entered the portal last year was the head man’s own son.

Right. Only the SEC has the magic formula to funnel money to players via NIL that schools like WVU cannot possibly mimmick. Go buy $2m worth of advertising in the Arizona Diamondbacks program and tell Kendrick to go get a QB.

NIL may be the one thing that saves us. Schools actively recruiting our current players should be a serious violation but apparently it's not. How many have entered the portal, 9? Oklahoma lost 17, Texas Tech 16, Kansas State 14. NIL can keep a big fish in a small pond.

News flash: the cupboard was made bare by Brown and it isn’t filling up.

Three years in and zilch for improvement. Just losses and an under .500 coaching effort- worst in over 40 years at WVU.

Its simply NOT sustainable. Unfortunately there is no turn around visible at this point as you keep wishing— just another sub .500 season or seasons.

Are you ever going to address the fact that we can literally buy Brown players to fill it up? On what planet does is now make sense to have a $5m sunk cost when $5m can land a blue chip QB and some linemen?

Here (from another site) is what WVU is looking at towards buying out Neal Brown. Something that thanks to ignorant "fans" pressure and the current AD succumbing to the same, along with the BOG looks to be an impossible task. Dire times ahead for WVU football it appears source-https://bluegoldnews.com/west-virginia-mountaineers/analyzing-the-buyouts-in-neal-browns-new-wvu-contract/:

YEARSALARYBROWN BUYOUT
2021$3,150,000$5,837,500
2022$3,500,000$5,050,000
2023$4,000,000$4,212,500
2024$4,100,000$3,175,000
2025$4,200,000$1,075,000
2026$4,400,000$550,000

When you consider the direction the attendance is going, some of those higher buyouts become more attractive. If you start averaging 10 - 15 K in attendance per game, how does that impact the budget.

I think next year is the make or break year for Neil Brown. One of my most recent gripes about him is that he is not filling his classes and then complains about depth. Yes, the average ratings for his recruits are going up, but depth is equally important.

Is it ever going to sink into you that SCHOOLS are NOT the ones allowed to pay players. PRIVATE ENTITIES and players can now come to agreement for NIL deals. Has nothing to do with the schools themselves.

Also, buying players has NOTHING to do with a coach being able to coach them to wins, which Neal Brown has shown he cannot do (nor can he retain players by the massive departure list since BEFORE NIL became a thing).

WVU cannot BUY players, and they can't indefinitely retain a coach that cannot WIN--what he was hired to do but has failed at so far.
