What high school sports should be about,....

My son runs cross-country and I saw a similar situation this year at an invitational meet in Palatine where a girl collapsed with about 100 feet to go to the finish. Her legs turned to noodles and while she did fall, she got herself up and finished in a similar fashion. Her coach was yelling "quit if you have to," but she didn't. Something to see on tape, but seeing that in person is a different thing altogether. Perseverance.

Cross country runners are nuts. The elite ones push themselves to the point of breaking every single time they run a race.

I was very impressed with the sportsmanship shown by South Elgin's players. Obviously reflects the coaching staff. Also, they spent several minutes after the game spending the last moments as a team for the last time.

You could say "nuts" about a lot of athletes. A guy catches a kickoff and begins to run as hard as he can in a direction with 11 men headed toward him running as hard as they can with the intention of hitting him as hard as they possible can. Then after taking that hit, he gets up (hopefully) goes back to the sideline and waits his next chance to do it all over again.

Some cross country runners and the majority of others may look at that as being nuts.

It all depends on a person's perspective.

DR touched on it in one word - perspective.

A lot of times and I'm guilty too, we forget what we are watching. Can be any sport really. These are kids - teenagers. Yet they do things in their arenas that just blow our minds or gives us a lump in our throats.

I have seen more high levels of sportsmanship in this football post season than I can remember. The respect teams and coaches have for the opposition is awesome.

At the end of the Loyola Stevenson game, one of Loyolas linebackers spent a good 10 minutes at the end of the handshake line complimenting Jack Sorenson. And Sorenson did the same.

For me, THATS why I love sports. Football in particular

Years ago, as part of preseason conditioning for basketball, used to have to run with CC team. Could never figure out why those guys liked enduring all that pain without having a ball in their hands.

I have seen this a few times in CC. Other sports don't allow players concussed/suspected concussed to continue these days, not sure why CC allows runners definitely compromised to keep risking a serious injury.

Don't believe this girl was injured versus fatigued/spent. Have been around CC for some time and coaches are always very careful around injuries and not asking their athletes to get back on the course, practice or competition, until they're cleared by a doc.

Not saying she was injured, but she was risking injury. I have seen the wobbling CC runner, they are not fatigued/spent, they are dehydrated or have some other chemical/mineral deficiency/imbalance going on. Yes these athletes have the will to continue, but someone with a clearer head needs to step in and stop the person and get immediate medical attention.
