I notice some of the posters have a gold banner in their name field that says "Gold Member". Does this make them/you spedial somehow meaning I should give these posters more merit when weighing whether their viewpoints are legitimate?

Looks like I was wrong. Not really sure. Could be length of time they have been a member.

Where does it show up as being a gold member? Guessing it means you're a paying member.
