What is average?

I ran across this South Carolina article that makes a statement that NU and others are "right back in the rare air of college football". Unless your a true masochist, there's no reason to read the article. Just some writer crying about how is team isn't what it was a few years ago. But South Carolina is 6 - 6 this year, pretty average right? Hmmmm.

65 Power 5 (includes ND), I'll just call them (us) "the 65". The 65 overall record is 442 - 342, at 0.56 it is rounded to roughly a 7 - 5 record. Good or bad, I'm leaving the CC results in the numbers mostly because I'm too lazy to remove the results. These are our peers, the schools that can bring in the money to sustain longevity. Here's a breakdown of wins for the 65.

13 wins - 1 team
12 wins - 1 team
11 wins - 3 teams
10 wins - 5 teams
9 wins - 7 teams
8 wins - 13 teams
7 wins - 4 teams
6 wins - 10 teams
5 wins - 6 teams
4 wins - 7 teams
3 wins - 5 teams
2 wins - 3 teams

In a 12-game regular season + bowl game, 9 wins can leave a hungry fan base wanting more. 9 wins does separate a team from the pack of 6 to 8 game winners though. I don't know how we're gonna do in our bowl game, but I'm certainly hoping for another win.

So 26% (17 of 65 teams) with 9+ wins so far.

So we are on the fringe of the top quarter of P5 teams this year. Not horrible but we could have been in the top 17% (11 of 65) with one more win.

Would be nice to stop with the 9 win seasons and get a streak of 10 wins going.

Are there any teams that have had 9+ wins since 2000 after the whole season?

To answer the thread title: Nebraska football. Nebraska football is average.

Was listening to Unsportsmanlike Conduct on my way home from work yesterday. I agree with John when he describes the 2016 Huskers as the 2015 Huskers with better luck. I agree, and over the two seasons, that puts us at 15-10. Average.

Obviously, turning being average around into being better is a multi-year process that involves recruiting and developing players, and employing a system that uses those players in a better way than other teams use theirs.

I suppose better luck can be way to look at it. There might be one or two truly dominating teams that don't have to win close games. But for the rest, winning the close games/matchups is what separates 9 game winners from 7 game winners from 5 game winners. I see similarities between our 2015 and 2016 teams, but I see differences as well. In a 12-game season, there isn't a lot of room for error. So, I see 2015 as bad, 2016 as better than average, two different animals to me. But, to each their own.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around 9 wins, 2 blowout losses, and where we're going (if the ship has a different captain but we're on the same course).

As for the questions of 9+ wins since 2000. I don't know, I'm not one of the 9-win guys. I know that NU doesn't fit in the category, so I don't see myself looking for the answers.

Upon re-reading my post, it's really harsh. I think we are heading in a good direction. The key is our improved approach to recruiting.

I'm not sure I'd say better luck was the case because the same story played out over and over this season, luck is more random. I'd say they were a better 4 quarter team than most of the teams they played.
