What more do we want?

So, with Mullins/Preston in the fold, Hunger healthy, three freshmen coming in, and Boo/Chase (hopefully) coming back, if we could get one more transfer, what do we want most? I'm not talking about a who per se, more of a what. What do we need most? I really really want a three-point sharpshooter. The kind of guy who our opponents would never want to leave open. I feel that's the last piece we need. Is there something else others would prefer?

I notice there's already a Bracketology by Lunardi, with NU as a "first four out" - not clear if that assumes Boo and/or Chase are returning or not, but I have to assume if they both come back, NU would start to look really good to prognosticators for next year.

Let's just hope Clark Kellogg doesn't pick NU for the Final Four.

What do we want the most? I'd say a 6'9" 3-and-D guy. Someone who can guard athletic bigs and can spread the floor with his shooting range.

Pretty much this.

Has to have an outside shot or it's not compatible with big Matt.

Tallish so we are not bullied inside or on the boards.

So far I described Beran. A step up would be more lateral movement. Think staying with players like Jacquez, not true 4's, who have game putting the ball on the floor.

I’m hoping Berry can be our sharpshooter. He had some great (and critical) shooting games but too many off nights. If he missed his first shot or two, he usually couldn’t remedy that during the game.
I agree that our biggest need is basically a more advanced version of what we had in Beran: a taller guy who can make a jumper and play good defense.

Not sure why everybody seems to think we need a Beran replacement!
Martinelli and Hunger will both be better than Robbie by December 1.
Barnhizer has to start at either the 3 or 4.

We don't need much of anything if Buie and Audige return. On the other hand, if one of them doesn't...

I don't know that we do, as his contributions could be folded over into the responsibilities of new and current Wildcats, but you know, I'm greedy. I want my only worry about the 2023-2024 NU team to be that it has too many mouths to feed.

Not a Beran replacement, a Beran improvement. Someone who can guard athletic bigs and make 2-3 three-pointers per game. This is just a wish list, and until we see that Hunger or Mart can do both of these things, then that is top of the wish list.

I tend to agree with PWB. I think we already have the Beran replacement in house. Give me that 3 point sharpshooter who can help open up the middle. The guy who has NCAA tourney experience and is a gritty defender.

We need more scoring even if Chase & Boo return.

It’d be nice to land another guard who can create his own shot.

So we agree. No one is calling for a Beran replacement. We want a 3-point shooter who can play D. I think that's exactly what I asked for at the start of the thread. I'd like him to have some height too.

Collins likes to play 3 guards, I'm assuming for perimeter defense, more quickness on the floor, better ball movement on offense, better shooting from outside the arc...

and we currently have

5 - Nicholson / Preston / Hunger
4 - Barnhizer / Martinelli / Hunger //// Barkley
3 - Berry / Barnhizer / Mullins / Martinelli
2 - Audige / Berry / Mullins
1 - Buie /////// Clayton / Strauss

To me, we're pretty set at the 5 and not too bad at the 4. But I'm expecting solid play from Luke Hunger.
The roster has flexibility.
Lots of questions at the guard positions - Clayton, Strauss and Mullins are relative unknowns.

Got to be able to defend too. That’s the NU calling card now!

Bob’s head may explode if Boo & Chase return and we use all 13 scholarships.

I'm not so sure Mullins doesn't have some of Beran's role already covered, potentially.
