Worst single half of basketball I've ever seen. Outscored 53-13. No one could step up to make a shot to stop the bleeding. Even in a stretch where the defense held their ground.

So much went wrong. What stuck out to you? To me, this team doesn't function properly without Buie playing at a high level (like BMac previously).

Buie didn't even need to play at a high level. Just an average level would be fine, we have plenty of talent.

We scored 13 second half points.
For the game:
Buie 0-6
Audige 1-7
Kopp 2-7

We struggle in every game Buie disappears. If he contributes, even at a modest 10 pt game, we seem to be fine. Yet, he was awful in the 1st and we were killing.

For all the CC in game lovers, this is the type of situation that requires doing something. Or the cliche of the definition of insanity totally applies.

Just a thought, many coaches would switch the starting lineup to shake things up. What is our coach going to do? If anything

These things leave marks. Can’t imagine those kids in that locker room right now.

Our guards can't score for 1 thing (though Gaines surprisingly scored the most). We don't have any aggressive strong players up front, except Young who had a bad night. Audige and Boo were terrible.

Yep. At a certain point in the second half, Cockburn and Dosunmu knew they could stomp on our throats. You saw it with the outbursts of energy and slapping the floor. NU had no "killer" to shut that kind of thing down with Buie and Audige playing miserably. And it turned into a doom loop.

Maybe NU should have kicked them while they were down there!

I agree with that. College is a point guards game now and Buie is the only true creator NU has. When he starts slow and can't find a way out of it, NU is in trouble. I think NU needs to recruit another playmaking guard. I was surprised to see none of the incoming players in the class of 2021 seem to fit that description. In the interim, this is another reason why playing Young more makes a lot of sense in my opinion. His playmaking skills in the post cause defenses to collapse just like Buie's ball penetration does. If Buie is struggling or on the bench, initiating the offense thru Young in the post will generate higher percentage shots for NU's shooters on the perimeter and for cutters going to the basket.

You have to score inside, like the center from Illinois. Young tried, but got beat! Unless u can score in the paint, you got no chance in this league.

I have no idea what that was. I was getting very upset after getting my hopes up. But it seems we had 2 fouls on Cockburn and Ayo at the half. If anything, wouldn't you keep attacking those guys? Young seemed capable of working against Kofi inside.

Maybe our guard play was so abysmal that we could not even work inside? Did Illinois pressure the ball so much that we could not shoot, pass or even see? How does an entire team fold like that????

As I just posted in another thread, I think Collins has to seriously consider giving Berry some time at lead guard. I've seen enough from him this year to think he's up for that challenge.

As for next year, Collins has called Roper a "swiss army knife" that can play on or off the ball, so hopefully he has a bit of lead guard in him, like Buie.

Cockburn had several fouls they didn't call on him that they'd call on us.

Scoring droughts are old business at NU. I couldn't watch it to the end.

I'd guess CCC knows he can't win in the conference with an average game from this team and he tried to encourage them by putting pressure on them to shoot better and encouraging them to put pressure on themselves. Just like Coach K does at Duke. But the team didn't react the way he and they hoped they would, the way the stars at Duke react, to reach their peak performance level.

Could be he's committed to this approach, too.

Home court doesn't seem to mean much to NU yet, either.
