What the hell, why not look at opening week of college football?

I mean, we're at the boring stage, waiting for baseball to go away and basketball just a distance memory for WVU fans.
Wisconsin at Alabama and Ohio State at Virginia Tech might be the best matchups.
South Carolina at North Carolina could be interesting.
Michigan at Utah, too.
TCU at Minnesota, too.
Texas at Notre Dame.
BYU at Nebraska.

Other Big 12 teams are doing the cupcake route: Oklahoma State at Central Michigan, Akron at Oklahoma, Georgia South at West Virginia,

Baylor at SMU maybe could be worthwhile.

Some other potentially intriguing games and/or storylines that first weekend that you missed:

Washington at Boise St = Petersen returns
Louisville/Auburn at the Georgia Dome
Arizona St/Texas A&M in Houston
Stanford at Northwestern = The High SAT Bowl

Power-5 schools risking it on the road at Group-of-5 campuses:
Oklahoma St at Central Michigan
Michigan St at Western Michigan
Purdue at Marshall
Mississippi St at Southern Miss
Duke at Tulane
Penn St at Temple
Colorado at Hawaii

Power-5 schools seeking revenge for recent losses to FCS teams:
Youngstown St at Pitt
Northern Iowa at Iowa St

Furthermore, Cuyahoga, I would suggest WVU's opener v. Georgia Southern is a lot more interesting than it appears at first glance. Everybody raved about the tough schedule we played last year, but did anybody notice the Mountaineers technically will face more defending conference champions this year than last? Georgia Southern is the first of those, although FBS transition rules prevented them from taking the Sun Belt champion bowl slot last year.

My picks:

Bama at home, but they'll feel it.
Ohio St. on the road. Might be close.
USC over UNC
Utah over UM. I don't really know what Utah has this year, but the expected Harbaugh miracle transformation might take a minute.
TCU at Minnesota. Interesting, indeed. TCU
Texas at ND. Interesting, indeed. Cheaters at home.
BYU at Nebraska. No clue, will check out future opp. BYU.

Good post, CFE.

Thanks, Priddy. I just thought we needed something to talk about besides thrashing each other, Dana, the walls. In other words, the usual waiting-for-the-opener cabin fever stuff.

I have a girl friend who has a son who attends Georgia Southern. Because of that, I've followed them. They are pretty darn good. They could give us some trouble. I wouldn't touch this game from a betting stand point.

I think you will see in a hurry what a difference a hard nosed coach like Harbaugh makes. Michigan has talent on the roster and he's exactly the type of coach that'll squeeze every drop of it out of a player. Don't be surprised if they finish ranked in the top 25.(Also wouldn't be surprised if the spoiled lazy kids with a bunch of stars by their name don't quit and the whole thing go down the tubes.)

Georgia Southern upset Florida two years ago and is coming off a 9-3 season. This is not Cupcake U.

Whether or not GSU ends up as your cupcake game remains to be seen. Both GT & NC State fans changed their minds during their games. The biggest threat to GSUs success next year is the replacement of 4 senior offensive linemen. We have a **GREAT** running game between the tackles, but that can be negated with lack luster blocking. If the offensive line jells than your in for a hell of a fight if not than GSU is in for a long day & a paycheck.

Do you expect your team to be better this year than last? Same or worse?

It hard for me to predict when you have a whole area ( 4 offensive linemen) that need to e replaced. As you know ALL offences start on the front with the hogs in the trenches. Based on how the new coaching staff put in a new offense & went 9-3 in our first year in FBS I think the staff has a good chance f whipping them into shape. We still lack the depth of a true FCS team. Last year we had 70 on scholarship. This year we should have 85, but most of those extra 15 players are freshmen and need to be trained.

Thanks for the break down. It may take you another year or two to build the depth you need but it looks like you're off to a good start.

Wisconsin is a program that could fall off quickly if they're not careful but I've always liked them. Ohio State will roll Virginia Tech. South Carolina wins by 14. Michigan wins a close one over Utah. Tcu curb stomps Minny. Notre Dame beats Texas and Nebraska beats BYU. I'm confident in getting at least half of those right. [laughing]

One game does not make a season. Competition gets a bit stiffer when we go to conference play while some of your favorites may have a less competitive game scheduled later in the season. For instance, NC plays NC A&T and Deleware which could be a little weaker than D1 schools. SC usually plays SC State and The Citadel late in the year. You can see where those schedules tend to balance out?

I agree with the majority of your picks here...especially TCU over Minny. The Gophers have lost more than a few to attrition, and although their receivers are BIG and quick they are raw....I do see the Heels and Cock's being a close one however...eager to see how Switzer fares vs the Cock's D/ Special teams....

What's your quarterback situation look like?

""In 2014 QB Keven Ellison came out of the spring as the Eagles’ top quarterback… Elusive and quick athlete who picked up new technique and scheme with ease… Poses major run and passing threat… In 2013 he earned a coveted helmet sticker from ESPN commentator Mark May for directing the Eagles’ epic win over Florida at “The Swamp”… Made sixth start of the season at quarterback against Gators, playing in all 11 games of 2013… Scored two touchdowns and ran for 118 yards as Georgia Southern racked up 429 yards, fourth-highest opponent total versus the Gators."" < Copy

My computer is very slow so I will est. states but very close to what they were.

2015 QB Ellison - 1000 yards passing, 1,200 yards rushing at 6.4 yards per carry.
2015 RB Breida - 1,500 yards rushing @ 8.7 ypc
2015 RB Ramsby - 750 yards rushing @ 4.7 ypc

We have some RB at 9.0+ YPC but they were under 500 yards each for the year.

WE are in good shape as far as QB & RB are concerned.

Good information. Thanks. Quarterback is still our biggest question mark but Dana has always found a guy that can put up numbers.
