What Valuable Lessons Did Your Team Learn in '16

For GW, we learned more than a few:

  1. Losing conference isn't the end of the world (right MS?)
  2. Patience through tough times builds long-term value
  3. IHSA legislation removing unofficial nicknames from uniforms will be a boon for fundraising in '17
  4. Duchon is a great setting for a Semi but next time we leave the sprinklers on all night
  5. GW has a nice stable of returning runners if any transferring OL are looking for a tax abatement
  6. you can never have too many linebackers
What did you guys learn?

So no more "hitters" on the front of the jersey? That stinks. That's their identity

Can we also get rid of the uniforms where you can't see any numbers please?
Worst I saw this year were notre dames. White on white, green on green with a tiny outline of the number. Couldn't tell them apart.

From what I heard, every team at the school has to use the same mascot name, eliminating sport specific nicknames on the uniform.

Totally blows
What's the thinking behind this rule? Does that means the masculine/feminine derivations of the mascot name must be lost too? What does that do for a school like JCA? Seems like the epitome of pointless legislation to me...

Pretty sure that PC learned that it doesn't matter how many playoff points you end up with on your schedule if you don't win enough games to actually make the playoffs.

At least as a dad I learned that.

As far as the whole Montini/Naz thing, I don't much care for either, and have no horse in that race. However, seeing as they both had kind of **** years last season, a game between the two has lost some of its appeal to me.

It seems both play decent schedules, I mean lets be honest, neither schedule looks as cream puff as a few of these "9-0" public schools.

In looking at the last seven 8A winners, only 2 went 14-0 (LA '15 and Stevenson '14). Maine S this year and '13 Nap C had 3 losses. '11 Brook and '12 MC did not even win their conference. And MS '10 got blown out on ESPN by WWS and had 2 losses. All that matters is November.

great topic!

Patience. I was very proud of how hard a 1 won win Hilltopper team played. Coming from our tradition, knowing what they were up against, they never quit. I learned next season's team will be ready to fight.

As a fan of Mt. Carmel, I learned what IMG Academy was! When I learned that Houston Griffith was transferring to IMG, I thought it would hurt, but not be a devastating blow. The later was true. Not having this 4 star DB in our secondary this season costed MC 3, possibly 4 wins. I think MC beats SR and Montini with him, and possibly BR and LA. We lost to SR by 3, Montini by 6 and BR and LA by 7, having him in the secondary would have prevented a score in each of those games, just my prediction, plus I know he would have been used on offense in situations. The only good of having him not there is that Soph Eddie McGee, with the help of the 4 extra Prep Bowl games, really came into his own as a DB and will be a standout the next two years, assuming he stays at MC. Move back to Chicago for your senior year Houston!!!

1 player makes a huge difference; especially if they play both sides.

I have been saying this for years...and my dear friend bones hates when I do. The STAR player in HS football means so much. One kid can account for wins (plural) in HS much like an NFL QB can. I've seen it time and time again. One star player makes ten other players so much better, too. One transfer in, one transfer out, things change dramatically - this is mostly germane to HS.

Especially nowadays. Even simply taking Jarvis off of Def, MS does not win 8A, let alone on offense

That lesson is so key. It is easy to allow the tough sledding to overwhelm. Acknowledging mortality forms a firm foundation on which to build.

Trib made a great choice for POY.

All the way through 7A Title game it was Evans, but watching that 8A game, it was Jarvis because he personally eliminated (to a certain extent) the key strength of the best team in the state. Just a wrecking crew.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident"
  • If you're married to the zone-read offense, it might be a good idea to develop dual-threat QBs.
  • Given the shrinking talent pool at some suburban programs, multi-dimensional athletes who fit this mold are becoming harder to find.
  • In the face of this challenge, coaches can either: pound square pegs into round holes (with predictable results); (or) adopt an offense less reliant on speed at QB position.
  • Exhibit A: GW's '80s throwback power I offense...death by Power / Jet / Pitch / Crossbuck / Bootleg. Good athletes run it great...great athletes win State!
