What was the greatest performance by a defensive unit in a Super Bowl? Opinions vary.

They could have played SB IX for a week and the Vikings offense would not have scored. The only points for Minny were a blocked punt for a td.
Minny had hall of famer Fran Tarkenton at QB a hall of famer on the OL,a top RB in Foreman and a top notch receiver in Gilliam. The Steel Curtain was just too dominant.
Shutdown OJ Simpson in the first playoff game, held the Raiders to I think 21 yards rushing in Oakland in the AFC Championship Game and then the Vikings to like 17.

Those mid 1970s Pittsburgh Steel Curtain defenses were the absolutely best, most intimidating, and most talented defenses in NFL history.

I am going from memory but I believe the Steel Curtain had 5 Hall of Fame players on those 1970s defenses: Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, Joe Greene, Jack Ham, and Jack Lambert. Scary talent.

Did LC Greenwood make the HOF too?

For me, for one Super Bowl game, the Legion of Boom and the complete and utter domination of the at-the-time greatest NFL offense in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Seahawks 43
Broncos 8.

And yes, the stillers of the 70s, the 85 bears, the 2000 ravens were all historically elite level defenses, but none played a historically great offense in a Super Bowl.

The Broncos didn’t get a first down until late in the first half. Again, the most prolific offense … didn’t …get … a first down… until late 2q. They didn’t score until the last play of the 3q if memory serves.

Unfortunately, Greenwood has yet to make it to the NFL Hall of Fame. Greenwood was a tremendous player along with Dwight “Mad Dog” White and Ernie “Fats” Holmes.
Ernie Holmes would have scared me. He just looked mean between. He died pretty early like 59 I think.

They still gave up 18 first downs and more than 300 yards of total offense to the Broncos and didn't pitch a shutout. Franco Harris, alone, had more rushing yards than the Vikings had in TOTAL yards on offense. In fact, the Steelers had more penalty yards than the Vikings had in TOTAL yards on offense. I don't believe any other SB defense can make those claims.

Super Bowl XI
The 1976 Oakland Raiders had an outstanding defense, the offense wasn’t too bad either. They dominated the Vikings in that Super Bowl.
