What will Cal 'tweak' for the NCAA tourney?

I got a strong feeling Cal has been planning a few changes for the NCAA tourney run. I think a hint was his recent remark that some questioned about 'taking more turnovers' or whatever exactly he said.

I think he plans to open up the offense, push for more penetration and look to create more open looks from the perimeter. The Cats took only six 3-pointers against Florida, and only a couple in the last ten minutes against Georgia. May need to generate more open looks, and taken more chances, against higher octane offenses in the tournament. Won't be able to outscore some teams given UK's occasional problems in scoring from three feet.

Yes they will. None of those teams play defense. UK has a very good offense. I'm not sure any surer way to lose the title than to jack up a bunch of 3's. Reading that article on Foxsports about the 2010 made me sick today. 4/32...geez.

I don't think he plans on tweaking us as much as giving a giant titty-twister to the tournament field in general...

(If I had .gif skills I'd paste Cals head over the twister and Emmert's head over the twistee.)

And there are teams out there that can score and play decent defense. The Cats may have to win a couple games scoring in the 70s against legitimately talented teams. I've been encouraged with the very good inside passing by the bigs. But a perimeter game beyond what the Cats showed against Florida may be necessary at some point.
Name me some teams.

I guess you mean Wisconsin because that is the only team that might score in the 70s on UK (maybe) that might have a chance of keeping it competitive.

UVA, Arizona...not good enough on offense to score in the 70s on UK. Duke, ND, Gonzaga...may get to the 70s, but UK will score 90 on them. I admit I do not know enough about Nova to judge. KU sucks...not sure about anyone else you might be talking about.

Hopefully tweak our pick and roll defense when our bigs get pulled out of the paint that we keep getting burned on. We fix that and I don't see us losing to anybody.

I wouldn't say we have a "very good offense", but we do have very good athletic players that can create offense. Our defense is what makes us unbeatable.

Actually, we do have a very good offense. The fact that you don't realize that reveals how little you understand what you're watching.

Can't guarantee Cal will follow my advice, but I recommended we exchange "OLD FOLK'S COUNTRY SAUSAGE" for some good ole fashioned hog jowl for the tourney run, he hasn't gotten back with me yet.

I think he is tweaking the team right now, by reducing pressure. He has been quoted saying that he is telling the team that the SEC tournament is just for the fans (don't sweat it, it does not matter). Play the SEC for the fans and then the NCAA is for you.

Transition defense and denying second chance baskets on defense.

Why not run Booker off of the curl more? He flourished doing that at the beginning of the SEC. Teams are keying on him, but screens can get him free to shoot from outside.

I also see Aaron Harrison getting his shooting eye back. You can believe that teams will be aware of him...

In our last 15 games UK has scored over 75 points 3 times. They are unlikely to put up more than that on any team in the field in the NCAAT except perhaps for the first game. The tournament is all about possession type games where every team typically plays at a higher level of intensity and effort on D, especially the really good one's.

I think this is on the mark. Calipari wants the guards to penetrate and create offensive opportunities near the basket, either by taking the shot in the lane or by passing to our bigs. The maturations of Towns and Lyles as high percentage scorers in the paint has precipitated this change in offensive approach. This has always been Dakari's strongest suit as well. Calipari will work the ball down low to those guys until someone shows they can stop it. To do that, the other team will have to weaken their defensive perimeter. That's when the ball will get worked inside-out to our shooters.
