I love our round ball Cat's of course, but if we could actually trade a national championship in football for basketball I'd go for that. Let's be realistic though, and set a goal of winning the SEC East. If we can accomplish that then we can talk about an SEC title. And then, and only then a national one which winning the SEC title would likely put us in a great position to do. If only that can happen in my remaining lifetime.

My standards are a bit lower.

In exchange for a BB national championship I'll take a competent, hard nosed, disciplined team with that takes care of business vs. lesser opponents and secures wins over Florida, UT, UL and WKU for starters

Since I'm one of the few UK fans who doesn't give a damn about basketball, I'd take football any day. Truth be told, I'd take a baseball championship over seeing another basketball championship.

Interesting observation, I noticed that there seems to be a rift between the football and basketball fans on here. Why?

As a football fan myself I will always prefer success on that side but 2007 was a year I will never forget. As a Gator fan watching the football team knock off tOSU for the title was very very satisfying. 3 months later watching them knock off the Buckeyes again to complete the back to back was equally satisfying.

With that said we are a football school first and always but we don't throw barbs at the bball first fans. Is the BBN just overly snobbish to the Blue Gridiron side?

A respectful question from an outsider. Thanks for offering insight from your fan base.

IMO, the UK Rivals site is a microcosm of the UK fan base. The majority of UK fans love both FB and BB, but there is a sizable segment that are "BB-only" fans. Many of them are indifferent but a few of them are borderline hostile to FB. I met a guy at a party on Friday night who was wearing a UK shirt, and we had a good conversation. Unfortunately it turns out he is one of the BB only fans. He just joined my church, so I will work on converting him to UK FB and see where it goes.

The posters on Wildcat Lair and Rupp's Rafters just don't intermingle all that much. Out of my 980+ posts on this site, probably 920+ have been on the FB board. And I happen to love UK BB almost as much I as love UK FB, which is pretty high up there right after God and family.

In closing, I think it comes down to emotional satisfaction. It's easier and more fun to support a consistent winner. All this being said, I think UK FB has great fan support given the relative lack of success we've experienced over the years.

There's really a lot more undercurrents between these two sports then an outsider would be aware of. Up until recently the powers that be used football as a cash cow but invested all the money and energy into roundball to satisfy a rabid basketball crazy fan base. However with the popularity of boards like this, social media, and talk shows like KSR, the fans became wise to what was going on. People will argue about what lit the fuse but the fact is a few years ago, the administration saw the writing on he wall. Football was no longer going to be supported by the fans unless the administration supported it as well. Then like magic all of a sudden large sums of money appeared for major facility upgrades, hiring of first class coaching talent, a 21st century football marketing campaign etc. Kentucky now for the first time in decades has become serious about building a football program, however the years of neglect, to promote basketball still is a bitter memory in the fans that have loyally supported football over the years as well as the many new fans it's attracting. Conversely now that the spotlight has been directed toward football, some that are oriented towards basketball don't like the fact that attention is being diverted away from their sport. Thus you have some of this friction.

I think most fans to some degree have a favorite but usually support both of the major sports. Personally I'm now satisfied with the support each program is receiving.

Id trade all the basketball hoopla we've ever had for football in a second.
I would take a football title just because it would mean a lot more for UK than another basketball title would. No one does basketball better than UK, and I want it to stay that way. Doesn't mean we can't get up there in football, though.

BBN is hoops focused regardless of what anyone here wants. Check online posts/articles/gear numbers. Net, BBN wants a hoops title. Me, I couldn't name a basketball incoming FR.

That's easy. Football championship. The next basketball one is inevitable at some point. It might take another 10 years but eventually it will happen no matter what.

We don't just have "Basketball Only" fans. We have the ultra douchebag set that wear UK gear during basketball season, then put on other teams colors during football season. They don't just root for other teams, for the most part they mock UK football.

Here in Eastern Ky, the "Ky Basketball fan/Ohio State Football fan" subspecies is pretty common, although I am told that Ky Basketball/Notre Dame Football fans are pretty common in the Western parts of the state.

I love both....but KY football and a championship would be great!
I'm up for a football championship AFTER the basketball team hangs #12 to pass UCLA (which also gives Cal #5 to surpass Rupp and Coach K). Until then I'll take 8 or more wins and a warm weather bowl every year!

As a western KY native, I am sad to say that you are correct about the UK BB / ND FB split in this area.

If we start putting a formidable team on the field watch how fast a lot of those bandwagon fans jump back on board.

I love both but if a gun were to my head, I'd give our basketball tradition just to be a Georgia or Florida State level of football success school. Football is just more fun than basketball.

I know it is not just about the money, but Ky. would make more money in the one year that we were national champions than four years in a row winning the NCAA, giving us 12 national titles. The recruiting in football would be out of this world while our basketball recruiting would be out of this world also but then it has been that way for quite a spell. How would you like it if we had five or six five star players. Either would be nice and both would be fantasticbut as far as which one would help UK the most----------- FOOTBALL no doubt about it.

The 2007 team had several players I would put in the elite category but they did not have a lot of depth behind them. That's why MSU was able to knock us off after we beat #1 LSU and took Florida to the mat. In college football, but especially this conference you have to have good depth to get through a season.
Quite true.
