And just a few years ago he was mentioned for USC and NFL jobs. It's amazing how quickly it can all fall apart. Articles here in Houston suggest that Sumlin badly mishandled the QB competition and managed to piss both kids off. 5-star HS QBs tend to have a rather inflated ego and neither could 'put up with' Sumlin's actions. Several suggestions that Sumlin misled both during recruiting and it just kind of kept going into the tank after that.
So, both of these kids undoubtedly helped boost A&M's recruiting rankings. Wonder what they'd be ranked now that BOTH are no longer on the team. One more reason that recruiting rankings don't always mean success (there is a strong correlation). There are several positions where only one highly-ranked kid can play at a time so signing 2 or 3 at that position really shouldn't help the overall rankings. Plus, if some highly ranked kids flunk out, get injured and/or transfer, obviously that doesn't help at all either. Wonder if there is a service that ranks the classes after they've been in college for a few years, i.e. rank the classes after they've shown whether they can play at the next level or not. It would be interesting to see how the best HS classes look 2-3 years later and how many are even contributors on the team they signed with initially.

Fall apart? His worst record at A&M is 8-5 and he has to play Bama, LSU, Ole Miss, and Miss State every year.

When you spend over $500 million on renovations in a football crazy state, 8-5 is falling apart.
Its A&M, that's not even close to falling apart. Do yall not realize how mediocre they were the decade before he arrived?
They have invested too much and football is way too big in Texas for mediocrity.
A&M expects results for money spent. As for playing Bama, LSU, Ole Miss, Ms St....it'd probably help if he beat those teams. Ms St was Sumlin's only W out of that group this year. Don't know what he did with the QBs but the word "distrust" is being thrown around. Pretty significant.
8-5 is great for KY Football. Texas A&M has not been a football elite like Bama, etc. but they are in Texas where football is a religion. They have had some great teams in the past. In this day and age, they just has a Heisman winner, beat Bama at their place, top 10 recruiting classes, signed 2 of the top QB's the past few years, spent a fortune on facilities and a coaching staff, and now have TCU and Baylor killing it. So, yes, 8-5 for that program in this day and time is falling apart just like 4-5 is beyond horrible for the Texas Longhorns.
In Texas, the Longhorns and Aggies are such bitter rivals families who are alumni of one routinely forbid their children to attend the other. In decades past, Texas was the better on the gridiron than the Aggies. Hence the growth of the Aggie jokes. Not until Bear Bryant arrived in College Station did the Aggies begin a resurgence from the hinterlands of the old Southwest Conference. They also began to trend upward in academics from a farm mentality to one of the nation's best schools. Naturally, Texas beefed up their academics as well to also become one of the nation's best. Today, both schools have literally hundreds of millions in donor money and top flight athletic programs generally in football and baseball. This latest issue over two 5-star QB's leaving is more about ego than playing time.
From what I have gotten reading some of their boards is Allen came in as number 1 qb prospect in 14 class I guess it was, and took over the starting job during his frosh year, the qb he replaced transferred. Promises were made to Murray, another highly ranked qb, maybe number 1 dual threat I am not sure, but he also had promises made. Murray's dad was a former big deal for the Aggies. Murray was getting snaps and eventually took over the starting spot, upsetting Allens family, so he left. Murray is supposely disrespectful to the staff and does what he wants, Sumlin tried to reason with him and now he is mad and gone.
Sumlin reportly runs a very loose ship, no discipline and they want him gone too, but his buyout is bigger than Stoop's and they just spent a huge amount of money giving the stadium a facelift, around 500million, and the buyout might be an issue, they are hoping he leaves for the NFL.
I think that the reference to "falling apart" was not so much in regards to A&M's record this year, but the actual current situation at hand. Since Manzel left, the offense has been on a downward spiral & that is bothering some in the fan base. But, even more troubling is the fact that both of the top 2 QB's on the roster are transferring, they don't have a QB commit in the 2016 class, they have recently lost a couple of highly ranked verbal commits, their current recruiting class ranking has dropped considerably when compared to recent years, and an A&M talking head told P Finebaum that the current situation is "HOT".
IOW, it's not so much the current record as it is the future outlook.

^Pretty much nailed it. Another thing to consider is that Sumlin's record was, what, 11-2 his first year, 9-3 the second, 8-4 last year, 8-4 this year. Plus, he's absorbed some pretty significant beatdowns the past couple of years all the while recruiting, on paper, like gangbusters. A&M has spent a fortune on facilities upgrades, not to mention Sumlin's contract, so they expect more double digit wins and challenging for SECW crowns vs. 4 losses in the conference every year. When the NFL and elite CFB jobs are allegedly courting you and you use that leverage to get a huge raise, the fanbase expects some results. Hasn't happened. For being an offensive guru, their offense hasn't really set the world on fire the past two years. The inexplicable mismanagement of the QB competition this year only adds to hardcore Aggie discontent. So, 'falling apart' is definitely a relative description (like LSU fans saying Miles is 'dragging the program down' when he ONLY wins 9 games). But, there's no doubt that the Aggies have receded from where they were when Manziel was there. One growing suspicion is that Sumlin has done well with other coach's players (UofH, A&M) but hasn't shown he can do well with his own players - again, on a relative basis.

Big difference with UK and A&M football. Coach Stoops will be here two more years minimum. It take less than 3 phone calls and 15 minutes to buy up coach Sumlin contract!
The guy that started the 2014 under center - Hill - lost his spot to Allen and left for SMU. Sumlin should be glad the price of oil is in the tank or he would be gone.
Neither one of them have had 3 starting QB's in 2 seasons transfer. And neither one of them have the luxury of being the only SEC school in Texas. And finally both of them have taken teams from Mississippi of all places to a Big 6 Bowl game in the last 2 seasons - Freeze twice.
Sumlin had the records he did early on due to J-Foozeball. I thought that was obvious to anyone with a clue. Sumlin is a solid coach at a solid football school. They are not Alabama, and never will be. The sooner the other teams/fans in the SEC West realize that the better things will be for them each season. That doesn't mean they can't all win the West here and there, or even win the national title, but 8-4 in that division some years is not a bad thing.
Good post. As an aside, Prior to Bear Bryant arriving in Tuscaloosa, there were nearly 35 years of mediocre football similar to UK. A&M places football success at such a high plateau, they will spend, recruit and do everything possible to succeed.
This is what my brother, who's tuned into college football in a pretty good way, told me last week.
I mean he got there in 58 and just looking on wiki they won several national titles in the 35 years before he got there...but definitely some poor and mediocre seasons in that stretch as well. He certainly got them to a DOMINANT level almost year in and year out though so I agree with you there.
They might want to wait a year before trying for a new coach...top candidates have been picked over pretty good this year!!!
