I think caucasians have to go with the 1 or 2 buzz. If you shave it all the head will be like a new pair of white sneakers and you'll appear to be a chemo patient. If you're black, arab, or hispanic you can take your pick and be fine.
That's pretty much what I'm dealing with. Not yet to Stoops-level bald, but headed that way.
Where are you balding? If you are losing hair in the front middle, keep it short and tight. Longer haircuts will show off the thinning middle by contrasting it with the full side/back hair.
Go for the "1 or 2" unless it's really getting thin up top. A smidge longer in front so you have something to work with. You can do more with that haircut: flip-up, side-part, spiky, messy, etc.
And one of the most important tips I've learned, that NO ONE seems to follow: If you apply product, always apply from the back of head where hair is the thickest and work up to the front. People put way to much on the front part of the head, where it isn't needed, and weighs the hair down ruining whatever style you are going for.

If that doesn't work, grab the trimmers, and run a 1 to 1.5 all over. It's a VERY short buzz cut. You can do it yourself, takes 5 minutes once or twice a week, and just have someone trim the neck where you can't see once every 2 weeks. Very easy to maintain and always looks solid.
I do a #3 all over, take off the guard and do the neck with a mirror. Tricky. The main thing is to make it look like you at least attempted to do something.
I remember the meat curtains pic you used to have up. I've been a mess ever since.
I don't think I could do facial hair anyway. Too much of a baby face. Maybe in a few years.
Had a vice-principal where I worked once that kept his hair short, but there was an island, a tuft if you will, of hair right above his forehead. The back was fine, but there was a huge space between the back and the front.

Funky. Just shave your head man. Either that or go get hair plugs. Prolly cost a lot though
Benefits of bald are virtually no maintenance , wake up ready to go , one towel wipe after shower , no sweaty hair to deal with , laugh at windy days , save on combs etc..
Negatives - toboggans are a necessity , impacts hurt more , sunburn becomes real and you will need caps occasionally , more sweat in the eyes when active .

Don't worry that your hair is falling out. It will grow back, just not on your head. It'll grow out your nose and ears.

Probably safer to try a #3 or something first. That would tell you if your head is smooth & also let you take a look at that do in the meantime.
Trim it down and grow a beard that is trimmed to the same level, like Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. Prolly need to get the aids and lose a bunch of weight too.
If you are reasonably slim, a buzz cut or shaved head might work. But if you are fat and going bald, you're screwed. Nothings going to help. Ball cap time.
Willy's photobucket is a treasure trove. His high school yearbook pic showed a lot of promise with the trifecta of braces, combover, and ears askew.
Ed Harris in "The Firm" is a prime example of when it's better to go with remnants in some fashion than walk around like a walking/talking penis.
