What's up with Greer?

Maybe Collins wants another scholarship to give and he is trying to make it clear to Greer that he has no future playing time at NU in order to nudge him towards the transfer decision.

That speculation may be correct. If it is, I and some others would be disappointed. That approach of "nudging off" recruits may be widely used by others but it ill-befits Northwestern. Unless Collins and staff specifically recruited Greer on the understanding that he was merely a fill-in until someone better was available, the assumption is of a 4-year commitment from both parties.

When my first wife and I married, we did so -- not entirely facetiously -- not for a lifetime but on a year-to-year basis. We told each other it was not necessarily a long-term contract. Year-to-year, with the option of annual renewal with both parties' consent.

That was 56 years ago tomorrow. So far, my first wife is the only one. Although she hasn't yet conducted my annual review, I have hopes that our marriage will continue. Maybe I'm just projecting my own situation onto young Mr. Greer, but I hope he is allowed to stay the course.

Exactly. Just because someone is a role player doesn’t mean they’re being pushed out.
He better not be pushed out. He may not have been John Stockton his first year, but he joined on when we really needed a guard. Gave up a year of prep school preparation to join on. Running off is not the right thing to do.

Buie pushed him back on the depth chart. Only so many min to go around. Gaines injury might give him some min. Greer needs a lot of improvement before he’s ready to push for serious min. I don’t think he’s being pushed out... he just hasn’t showed enough to warrant playing time.

Every team in major college basketball has guys on the bench who get limited minutes. No one runs a 12-man rotation. Most teams have 7-9 contributors. It doesn't mean he's in the doghouse. It doesn't mean he's being pushed out. It just means that he's been beaten out for playing time. That's life in the Big Ten. Work hard on the court and in the classroom. Maybe you earn more playing time, and maybe you don't, but either way you come out with a topnotch degree and lifelong friends. I'm holding no pity parties for Greer.

Dang! I promised all five of my wives the same deal! A few of those marriages only lasted weeks!

I think we have several open scholarships so this wouldn’t seem to make sense. And I hope we would never do it as long as a kid is handling his academics and doing his best on the court.

Agree. The kid shouldn't be punished for a coaches recruiting mistake. Not saying Greer was a mistake, but if it turns out after 4 years he isn't B1G caliber that isn't his "fault", it is on the coaches who gave him a scholarship.

Greer is not a scoring threat and until his shooting improves, he is likely to see only spot duty. You've got to be able to hit the three pointer as a guard in big time college basketball today.

Wow, Willie, 56 years . . . . . that a lot of "Yes, dear"s on your part. And my guess is, you wouldn't trade a single one.

Greer shot 49% from 3 his last year in high school. So he seems to have the ability. I wonder if Collins is letting him redshirt since this year we have Spencer, the team is not a realistic shot for the tourney and Greer left high school a year early. If he does develop well he’d have an extra year, if he doesn’t CC is not expected to invite him back for a 5th season.

He can't redshirt this year since he has already played. The only redshirt option for 2019-20 would be a medical one, if he is diagnosed with a season-ending injury. Unlikely.

That is not true. Look at Sanjay Lumpkin or Aaron Falzon who I believe played in less than 20% of the games and had an injury which caused them to miss the rest of the year. I don’t know the exact rule but it is not “ a one and done type deal” if an injury is involved. Non-injury is a different story

love to hear that. Your insights about the players and team are probably the most valuable posts on this board for me.

He got playing time today. But e needs to be a consistent shooter in order to see the floor as part of the rotation.

And from what I’ve seen of him he does not have the lateral quickness to guard or get by B1G guards. Neither does Spencer.

And to do that he needs time on the floor. He was taking decent shots but could not get them to fall. He was definitely not alone. Seems like our three point shots were often short

I’m more hopeful that he could be a very solid backup big ten PG or secondary guard who gets comfortable with his 3 pt shot. Based on his shooting stroke and his 49% in high school 3 pt percentage I think he could contribute. But admittedly I haven’t seen him much this year and CC doesn’t seem to think he warrants development minutes over Spencer. Spencer is not part of the future but CC seems to value his intangibles and hope they rub off on the other guys.

Greer played the entire stretch against Hartford while Spencer sat on his Can.

I was very early in the arena for the DePaul game. Greer was shooting 3 pointers at a 80%+ clip. It’s easy to understand why he was a good 3 pt shooter in high school. But now:
1) he has to shoot quicker with faster and taller defenders. Something 99% of kids have to adapt to
2) he lacks confidence

I hope the main problem is #2 and he gets over it. Breakout game and whatnot. If it’s #1 he can’t get over, he will never be a B1G player
