What's up with the Defense?

Is it depth? Fatigue to blame for poor tackling in 2nd half? The second half performance was super disappointing!

I don't think it was fatigue this time. It started going downhill right after halftime. I think we made a defensive adjustment that we didn't need to do. I think we tried to outguess jimbo by dropping more people back and less blitzing and it opened up the run game for Cook. That and horrible tackling. That's not the first game it has been an issue.

I'm not discrediting the Noles by whining about our defense. The 1-2-3 punch of Cook-Golson-Whitfield were more than our guys could handle for four quarters.

Jimbo's done a super job with Golson this year. Hard to believe it's the same guy who couldn't play for Brian Kelly any longer. And Golson was under a lot of heat all afternoon.

Great job, Noles. If you guys play like you did the 2nd half today from here out, I see nothing but blue skies ahead. Go git 'er done...

we have enough talent on this team to make tackles. last year it was a problem too with all our talent. very disappointing to watch that happen. might need a tackling coach.

The telltale indicator when you're overmatched on talent is wearing down in the 2nd half. That's pretty much the team we were playing (FSU) and how the game played out.

And that guy we were missing a lotta tackes on is probably a Top 5 draft pick and maybe a Heisman Trophy candidate if the Noles keep winning.

Let's give the other team a little credit, esp. one of that quality...

I agree. A lot more 5 and 4 stars on the "Noles then we have.

Devante Fields gives up on most plays. Go back and watch our defensive plays from game #1 through today's game. You will not like what you see. He is either horribly out of shape or not what he once was... or plain ol' lazy. Pick what you want, but he shouldn't be starting for sure.

Refreshing...thanks. Kermit is a real wild card, and thankfully got healthy and started studying the playbook after last season. Many were ready to write him off heading into the season but his improvement is one of the reasons why I'm optimistic against Clemson. From what I have seen of Clemson this year, they don't have a lot of strength on the edges other than Alexander, but he'll hardly ever be matched up on Kermit. Golson's comfort level in the offense has occurred about as naturally as we can hope, and his absurd TD to TO ratio at this point is a real difference from last year. As dynamic as Jameis was, he put our defense in too many poor situations. Forcing teams to march 70 and 80 yards on us has been successful so far, but you guys definitely have something with Jackson and his ability to extend plays while keeping his eyes down field. I do not look forward to defending him for the rest of his career.

I saw that play as well. Fields was out of position at the line of scrimmage and got faked out and then just quit after the runner went by him. (and then everyone in our defensive backfield missed the tackle).

Florida State is good. They have real speed guys if you fall asleep for a play it is six. That happened three times yesterday.

When a team has that much speed you have to tackle in space and Louisville continues to struggle with their tackling. The Cook TD run was a classical example of a player giving up on the play (fields) and poor tackling from 3 players that quite frankly gave poor effort and technique. Poor effort against great effort isn't a going to work out for you. The other plays their guy was better than our guy.

The other thing is the offense is a year away from being good.

guys, our speed at the skill positions make a lot of defenders look bad and cook has the ability to just embarrass you. our depth has been the secret to our success forever. lots of teams can hang with us when it's 1's vs 1's, but our depth added to our overall speed makes us a tough out. we are also blessed with great coaching. I thought your d tackled about as good as anybody else we have played and your qb is going to be a handfull. keep recruiting to build depth and you will get there. your 1's seemed to hang with us from what I saw until they wore out and our depth took over (and speed).

I have my own opinions as to why the game changed and got out of hand and I don't necessarily lay it on the defense. Nothing was wrong with the defense up till halftime. Because our offense got so conservative before halftime put more pressure on grantham and the D to duplicate the 2nd half.

Whether the QB is Jackson or whoever, our offense needs to have sustained drives to allow our defense to rest and adjust. Jackson adds that boom effect, his drives are usually based on quick, big plays. However you can't rely on that to happen every possession. For whatever reason we have no running game. Radcliffe just doesn't have the explosiveness. Ok bonnafon does but we didn't run enough plays. What happen to smith, our big back. Nothing. Scott ran a big play before half and then only one more chance? Who's our TE? Crum has disappeared after great promise and now it's Hikutini, although we tried to run a big play for standberry last week and he dropped an wide open pass.

Who is our kickoff returner Lamb or Samuel? Lamb is not doing anything and Samuel has already taken one to the house, although Samuel made a stupid play yesterday on STs.
What happen to Peete yesterday? 2nd coming of Parker? Can Quick stay on his feet without falling down? I know there are a lot of freshman but stop relying on what you see each week in practice because it is practice and settle on the guys who have done it in a game and stick with it!

another thing to keep in mind is that Whitfield was the fastest player in the country when he signed 3 years ago and he claims he is faster now. Cook is just a monster who makes a lot of defenders look foolish. you guys have talent but it is young and inexperienced. keep recruiting for depth and give these kids time to grow up and you will have a hell of a team.

Dammit JW, if you want to keep posting here, you can't keep coming here and talking all positive about our players and coaches! LoL! Obviously joking; you are more than welcome here, just looks funny for a rival fan to argue we aren't as bad as some of our fans seem to think we are. Keep up the positive thoughts.

yeah, i'm an old fart who remembers Louisville from the old metro days and your damn doctors of dunk. we desperately need another consistently good football program in the acc. you guys could and should fit that bill so I have high hopes for you. and I really was impressed with Jackson's play and not looking forward to seeing an experenced version of him. about the only thing I have figured out in all my years of being a fan is a player/team is never as good or as bad as we fans think they are. another thing I now reluctantly admit is the coaches usually have a better idea who should be playing than I do.

We definitely need more posts from fans of the opposing team after each game. Our own fans tend to eat themselves...
