It's not as good as it used to be. And i certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get there. But in the spirit of the thread topic...if you happen to find yourself in Shelbyville…and you are hungry…and you aren't in the mood for Mexican food…then Claudia Sanders is an excellent choice.

My new favorite in Louisville is Monnik Beer Company in Germantown. Excellent beers all around, and the chef there used to be the chef at The Blind Pig, so the menu is solid.

Appetizers like curry fries, War Fries, curry beans on toast, and an awesome beer cheese served with spent grain toast. The Donder Fries appetizer may as well be a controlled substance - a plate of crispy fries topped with a sweet/sour Flemish beef stew, onions, and creme fraische. Unreal good.

Several entrees as well, but we never made it past the beers and fries and cheese. Did see someone near us having the Beer Burger - burger patty topped with beer cheese and a beer battered onion ring - and if it tasted anything like it looked, it had to be good.

As far as beers go, their IPA is a contender for the best in Louisville, but everything there is very well done. I normally don't drink much in the way of Saisons, but the Eagle Claw and Najaar saisons there are definite exceptions. The old ale they had on tap the last time we went was excellent, the milk stout was similarly good, etc. etc. Have not had a bad beer there yet.

I had Le Moo last week in Louisville. It was really solid. Comparable to the top steakhouses in the area. Maybe not better than Rubys etc, but we had a great meal.

We went to Catch 23, across from the Seelbach, this week. It was pretty good. Great seafood menu and pretty decent bourbon and beer selection as well.

Something similar, yes. Been back a few times since that review, and nothing has changed - good service, great food, great beer - and we still haven't had an entree other than the one special of the day the first day we went (which was too weird for the main menu). The only "issue" I have with the place is that they are new and small, so they don't have the capacity to brew large batches (yet, would be my guess). The beer list is extremely random as things run out and are replaced,.so if you really like something there, there is a good chance it won't be there the next time you go in.

Simpsonville - Brenda's (hole in the wall joint with horrible service and an actual bullet hole in the front door…but good food) JT's (for their stromboli), whatever the authentic mexican joint is called on Shelbyville Rd. where they look funny at all gringos who dine there but haven't killed anyone...yet

Frankfort - Rick's White Light Diner, Cliffside's, Gibby's, Azelia's, Saylor's (RIP)

Shelbyville - Claudia Sanders

Owensboro - Bill's

Hoptown - Harper House

LBL Area - Patti's (2" pork chop and the pies)

NKY - The Boathouse (yeah, i know it's across the ditch…so what? I like their ribs)

The following are decent places that we like in Lex. This does not imply that they are stellar compared to other cities but good choices in Lex.

BBQ - most BBQ in Lex is subpar but places like City BBQ and Proud Mary's can kill a craving.

Burger - Five Guys, Harry's, Smashburger, Sawyers, Hopcat.

Pizza - Joe Bolognas, Mellow Mushroom, Pazzos

Indian - Tandoor

Med - Sahara, Mr Kabob

Sushi - School, Aqua

Mexican - Mi picante hacienda for traditional, Coba Cocina for non-traditional.....it's gotten much better since Johnathan took over, Chuys

Finer dining - Merrick Inn, Azur, Sal's

Steak - Texas Roadhouse, Malones, Longhorn, Chop House

Other - Local Taco, Cheddars, Bonefish Grill, Wild Eggs/First Watch, Alfalfas

eiderdown being best foods in germantowns wolf also liking gasthaus

Seconded. Eiderdown is great. I've also enjoyed Shiraz. Particularly their roasted corn. In season, only. Mojito Tapas waaay out Brownsboro Road. There's a great place across the river in New Albany that the kids took us to. A brew pub. They also took us to a fabulous Vietnamese place in the South End several years ago. Don't know if it's still open. We had our daughter's rehearsal dinner at a family place in the Highlands that closed suddenly over (iirc) tip pooling or something.

For fancier grub: Proof. Mayan Cafe. Toast on Market. The old Bristol at the Art Center. Don't know if the one out Bardstown Rd is ok.

In memory only. Myra's Cafe. [RIP] Hasenour's [RIP]. There used to be a restaurant at Bowman Field whose name escapes me now.[RIP] Waaay back down memory lane there was a lunch counter at one of the drug stores in St. Matthews. After my grandpa died, my grandma would dragoon me to escort her to lunch and a movie at the old Vogue. One of the characteristic moments of my life: watching Separate Tables with Grandma while my brother and sisters got to go swimming at Crescent Hill pool.

When hungry in Shelbyville, drive to Louisville. TS.

-Blue Door isn't marginal, god love those guys. That's good ****. Need to get some beer though.

-Used to love Windy Corner but I feel like it's fallen off bit. Maybe she's stretched too thin. Still my favorite place to get away for lunch alone and enjoy the view. PoBoy + Ale 8 works just fine.

-Best in Lex is probably Tony's, Winchell's, Smithtown then some ranking of the Dudley spinoffs -> Dudleys, Nick Ryan, Sage Rabbit, Sabio, 735, Distilled, Azur.

-Anyone had Pasta Garage? Optimistic about that place.

It's a good thread. I just remembered Serafini's in Frankfort. Very nice place. Went there for lunch last fall and had the best Hot Brown. Not just the usual glop.
