Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin and maybe U2, Springsteen, Elvis, Dylan, GnR, Who, KISS? You did say 'most famous' and not best. 4th most famous is difficult. 1st three seem pretty obvious to me.

I'm with you on the 4th band after the Beatles, Beach Boys & the Stones. I had a hard time deciding between the Bee Gees & KISS for the 4th spot. But I went with the Bee Gees.

GUNS N' ROSES

I'm an 80's child so this is the music I grew up with. I would imagine everyone's age will influence their choices.

If you read OP’s requirement for your list, age should not have any influence. Your knowledge of Rock history will.

If you're just going by total sales (albums plus singles), then per Wikipedia's "claimed sales":

The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Queen

I'll disagree with you on that point, age is probably the biggest influencer because listening to and growing up with a band like G N' R is different than discovering them on Spotify.

OK, but his instruction for the list was….

Not your 4 favorite bands. But in your opinion the 4 biggest name most famous Rock bands in history.

I would have to say that if The Beatles and Stones aren’t on your list, then you don’t fully grasp the instruction.

1. Stones (Longevity, Volume of hits, music associated with some of Hollywood's best films/soundtracks)
2. Beatles (more pop than rock n roll to me but the original super band)
3. Led Zeppelin (one of the pioneers of hard rock)
4. U2

The Beatles and Stones are not in my history. Didn't grow up with them and only occasionally listened to them on the radio.

You and I totally read the title differently. The title says YOUR Mount Rushmore of the most famous rock bands in history. Emphasis on the word YOUR. Meaning of the most famous bands in rock history what is your personal 4 best.
Not your 4 favorite bands. But in your opinion the 4 biggest name most famous Rock bands in history.

Mine would be. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones & The Bee Gees.

AC/DC (original group), Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Pearl Jam and bury me right under it and I’ll smile thru eternity.

You might have missed the " in your opinion" part.

If we are omitting the opinion part we might as well just look up top 25 hits or album sales and call it a day.

I grew up in the 80s and you couldn't go anywhere without hearing ACDC or GnR. Pink Floyd and Aerosmith were also household names. Those other bands that op listed had little to no play. If you asked my parents, I'm sure Elvis would make this list. The age you grew up in certainly changes your perspective.

But the “in your opinion” part was very specifically about the “biggest name, most famous rock bands in history”. And the thread title very specifically asks us for the Mount Rushmore of most famous rock bands ever. Further, the OP tells us very specifically, “not your 4 favorite bands”.

I’m sure that plenty of people enjoyed GnR and have them as a personal favorite band. But if anyone has an opinion that GnR was ever bigger or more famous than The Beatles (or belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Rock bands), that opinion would be wrong.

So in your opinion, other people's opinions are wrong. That's just my opinion of your opinion though. It could be that my opinion has effected my opinion on your opinion.

I think the top 3 are undisputed:

Beatles
Rolling Stones (still going)
Beach Boys (broke up but still performing seperatly)

the 4th one is a lot harder, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AD/DC, Queen, Grateful Dead many more, but I'll go with

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Plasmatics

The Vapors.

The Eagles.

The Butthole Surfers.

At least three of those bands have songs I can listen to.

Seriously for me the argument is number four and that's between Pink Floyd and the Who. Although both might displace the Beatles and join the Stones and Led Zeppelin. The Beatles were both a pop and a rock band.

1 - The Beatles
2 - The Rolling Stones
3 - Led Zeppelin

4 is a tough call, imo. Toss up between AC/DC, Queen, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top. I could go with any of them.

Ps - still laughing my *** off over The Bee Gees listed as a rock band. 😆😆😆
You say that you are laughing your *** off at the Bee Gees being listed as a rock band. Well little buddy you might want to contact the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame about this, considering the fact that the Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. You need to inform them, that the Bee Gees are not a rock band.
